WHISENHUNT NEW CHARGERS OC!!!

January 17, 2013 3:07 pm

This is a coup! Well, IMO it is. I'm very excited with this hire and am now looking forward to our staff reassmbling this team into a relevant one in a relatively short time. This may be a one year deal with Whiz's HC experience, but for one year we'll have a very solid staff if our hires continue to be this solid.

I will say right now, as a Charger fan, its time to get excited again. Great hires, now lets hope that AJ's last few defensive guys become stars and that the poor, poor signings of Meachem, Gaither and Royal do not cripple this team any further.

Good hire, but I agree that he will be one and done. Especially if the offense turns around. That will only happen with at least two solid additions to the 0-line.

WHISENHUNT NEW CHARGERS OC!!!

I don't know about one and done 26.  SD is a pretty attractive place to coach and to live.  If he has success, he may actually be more inclined to stay.  It has been a long time since he was a part of a winning team (one playoff appearance in AZ).  If this thing gets turned around quickly, and the Chargers are contending with Peyton and the Broncos for the AFC West title (or at least get a WC berth) next season, then I think he actually sticks around.  Sure, he will be a HC for someone again, but I really don't think the guy leaves after one campaign in SD.

WHISENHUNT NEW CHARGERS OC!!!

Great hire.  What impresses me most is that McCoy was able to attract Whiz as OC and Frank Reicht as quarterbacks coach.  The NFL is all about bringing in a stable of good coaches and letting the head coach do his job or orchestrating all of them.  As far as the one and done thoughts about Whisenhunt if the Chargers rebound in a big way; what a good problem.

With the changes made at general manager, head coach, offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, there will be an entirely new look to this team and heaven knows we need it.  The next big step is hiring a really good offensive line coach.  Whatever it takes to land the best available, it would be a very good investment.

This will be an exciting off-season as well look to retool the offense.  Boils down to getting two good tackles and one interior lineman, one tight end, one running back and one receiver.  Realistically we can get two linemen, a running back and tight-end in the draft (especially since offensive line and running backs often start and contribute their first year) and one veteran lineman and receiver through free agency.    Add in one more guy at free saftey and we have one hell of a team.

I knew Whiz would be scooped up rather quickly - but I thought it would be HC.  To be honest, I would not have been terribly disappointed if we would have hired him as such (though I am happier with McCoy).

Thanks AZ!  That's a steal for us at the oc spot.

I'm pleased with all 3 management moves so far. I think a strong foundation has been formed. Now they will address the position issues and move forward. If what has happened so far in the off season is any indication, then expext to see some new names on the roster that have established themselves in the NFL or high in the college rankings. Lets Go Bolts!

WHISENHUNT NEW CHARGERS OC!!!

The Chargers have added 5 more assistants...

Chargers announce five more assistant coaches

The Chargers added another Cardinals refugee to Mike McCoy’s first coaching staff.

Chad Grimm will join offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt, quarterbacks coach Frank Reich and special teams coach Kevin Spencer on the San Diego staff after coaching in Arizona last season. Grimm, who is the son of Hall of Famer and former Cardinals assistant Russ Grimm, will be the defensive quality control coach for the Chargers in 2013.

Andrew Dees was named the team’s assistant offensive line coach, Craig Aukerman will assist with Spencer’s special teams units and Nick Sirianni will be the offensive quality control coach. Sirianni was the wide receivers coach in Kansas City in 2012, Dees assisted Chargers offensive line coach Joe D’Alessandris in Buffalo and Aukerman coached in Jacksonville.

The team also announced that Byron Storer will remain with the team as an assistant linebackers coach. Storer helped with the special teams on Norv Turner’s final staff and served a similar role in Tampa for two years before coming to the Chargers.

So while I don't know much about the assistants, I have to say I am quite pleased with the offseason moves.  Dean surprised me by actually hiring a sought after guy.  While I believe Whisenhunt hasn't really had any success without Haley, I am willing to give him a shot.

You and me both, santaclara. Hoepfully it goes as well as we're all hoping.

While I believe Whisenhunt hasn't really had any success without Haley, I am willing to give him a shot.
Well, I guess you could also say this saying goes both ways. Haley hasn't shown anything since he left AZ. You know why? Simple. No Kurt Warner. He made Haley. Now he ends up on the Steelers and they're still not happy up there with his play calling (the players).

Whiz, BTW, was the OC of a SB champion, if I do recall. His lack of success was actually due to both the poor ownership there, along with a GM who wouldn't know talent if it came and knocked on his door. We actually interviewed him for the HC job, and I would have been okay if he'd been the guy. I think right now we got the best of both worlds out of the deal. Now, if him and McCoy do a bang up job with the offense this year, he might be a one and done guy. Take care.

Maybe. Maybe not. Maybe all they need is some different coaching or a different scheme, or a different strength and conditioning program to turn things around. We're going to have at least two of the three, and probably all three, so that actually remains to be seen. On that note, we do need a couple of players one way or the other.

Haley has done nothing since leaving AZ

Wrong.  Haley won the AFC West in 2010 with horrendous Matt Cassel as his QB

WHISENHUNT NEW CHARGERS OC!!!

I'll give him the one good year, santaclara. However, one good year does not a HC make. It is said known that his personality issues rubbed the wrong way on the Cheifs players, which led to his year two showing...along with some injuries that also didn't help. The bottom line is he didn't show any creativity or ability to adjust on the fly to lessen the impact of the injuries, and the players didn't respect him, so they basically tanked it. You also have to look at how well Crennell's defense played that year as well as being a major reason for their winning record, but since Haley was the HC, I'll give him the credit for that one year.

The reality with Haley is that he was a noname until Leinart's injury and Whisenhunt elevated Kurt Warner to the starting QB position. I still contend that it was more Warner than Haley that made that offense tick by making reads at the line and the audibles he called. In his current position on the Steelers, he argueably has more offensive talent than he's ever had, yet the Steelers were no offensive juggernaut. I do believe his hire was based on Steelers management looking at their defense's age and knowing it was about to need a complete overhaul, and that the offense would need to carry the team while this takes place. I don't think, in all honesty, Haley's job there has met their expectations, and I would venture to say if they don't pick it up this year, he could be looking for another job. Hopefully, he's learned to control his temper/ego. It's okay to be a disciplinarian, but it's not okay to be condenscending, and that's been his big problem.
