NFL Off-Season Thread - General

Here is what Rotoworld had to say:

The National Football Post's Dan Pompei has been told by league sources that impending free agent Greg Jennings isn't expected to be a hot commodity on the open market. The reasoning? "First, they believe Jennings won't produce as much without Aaron Rodgers throwing to him, and without Mike McCarthy drawing up plays for him. And secondly, he is 29 years old," writes Pompei. Jennings shouldn't approach the five years and $55 million that Vincent Jackson received last offseason, but he shouldn't struggle to find some team to pay top dollar after his strong finish to the 2012 season. Perhaps teams will undervalue Jennings and he'll be a steal in free agency.

The Miami Herald's "sense" is that the Dolphins will pursue free agent Mike Wallace, with free agent Greg Jennings "also in the mix."Jennings' relationship with coach Joe Philbin has made him a frequent target of Dolphins rumors, but it's Wallace who's one of the league's fastest players and entering his prime. However, Wallace should command a much larger commitment, both in years and dollars. That might not be a problem for Miami, as a "close associate" of owner Stephen Ross tells the Herald he's prepared to "spend a lot of money." Feb 3 - 4:29 PM

Man.
That first article made me happy.......Then that second one brought me down.

I've never been a big Wallace fan.  So count me among those that don't see the need to spend substantially more for him when there are quality alternatives that should go for less.
I'd rather have Jennings and a few million to address another position than Wallace.
It also would seem 11-12m on Wallace would make it tougher to sign Hartline which would be another negative for me.

I heard Peter King today and he said just about the same thing as that first article.
He thought the theme of FA is going to be players disappointed.
I guess the cap didn't go up this year?  I believe that was the reason for his theory, and he also used Jennings saying literally the same thing as Pompei.

DetroitLions.com mentions Brian Hartline as someone who could be a target of the team in free agency.

Hartline seems to be one of the few Dolphins free agents that the team has actually shown interest in re-signing, so he's not guaranteed to hit the market. But, he would be a nice addition on the outside opposite Calvin Johnson, and would be a massive upgrade on late-season starter Kris Durham. Nate Burleson, Ryan Broyles, and Mike Thomas are better suited for the slot, and Titus Young is likely on the outs. Hartline is said to be seeking $6 million annually.

Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland said he has high hopes for WR Rishard Matthews in 2013.

Matthews, a 2012 seventh-round pick out of Nevada, played in eight games as a rookie, starting the season finale. He caught just 11 passes for 151 yards, but our Week 17 game charter noted Matthews showed "route-running chops" and "deceptive vertical speed." He still shouldn't open next season as any higher than the No. 4 receiver.

Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland singled out Lamar Miller as the player he's expecting the most growth from in 2013.

The fog is starting to clear, and it's looking more and more likely that free agent Reggie Bush will not be re-signed. "Lamar really showed some great signs of really some explosive-play opportunity," Ireland said. "He kind of shoots out of the cannon when he hits the hole. He’s got very good hands. I thought he did a very good job in his pass protection, which keeps him on the field all three downs." Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald recently reported that Miami thinks Miller can be an upgrade on Bush as a system fit in Joe Philbin's zone-run scheme. Daniel Thomas, or another veteran, would likely be Miller's backup. Miller's fantasy stock is on the upswing.

Former Dolphins G/T Vernon Carey announced that he's coming out of retirement.

Carey, 32 in July, retired in August after the Dolphins failed to re-sign him. He then went on to accept a co-offensive line coach position at a Miami area high school. The Jets reportedly showed interest in Carey last offseason, but he'll likely struggle to find work this summer.

The Palm Beach Post also expects the Dolphins to try and sign SS Reshad Jones to a contract extension.

The Miami Herald thought the same thing earlier in the month. Jones turns 25 next month and is entering the final year of his rookie deal, which pays $1.323 million. He started all 16 games in 2012 and finished fourth on the team with 95 tackles. Jones is a solid building block after being a fifth-round pick in 2010.

MLive.com suggests the Lions as a possible landing spot for impending free agent Reggie Bush.

Bush would fit nicely as a pass-catching complement to bruiser Mikel Leshoure. It's an asset the Lions have been sorely missing ever since Jahvid Best went down in Week 6 of the 2011 season. The Bengals could also show interest as Marvin Lewis hasn't been shy to publicly announce his intention to add talent to their running back stable. He appears ready to give up on free agent Bernard Scott, who is coming off an ACL tear.

I guess the cap didn't go up this year?
It's my understanding it went up 300k which is minimal as the 51 current rostered players contracts will escalate beyond that. The thing that is different this year, and helps Miami somewhat is teams can choose to "Roll over" any amount they were under the cap in 2011. This adds something like 4-5 million onto Miami's cap space in 2013. Most sources claiming Miami has over 40 million in available cap space have factored this money into the figure.

That's disheartening.
iI really don't want Hartline to leave.  I hope the Front Office realizes they don't just need to sign a better WR, but they need to sign a better WR to ADD to what is already here.  5m or so doesn;t seem like a lot for his talent, and knowing you'd now have 3 legitimate options at worst if they choose to sign a bigger name guy.

I could totally see why the Lions would want him though.
I'd imagine he'd put up nice numbers in their throw a million times offense, and he'd benefit from all the attention Johnson gets.
He'd also be a great complement to Johnson - A solid Wr who can do a bit of everything, a guy that's dependable, and to this point a guy that doesn't demonstrate any diva-like qualities which would allow him to be a clear #2 to Johnson's #1 with a bullet.

I don't see Wallace being worth the contract either. I'd rather have Bowe or Jennings, and a rookie to pair with Hartline, and Bess.

I see we're talking about the 'one trick pony again'.  Bill Polian in an ESPN article wrote that Wallace can run proper routes and obviously take it deep.  But he still has average hands and is clearly inconsistant.  He still feels that he will be the most sought after WR FA.  Ten to eleven million just isn't realistic. Somebody will pay in the 8 to nine range but I can't hope it's us.  Jennings at 6 to 7 is possible but there isn't a quarantee that he'll remain healthy.  Or as Polian says "without Rogers throwing his way, how effective will he really be"?

It just goes to prove how difficult getting off season WR help will be.  The draft has some good receivers but at 12 some might see anyone of them as a reach.  It's going to be a crap shoot as to our choices in FA and the draft regarding any WR's.  Ireland will either earn his money or be reaching for the door.  It's going to be tough!

I'm hoping that there is a WR that they like with our first second rounder.  As far as FAs are concerned I'm hoping for a reasonably priced Jennings (20 mil over three years max).

Jennings makes the most logical sense when you consider that receivers switching teams is a risk. They've got to learn a new system, befriend the QB, and the receivers coach. Not to mention the OC, and Head coach. There's a lot that goes into it, and their success or failure is not always in their hands. Then they're a year older, and all the things that go with that. Stricter diet, more work keeping fit, etc.

You can usually get them to hit the ground running faster then a rookie, but there is still a transition.

Jennings knows this offense, and coach. That's a huge benefit, and probably a true draw for him if he is smart. The real concern, as mentioned is the recent injury history.

I still believe Dwayne Bowe is the most complete receiver, but word is he might be resigned now that Reid is there.

Here is the plain-English explanation to why Jake Long still costs $1.6 mil against the Dolphins camp next year:

Before the 2008 Draft, the Dolphins and Jake Long negotiated a non-traditional contract for a No. 1 overall pick.

While technically it was a 6-year contrat, as all high-first rounders were at the time, the sixth year was set up to void if Jake fulfilled easy-to-reach playing time markers (something in the neighborhood of 35% of offensive snaps in any season). That sixth year officially voided in the last week, and Jake is set to be a free agent on March 12.

With this structure, the Dolphins were able to sign Jake Long to a below-market deal for a No. 1 overall pick, and lessened their commitment to him (from six years to five). Jake Long, in exchange, got the glory of being the No. 1 overall pick, and the ability to reach a big free agent payday a year ahead of schedule (in five years instead of six).

The Dolphins also gave Jake Long a salary advance of $8 million before the 2009 season. He received every dollar up front, but for salary cap purposes, the Dolphins were able to prorate that $8 million across the final five years of his contract (including 2013, which was still a valid year at the time). Jake Long's cash advance added another $1.6 million to his cap number from 2009-2013 (8.0/5=1.6). So even though Jake Long is a free agent for 2013, he still has one last $1.6 million proration that will be the books for next season.

I think you are correct in your guess. Id love to see Jennings sign for $4-5m a year, with bonuses for his health, get a nice WR rookie. I believe the Chiefs will pick up Alex Smith for a 2nd rounder and a 4rd rounder. KC becomes a far more complete team with him and Bowe will want to stay.

Jennings/Bowe.. let Hartline go.. get a rookie...? Bowe for 7m a year... Jennings for 4m.. lol we can get both of them for what Wallace wants in a year.. plus sign a Rookie... Food for thought.. doubtful but that would be cool.

Giants released RB Ahmad Bradshaw.

Bradshaw had been bandied about as a candidate for release in the Giants media, but it's still a surprising decision. However, it creates $2.75 million in cap space, and clears the way for 2012 first-round pick David Wilson to take over as starter. Speaking at his season-ending presser, GM Jerry Reese made it clear he remained high on Wilson despite his uneven rookie season. Bradshaw is still only 27 (in March), and has averaged a robust 4.6 yards on 921 career carries, but chronic foot issues bode poorly for his future. He's currently recovering from right foot surgery that's expected to sideline him through mid-April. Regardless, Bradshaw should have little trouble finding work as a complementary back on the open market.. there we go we need him he still young and still good..

Greg Cossell agreed, also agrees that Wallace is not much more then a vertical threat. Jennings is not far off from Bowe, but he is not as big, according to him.

The Cleveland Browns can replace Brandon Weeden with Alex Smith and get younger at the QB position.
Wrap your head around that.
Tongue out lol

Evidence #747,651 as to why the NFL Draft is the most important part of the process.
Anyone see the rumored players that are likely to be salary cut casualties?
It's like a who's who of the same guys we advocated for signing, trading for, or wishing we have obtained over the last two seasons.
A year or two later these guys are bad contracts and dead weight.  It's crazy.

I believe slowly but surely the rookie wage scale is forcing down salaries. Most teams don't seem willing to pay top dollar like they once were. The result is most expensive free agents are being cut loose. It will be interesting to see if they get what they are expecting. If you are not a Peyton Manning, or Adrian Peterson you are probably going to find disappointment. I have no concrete proof of this, but that is my perception. We'll know for sure after free agency.

The Jets have yet to buy into the new era, but they'll be forced to if they expect to compete. Their cap figures are insane.
