With access to NFL Players Association data, Rotoworld can generate the most accurate free agent list on the internet. The players are ranked in order of how we see them being valued on the open market.

Keep in mind that franchise tags can deplete the top of the free-agent market. Baltimore’s Joe Flacco is an obvious franchise-tag candidate after a somewhat disappointing contract season. Jairus Byrd in Buffalo will receive strong franchise-tag consideration as well.

2013 free agency will commence on the afternoon of March 12.

2013 Free Agency

February 6, 2013 12:23 am

I love your enthusiasm Irish. For the record though, since my best friend is a Bengals fan I've been reading up on them, and there's no way they are letting Michael Johnson out of there. They have the most cap room in the league and intend on locking him and Geno Atkins up before they do anything else.

As for Jairus Byrd and William Moore, both great players, and I have my doubts those teams let them out of there, though I'll admit I don't know that for sure. It's just that the Bills D is weak enough. I can't see them letting a great piece get away when they're struggling already. And the safeties played a huge role in ATL's run, so I think they'll want to lock that up.

All of that is moot as of now anyway...That was when I thought we would be staying in the 4-3 defense. The situation has changed drastically since that post..

I don't see many of those free agents being re-signed by this current regime.

The only real losses (if not resigned) would be Phil Dawson and Ben Watson.  There's a lot of depth that we will need to replace via the free agent market but no one above is unreplaceable -- with the exception of probably Dawson.

That may be the understatement of the New Year.  80% of those guys listed didn't play any significant time.  You can cut those guys and replace them with crash test dummies.  Enough of this depth argument for goodness sake.  I know you have to have insurance in case of injury and time relief, but this team needs big time playmakers not warm bodies.  The only guys I would make sure to tie up are Craig Robertson, Auston English, Ogbannaya, and maybe Ray Ventrone ( as I don't think he got a fair shake with Shurmur).  Can Ventron really be that bad that he couldn't be thrown in the mix with Sheldon Brown?

2013 Free Agency

February 16, 2013 8:18 am

Charles Woodson was released by the Packers yesterday. Maybe we should go after him.  Last year was a down year for him and he is 37, but if we get rid of Sheldon Brown we have room for an old guy that really gets the job done most years.  We have plenty of cap space.

If Anquan Boldin gets cut loose I hope we look at him.  I really wanted him in Cleveland three years ago when he was available.  The Ratbirds would not have won a second SuperBowl if it weren't for him.

I am hoping that the Ravens can't get a deal done with Flacco, and then try to cheap out by not using the exclusive tag.  How much fun would it be to tender him low enough that they would match it, but high enough that it would screw their cap even further!

It'll never happen, but it would be fun

The Ravens gave Flacco $20M+ per year. They have to restructure or release some players.  They don't have cap space.

That seems to be the price of success.

A "Franchise QB" is something that every team wants, but MAN they are expensive.  I know that they are the "most important player on the field", but it makes it very very hard when that one all important player costs 1/6th of your cap room on any given year.  Yes, i aknow that there are cap majicians out there that can make it work out, but it seems to invite disaster.

2013 Free Agency

March 6, 2013 3:52 pm

I haven't been reading posts for a while, but how do you all feel about going out and getting either a Dwight Freeney or Jonathan Abraham?  I think both may be on the quote-unquote downside of their careers, but they can very easily add serious attack on defense.  Would a three-year deal be in the works, do you think?  That would give our younger defensive front guys some nice and well-needed tuteledge.  Another scenario would be to get them and then therefore have our younger guys to barter with for either draft picks or players for another need.

As far as receivers I say we take a focused run at Wes Welker.  I have wanted that guy on the Browns since his second season with the Miami Dolphins.  That guy knows how to get open and catches everything thrown his way.  He is still relatively young and hungry.  Yes, he would be coming from a Super Bowl caliber team, but that is what we are shooting for, no? He already has his rings, so I don't think that would be a major factor in his denying us.   If we show a real sense of urgency to compete through free agency for other players, I think we could have a chance.  New England has been screwing around with this guy for going on three years now. He wants his money and he wants to get paid compensatory to his playing ability.  I don't think he will be looking to break the bank; he just doesn't strike me as that guy.

And if not Wes Welker Greg Jennings would be a nice fall-back.  Green Bay was stupid enough to cut him the other day.  Their cap problems and his new contract could pose an interesting proposition for Cleveland.  He could be had at a discount I believe because of his injury this past season.  I think both he and his agent understand that will be a reduction in negotiated money.  Can you fathom a Wes Welker or Greg Jennings with the receivers we have already?  Talk about instant credibility and national attention brought to our team. They are already saying we are poised to turn things around and make a run.  That would go a long way to taking that next leap.

Welker or Jennings, sure, I would be on board with that...

Freeney or Abraham, no, I would not...mainly because you are getting into that tier of over paid last contract player who is more of a coach than an important cog in making the defense elite.

Freeney has definitely shown he is in decrease mode
2009-13.5 sacks
2010-10 sack
2011-8.5 sack
2012-5 sack

Even if the slide stopped there, I want someone that is going to contribute more than 5 sacks...

Abraham would be my choice on a short term 2 year contract..this guy is 34 years old, but has still produced some sacks...I just don't think he will leave a contender, to get one final contract and stay 100% "involved" in being a top player...

2013 Free Agency

March 7, 2013 12:24 pm

Sorry to blow your bubble, but I dont and Welker, Freeney, Jennings, etc happening as long as Banner's in the driver seat. He doesnt care for older players. Someone once wrote that Banner's philosphy is that getting rid of a player a year or two early is better than holding onto a player a year or two late. Thus, Sheldon Brown, Dawkins, Trotter, etc are left walking or traded. So too, will Dawson, Cribbs, Watson, Smith, Fujita, etc. Here's who I think are on their short list or is rumoured to be.

QB Matt Moore (Personal Preference: I'd trade for Mallet with a 2013 and a 2014 3rd with McCoy thrown into the deal)

RB None known (Personal Preference: sign UFA RB Jackie Battle - played for Turner in SD and is a strong change of pace back to go with Richardson/Hardesty)

TE None known - the Browns will probably sign at least one maybe two but are playing their cards close to the vest (Personal Preference: Jared Cook- he's a nightmare match up. alternate is Fred Davis if healthy - not to mention he's a hometowner)

WR Wallace is most frequently mentioned and Jennings fits the Banner MO of staying away from aging players. Hartline or David Nelson on the next tier in options (Personal Preference: I wonder whether we can swing a trade with the Chargers for Donario Alexander. He blossomed under Turner after they got him last season. He's an RFA so I wonder what they tendered him at. Maybe they would trade first round position and we add DT John Hughes since they need DLs and we're deep at DT?)

OL None known - (Personal Preference: sign OG Louis Vasques (frated by/played for Turner), sign him now!)

K - None known - (Personal Preference: re-sign Dawson)

DT None known (Personal Preference: None needed)

DE None known (Personal Preference: Not much available IMO the best is Desmond Bryant who would need to transition to 3-4 or perhaps Ricky Jean-Francois)

LB Raven UFA Paul Kruger or Dannelle Ellerbe have been mentioned along with Quentin Groves to seemed to reclaim his career under Horton in Arizona. Avril has also been mentioned frequently and played for the Browns new D-line coach in Detroit (Personal Preference: Avril is a one dimensional plaery and is a liability against the run, still a great situational pass rusher but will cost over $10M per year. Kruger may be only be excelling because of the system and the players around him. Yet no one can knock his sack production this year and is solid against the run. IMO the gem would be Ellerbe.  Another OLB I would consider and not mentioned is Connor Barwin. Would anyone be adverse to adding Ellerbe and Barwin?)

CB None mentioned (Personal Preference: Definitely a need here. Leodis McKelvin or Greg Toler (player under Horton) would be options. None are shutdown corners but could be on par with Sheldon Brown.

Safety - None mentioned (Personal Preserence: Glover Quin. Glover Quin, Glover Quin)

QB Matt Moore (Personal Preference: I'd trade for Mallet with a 2013 and a 2014 3rd with McCoy thrown into the deal)
So you would trade TWO 3rd round picks for a 3rd round player that has 1-4 compl...0TD and 1INT(in 4 attempts)?

TE None known - the Browns will probably MUST sign at least one maybe two
We only have two TEs and a FB hybrid under contract right now, with neither TE a viable starter entering this offseason.

I would be shocked if they don't get a TE in free agency, and possibly draft another in the middle rounds in April.

(Personal Preference: Jared Cook- he's a nightmare match up. alternate is Fred Davis if healthy - not to mention he's a hometowner)
I am 100% in agreement with the choice of Cook. i think he has the most potential to do what Turner/Chud ask of their TE's...

Davis stated in an interview on Tuesday that he is hoping to stay in Washington, for what it's worth. He DID say however, if they didn't get something done, he would enjoy playing in Cleveland.

I too believe this is the tier of WR they will be looking at...

You blew my mind on the Alexander statement...I was experimenting with the same thing the other day. I gave up on the idea when it was reported they would be giving him the first round tender...I don't see any way they give up #6 overall to sign him...however, that trade proposal would be very interesting. Hughes was the same player I targeted in a trade with them...I just didn't take it far enough to consider trading spots with the player to get it done. It would all depend on the new regime in San Diego and how high they are on the kid. I think he would be the perfect type of addition for this team though.

OL None known - (Personal Preference: sign OG Louis Vasques (frated by/played for Turner), sign him now!)

K - None known - (Personal Preference: re-sign Dawson)
I would be down with both...As far as kickers go, there are very few that fall into a better age category than Dawson anyway, and at his age, he is still head and shoulders above them.

Barwin was my first choice, until the same day I endorsed him he went on National Radio(SiriusNFL) and said he wouldn't want to play for the Browns... I immediately eliminated him.

Would love to see Ellerbe! I think him beside Jackson would help transition whomever we end up with on the outside.

I agree Avril would be over priced for what he offers. My hope would be to get an all around OLB that doesn't hurt the team in certain situations. With the fast paced offensive movement, it is getting more difficult to sub these specialists out...If I am taking a chance on someone like this, I would rather do it in the draft instead of paying him $10M per year.

CB, either way it is going to be a second tier guy, but should still be an upgrade to Skrine..I would prefer Rodgers-Cromartie, but he thinks a little more of himself and may try to get too much money, which I am not comfortable with.

Safety, I would be all over Dashon Goldson...otherwise, Quin would be a great consolation. I would prefer one of these two, as the rest of the above average crop are all injury hazards.
