I don't know if you guys read or heard or if you care but the Cubs did just sign Scott Hairston, what do you guys think of the move?

Next move would be to move Soriano and I think that this signing has them out of the competition to sign Michael Bourne.

He is a good pick up. He has good power and him and Nate should actually put updecent numbers for right. I like the signing of him.

I applaud the move!  As I stated under "The Mighty Scott Hairston" thread, in addition to his position flexibility, we now have a home-run threat off the bench to pinch hit in the late innings.

Also, at 6M over 2 years, he would be an attractive chip to help close a deadline deal with a contender.

Next on the to do list could be a trade involving one of the following teams:

Rangers
Tigers
Orioles
gocubsgo - we were never going to sign Michael Bourn or any other free agent that would require draft pick compensation.

+1

As for Scott Hairston, I don't mind the signing. He's got his upside as a situation platoon player. He's the type of guy who won't make a team a winner, but he's the type of guy every winning team needs, if that makes sense.

This is a decent signing, nothing more or less.

One more thing, I really, REALLY hope there won't be a Spring Training firesale now, hope they'll wait and see what this current roster can do during regular season, and then, if we have no Playoffs chances by the time of July (and yeah, I know Playoffs are a pipedream), only then they should go out and try to trade guys like Soriano, Garza, etc.

Phil Rogers in todays Chi Trib has some interesting speculation. Cubs have an excess of RH OF prospects  with Sappelt,

McDonald,Lillibridge, and but now Hairston is LH,giving more balance.. This may make a trade involving   Soriano more likely .

Rogers points out that  Cubs still  have to place   Carlos Villanueva on 40-man roster, and they have  to make room for both Hairston

as well.

So he sees this  as  a  move to allow them to make a trade.

C Castillo, Navarro, Clevenger
1B Rizzo
3B Stewart
SS/2B Castro, Barney, Valbuena
OF Soriano, DeJesus, Schierholz, Hairston

SP Shark, Jackson, Garza, Baker, Woods, Feldman

RP Russell, Camp, Fujikawa, Marmol

Those are guys I expect something from (plus SP/RP Vizcaino, CF Jackson and 3B/OF Vitters, who will all start the season in minors and probably get a chance in majors somewhere during the season).

Add minors prospects 3B Vilanueva and OF Soler (that gives us 27 names overall) and that's about it, all others on current Cubs roster are basically career journeymen and trash.

Ok signing.

Looking over his past production he needs 300 AB's to be effective.  We can expect around  150-200 on a RH side of a platoon.

In the article they were talking about Sori getting days off also.

What I would do is run vs LH Sori, Sappelt and Hairston.  RH give a day off here and there to Sori with Hairston.

VS LH pitching:

Sappelt CF
Barney 2B
Rizzo 1B
Soriano LF
Castro SS
Hairston RF
Castillo C
Stewart 3B

They are going to need to clear a 40 man spot.  Guessing this is good-bye to Campy....nice run...pun.

I still think there may be a move in the works.  The Cubs hae 20 pitchers on their 40 man roster.  That seems like a lot to me, but I don't follow average 40 man roster bearkdowns.

The Cubs hae 20 pitchers on their 40 man roster.

That is before adding Carlos Villanueva & Scott Hairston.

The 4 possible roster cuts (barring trade) will be:

Chris Rusin
Brooks Raley
Tony Campana
Josh Vitters

The Rusin/Raley cut is difficult because they are 2 of the 4 LHP on the Cubs roster, but neither has the talent or stuff compared to Castillo, Cabrera, Dolis, McNutt or Rondon

Campana loses out to Sappelt, and Vitters may have fallen behind Christian Villanueva.

Villanueva hasn't played above A ball. He'll go to AA this year, Vitters will be at AAA. The organization may think more highly of Villanueva, but he's not as close to the majors as Vitters.

Logicly speaking:

They add a 4th OF on a 2 year.  They have Dejesus and Schniderholtz who hit LH pitching worse then RH pitching.

No brainer here platoon both.  They will need 2 RH bats in the OF for back up.  They have Jackson in AAA.

Campy out.

That is one.

2nd is tricky.

I would go with Lendy or Rusin.  Neither are a big loss.

I would put Villuenva and Feldman in to the pen.
Hold overs Camp and  Russell
SU Fujikawa
CL Marmol

1 more is rule V  Hector Rondon

Rest go to AAA for injury filler.  Cabrera should be reconverting back into a starter this year.

Honestly that pen looks to be the strongest point on the team next year...not bad.  Hope they can get some leads to hold.

Who is Scoot Hairston?
His parents nicknamed him that, when the household ran out of toilet paper, one dark and stormy night.
