Who to take at number 26

January 25, 2013 10:32 am

I'm currenlty working on my mock draft for my podcast blog. I'm honestly stuck with the Packers number 26 pick. I think the Packers need to spend this pick on the best defensive player on the board, minus the CB position. Or Running back or if there is a standout WR. Currently in my mock I'd have them taking one of these 5 players. Who would you take?

Jonathan Hankins DT-Ohio State-Have the Packers taking him simply to be the backup NT to Raji. Who else is a legit NT on this team besides Raji and Pickett? Pickett plays more DE now. I think adding another big body up front will help the Run D.

Shariff Floyd-DE Florida-He'd play DE in our 3-4 scheme. TON of upside.

Kevin Minter MLB LSU-I think MLB is a need. Hawk is more than likely gone. Sad to see him go because he was always on the field, rarely hurt. Can we count on Bishop and D.J. Smith to stay healthy? Brad Jones might be gone as well. Does anybody really even like Brad Jones? I think adding a speedy MLB that can make plays is something this defense is lacking. We need more speed and somebody that would wreak havoc. This could would be it.

Manti Te'o MLB ND-I'm weary about him because of the way he played in the BCS National Championship game. I think he could end up being another A.J. Hawk. Very consistent, but not a game changer. He could also play the way he did his whole senior year until the National Championship game. As a Notre Dame fan his first years on campus were nothing special, and he was supposed to be this man child when he came to Notre Dame. Just not completly sold on him I guess.

Matt Elam SS Florida-I'd love to see Elam in a Packer uniform. He is physical, quick and helps in the run. I think Him and Morgan Burnett would make quit a duo in the back of our secondary. Also with it looking more and more like C-Wood will be gone, we will need a replacement, sorry M.D. Jennings and McMillian. ELAM IS GREATER THAN BOTH!

Thoughts?

Since I go to UF I'd love to see either Floyd of Elam on Packers, both are awesome!

I would not take Teo at all and not because of the recent situation just because I don't think he is that good to deserve a #1 pick.  I would take Barrett Jones the OL from Alabama as he played center last year but can play all positions along the line.  If Nick Perry comes back strong and Daniels develops somemore I think we have enough bodies along the D-Line we just need them to play a little more physical.

I would look linebacker in the 2nd round.

Des Bishop, despite having a nose for the ball and a knack for making plays really doesn't have the speed to cover and he's yet to complete a full season as a starter. DJ Smith wasn't even physical enough to be a WILB, no way he hacks it as a SILB. This leaves Robert Francois and Brad Jones, who was awful against San Fran. Really not sure what they'll do here.

I would trade the pick, maby for a future first round or something.  At 26 there does not appear to be any game changers I see.  I do not think there is a must have player.  Not sure if there are other teams but if we can get rid of this pick for a future first round pick we set ourselve for a multiple picks and leverage to be able to trade other picks next year.  I was asked were I thought the Packers needs are and with the injuries it is hard to tell.  We had a ton of injuries with players who seemed to be making an impact but right when you thought they were going to break out they got hurt.  I thought we ended the year on ahigh note Nick Perry still may be that player we need him to be,  the secondary was spot on.  Jerel Worthy is another injury that impacted us, the Recievers were always hurt at least one or two were the entire season and Cedric Benson was a big loss.

So none of those players get me going I would like TT to do some majic trade the pick and fill the holes with free agents that are worth it.  We got Woodson cheap a few years back because he was a cast off considered to old we got four or five good years TT needs to hit on a player like that. I think the Saturday move was bust but worth the effort.  I think this is the hardest [part of building a team the team is there core players are thier it filling in pieces to upgrade not downgrage If TT wants to be seen as a elite the next few years will prove it.

We lost to many years when Favre was good, don't want to see tha same thing happen with rodgers.

I'm eyeing, WR Terrance Williams, OL D.J. Fluker, and HB's La'Vavion Bell and Monte Ball in the first. Granted one of the two HB's may slip to us in the 2nd, but we need a feature back. Williams reminds me of a Torey Smith, and Fluker has the size to play guard and the athleticism to play OT.

I love Montee Ball but I just can't see him behind our O-line. Our unit is way too inconsistent, lacks cohesiveness and generally maks patient runners look like crap.

I agree.  Montee Ball behind our line would not be a good combo.  Any back we have better have great vision, a great change of pace and the ability to make the first guy miss.  I have heard good things about this Stepfan Taylor out of Stanford.  He would be a nice touch in the second round

Personally , I would like to see us get a big body DL such as Jonathan Jenkins or trade down for a Sylvester Williams.  We need to add some size, strength and rotational depth on the D-line so that we can win in the trenches.  After Taylor in the second round, I would like to see the best OLine big body (preferably a center) added to the mix to help road-grade for the running game.  I don't think that we will find much at linebacker in this draft so I would rather not waste another pick on a mediocre LB.  TE or WR in the fourth if there is someone worth the pick otherwise a CB or safety for development.

They should take the best OL or pass rusher (DL or LB) on the board. A great O-line will make a good RB very good, so keep the current RBs and improve the o-line. Last thing we need to spend a #1 on is WR. Cobb, JOnes, and Nelson are a very good trio. If a big bopper TE is available after round 1, take him. Finley made himself to be a WR playing TE. We need a huge TE with great hands, not a fast, light TE with mediocre hands.

After watching him in the Senior Bowl, I would love to nab Ziggy Ansah at 26. Kid looks like a beast, and has more than enough athleticism to play 3-4 OLB. Even though we already have Clay Matthews, and Nick Perry, as the Giants have shown us in the past, you can never have too many pass rushers.

I have seen multiple mock drafts now after the combine that show GB taking Eddie Lacy.  I sure hope they do not waste their first pick on a running back.

Agreed. I honestly don't think we take a RB unless someone slides down the boards. We're a draft and develop team. So many people here keep forgetting that. That means we're stuck with Green for at least another year and probably stuck with Starks as well. I see a lot of people going with a homer pick in Ball. Ball will bust just like every other UW RB that's come out. Someone else also pointed out that Ball would stink behind our O-line. I thought our run-blocking got much better down the stretch, especially with Barclay coming in. Frankly, you look at Ball's performance when UW's O-line stunk up the joint early last season and it just proves the point that every UW back is a system back.

That said, I think we should go with Eifert in the 1st if he is there. The guy can do it all and would be a massive upgrade over Finley. Right now, outside of Finley and Crabtree, we're anemic at TE. Quarless is NOT going to be back, Williams hasn't developed the way we'd like him to, and Ryan Taylor hasn't really seen the field at all. If we're going to utilize the TE spot, we need a guy we can rely on.

If Eifert isn't there, we should trade down into the first 10 picks of the 2nd, grab Eric Reid, and then use that extra pick on a wildcard or as ammo to trade up somewhere. We'll get at least 2 comp picks for Flynn and Wells, I'm guessing they'll be a 5th and 7th.

I am hoping we address our defensive line with free agency, in no particular order:
Then with the first two picks in the draft I would like to see:
  • 1st Round:  Alec Ogletree, OLB (Georgia)
  • 2nd Round:  Montee Ball, HB (Wisconsin)

My wildcard would be if Alabama HB Eddie Lacy is available at 26...if he is I think the Packers should take him without hesitation.  I am also interested to see how far South Carolina HB Marcus Lattimore falls.  He could be a mid-round steal, but I am not sure he makes it out of the 2nd.

Thr o line was ranked 29 th in rush blocking while also giving up 51 sacks. The short yardage rushing situations have also been pathetic the past couple of years. I am sick of watching Rodgers throw on 3rd and short. The return of Sherrod might help but I want the best interior lineman, preferably center. D line and LBs look like needs but the return of Bishop, Perry, and Smith will help more than any rookie can contribute. Bishop alone can turn the D around.Neal, Daniels, and Worthy will also have a greater impact than a rookie. I say o line or best player available

These are the players I have my eye on.

CB Xavier Rhodes - He is an athletic freak, with a ton of upside, I compare him to Dominque Rodgers-Cromartie when he came out, but I think Rhodes is better in man coverage. He is 6'-2" and runs a sub 4.4. Take him then convert Tramon into a FS?

WR Terrance Williams - He is tall and fast, if we lose Jennings, he would be a very nice replacement, I compare him to Torrey Smith.

LT Lane Johnson - He has the most upside of any OT in this draft, he is more athletic than some WR's, and is a 300+ lb LT, that ran a sub 4.8, and from what I saw, he has great footwork too.

HB Eddie Lacy - We need to find our selves a feature back, and I think Lacy can become that, he is a hardnosed one cut and go runner, just what we need.
DE/OLB Eziekial Ansah - Ok, so we might have to trade up to get him, but I have him as the best DE in this draft, and he is more than athletic enough to transition to OLB, he reminds me a lot of Jason Pierre-Paul.

SS Shamarko Thomas - Ok so this would be somewhat of a reach, and we may be able to trade down and still get him, but in all likihood Elam would be gone, and Thomas had a very nice combine, he reminds me a lot of Bob Sanders. He is a tough in the box safety that will come up and knock your lights out. Just what our defense needs.

I hope ted drafts a lineman it dont matter eitherside floydd would be great but so would a dj fluker

i could see ted drafting two wide receivers in the early to mid rounds also since Cobb and Jordy had troubles staying healthy for a full season plus ted loves a stable full of wide receivers, hell he might pull a fast one and grab a wideout in the first

short and sweet.... i have said it for two years, i want Montee Ball! Mental toughness, short stature gets lost behind the line and most importantly it has been forever scince we have had a good recieving back. Badger-Packer has backing here
