NFL looking into lack of minority hiring for head coaching jobs

By Josh Katzowitz | BloggerJanuary 18, 2013 3:01 pm ET <!-- Render Google +1 button --><!-- Render Stumble Upon button -->

As CBSSports.com's Mike Freeman pointed out Thursday night, none of the eight coaches hired this offseason was of color. In all, teams went 0-for-8 in hiring minorities (or as Freeman wrote, “0-fer-black”).

Though the Rooney Rule is in place and does lead to minority candidates legitimately interviewing for head coaching jobs, you also have to wonder how effective that mandate is. Well, the NFL has taken notice and plans to do something about it.

Here's [the statement] from Robert Gulliver, the NFL's executive vice president of human resources:

"While there has been full compliance with the interview requirements of the Rooney Rule and we wish the new head coaches and general managers much success, the hiring results this year have been unexpected and reflect a disappointing lack of diversity. The Rooney Rule has been a valuable tool in expanding diversity and inclusion in hiring practices, but there is more work to do, especially around increasing and strengthening the pipeline of diverse candidates for head coach and senior football executive positions. We have already started the process of developing a plan for additional steps that will better ensure more diversity and inclusion on a regular basis in our hiring results. We look forward to discussing these steps with our advisers to ensure that our employment, development and equal opportunity programs are both robust and successful."

Former Colts and Buccaneers coach Tony Dungy agrees. As he wrote in an email to PFT, it's been six years since an African-American head coach was hired from outside the organization that's hiring. That would be Pittsburgh's Mike Tomlin. Coaches like Indianapolis' Jim Caldwell, Oakland's Hue Jackson, Minnesota's Leslie Frazier and Tampa Bay's Raheem Morris all were hired from inside those organizations.

“While many people would say it doesn't matter and those six coaches were selected and got a chance, you still have to be concerned about the process for minority coaches,” Dungy wrote in the email. “I know Ron Rivera was hired by the Panthers, but you would have to think that somewhere in the last six hiring cycles a team would reach out to an African-American coach outside their building. Unfortunately, it appears right now that the best way for an African-American coach to get an opportunity is to be on a staff where the head coach gets fired or retires. I still don't think owners and GMs are doing a great job in the process of identifying minority candidates.”

This should be a fun thread. :-)

I hate how everything is about race when in reality, it isn't. It just gets turned into a race thing by racists of that minority class.

Ironic his last name is Freeman, but I did just see Django.

Dude needs to get a life. Nothing to do with race here.

Dare I say it that there might not be any as qualified as the coachs that were hired? It's annoying to listen to when it is only 8 jobs, sorry but maybe there weren't any more qualified then the people that got hired. This race card crap is getting more and more annoying.

Any black posters on this board? How do you feel about this issue? Is it an issue? Or is it just being blown out of proportion?

I just dont get it. Why doesn't society make a stink about african americans in hockey then too? What about white people from the US in basketball? It just is what it is. Live with it. these teams are not going to choose a bad white coach over a good black coach because of race.

Diversity for the sake of diversity is crap

Hire the best guy for the job. The Rooney rule is garbage. All it does is create a bunch of sham interviews in order to avoid getting fined and slammed in the press. There's nothing wrong with a team firing a coach, then going all out after one guy they know they absolutely want

Mel Tucker and Todd Bowles have to be really tired of the BS interviews just to avoid a fine

You made this thread.  Made a joke on Freeman's name.  Called out black people for their opinion because you apparently expect an uproar.  And then threw out what you perceive to be racial injustice in two others sports as a "well it's not a problem there so why is it one here" type of comment.

So I ask, do you really hate how everything gets turned into a race thing when you're spearheading it so far?

Hockey is not a sport readily available in the inner cities. Any kid can find a basketball and a hoop. But to play hockey you need to buy all kinds of expensive equipment and it's not as readily available to find a hockey rink to just waltz up and practice all day.

Hockey is not a cheap sport to play. It's a very heavy financial committment.

I'm just going to copy my response to the original article:

13% of the US is black.

In a 32-team league, that equates to 4 coaches.

There are 3 black coaches in the NFL, Tomlin for the Steelers, Lewis for the Bengals, and Leslie Frazier for the Vikings.

Was it 2009 when there were 6 or 7 black coaches? In that year, blacks were hugely OVER-represented.

Can't wait for a ftballgenius reply to this thread.

And why does it matter that Frazier, Morris, et al were hired from INSIDE the organization? All that means is that those teams had an okay program from which they could pick coaches?

The Rooney Rule exists to offer opportunity - if you can't even get an interview you don't get a chance.  But a team should not be put in a numbers position - there are not enough "minority" coaches therefore you have to have one.  How stupid is that?  So what can the NFL do?  Ask the Chiefs why they wanted a coach who went to how many Championship games with a QB who pukes under pressure?  Ask the Chargers why they wanted a coach who created an offense for two so different QBs in Tebow and Manning YET GOT to the playoffs with both?  Why the Bears gave up on Lovie after having too many years out of the playoffs (the Vikings making it instead surely was the killer blow) and went with a QB guru?

Its a no-brainer and the NFL should simply try to ensure there are ample overall coaching opportunities for minority coaches - be that d-line, RB, whatever and not just co-ordinator roles.  They have to earn their stripes as any coach - from the ground up.  Many will in years to come I am sure.  Its a pity many coaches (of any race) are not like Tony Dungy.  He was a class act and you cannot replicate that with "rules".

Giving them an interview doesn't guarantee them a chance either. If the candidates you're interested in happen to be white, then you shouldn't be forced to arbitrarily talk to random people you have no interest in hiring. You're wasting both parties' time.
