Darrelle Revis is the most talented player in the NFL. Yes, you read that correctly, no does a better job at their position and when you consider the barriers put in place to stop CBs from succeeding, you understand why he is the best. If the Jets don't get at least a 1st and a 2nd, it isn't worth it. I'd rather trade Cromartie for draft picks and sign Revis next year but that's just me.

Big deal. To me it's like saying "there's no better long-snapper in the game than..."
You don't need great CB's to win. You don't even need good CB's to win, above average will do. Look at the 4 CB's in this years sb, and every other sb for that matter.
The only way a shut down corner doesn't matter is if you have a GREAT pass rush.
News Flash.... The NY Jets have had one of THE WORST pass rushes over the past four years, even with a overall Defense rating no lower than eighth (last season). Our overall Defense has had a one ranking, a two and a five in the other three seasons under Rex Ryan and Pettine.
WE NEED OUTSIDE LINEBACKERS WHO CAN RUSH THE PASSER!!!! I'VE BEEN SAYING THIS SINCE BEFORE WE DRAFTED VERNON GHOLSTON UNDER MANGINI / TANNENBAUM!
I agree with C-Mart, if you can trade Cromartie for a 2nd round pick, then by all means.
Denver Broncos ALL WORD LEGENDARY QB AND CURRENT GM, JOHN ELWAY..... thinks his Broncos are one shut down corner away from a Championship. I think John Elway would understand the importance of a shut down corner more so than a couple of Jet fans.
One huge misconception about the Jes defense is that their pass defense was one of the best last year. Yes, statistically, it ranked second in the league but how many times did the opposing team have to pass the ball on the Jets? When you consider that our run defense was atrocious and that we were losing in almost every game, you start to see why the passing yards were so down. Cromartie was good this year, don't get me wrong but Kyle Wilson bails on a route way too quickly and both safeties will be gone next year. Does anyone here actually feel comfortable about Josh Bush and Antonio Allen starting next year? I sure as hell don't. I think they could be nice players but they haven't proven anything yet. If the Jets go into next year with Cromarti and Kyle Wilson as the starters and two new safeties, who is going to be the leader? Word is that Cromartie isn't the greatest team mate in the world and that Revis has been the one of the best leaders in the locker room since he got here. As bad as Eric Smith is, he won't be here to teach coverages and calls anymore. Do we want Cromartie to be the leader of our secondary?
That comparison is one of the worst I've ever seen on message boards.
Ok smart arse. Then please name me a shutdown corner IN THE HISTORY OF THE NFL that has EVER won a SB outside of deion Sanders. You can't, because theyre aren't any, because shut-down corners are nothing but hype.
The only way a shut down corner doesn't matter is if you have a GREAT pass rush.
OKAY! Looks like you have a solution to the problem now! Get rid of your over-priced, over-valued CB and use that money on a pass rush. This is my point exactly!
By the way, have the Jets won a meaningful game with Revis in the lineup? Usually when a team has "the best player in the league" at a "key" position, that team plays for a ring. Revis has yet to play for a ring.
Our overall Defense has had a one ranking, a two and a five in the other three seasons under Rex Ryan and Pettine
Yep, and your defense plays 25% of their games against the Dolphins and Bills, Don't get too carried away by stats.
P.S. Mike Pettine Jr. was my highschool football coach. We won the state championship the year AFTER he left for the NFL in '03. Maybe if the Jets fire Pettine you'll win next year like we did!!
Denver Broncos ALL WORD LEGENDARY QB AND CURRENT GM, JOHN ELWAY..... thinks his Broncos are one shut down corner away from a Championship
Did you preface your comment with "ALL WORD LEGENDARY QB" as if it qualifies him to build a defense??? Broncos have had a shutdown corner for 10 years and haven't sniffed a SB. Wasn't it the safety who got beat deep to lose that game? How about you upgrade the safety position to be as good as your LB's are and then ignore the CB position Mr. Elway????
It amazes me how lost all these NFL GM's are when it comes to building a winner. Elway watches his safety get torched and the Broncos go home as the #1 seed, and then you're telling me his comments are "we're a shutdown corner away..." Well, sounds to me like they're a safety away from a ring and I'm not even an "ALL WORD LEGENDARY QB".
If CB's don't make a difference then trade Revis to the Patriots who will definately give the Jets two #1's. The Patriots will then win two of the next four Super Bowls. Go ahead and do it.
A shutdown corner is nothing without a pass rush, but a great pass rush can win games without a shutdown corner. In 2009, while the Jets were low on sacks, they did hurry opposing QBs quite a bit. Revis was a help by eliminating the "when in doubt, throw to this guy" receiver. But Revis was not, is not, and never will be the key to the Super Bowl. The Steelers never won the Super Bowl with Rod Woodson. The Raiders never won it with Charles Woodson, and the Packers didn't win it until four years after he joined them. Champ Bailey never won a Super Bowl, and Deion Sanders was on Super Bowl winning teams quarterbacked by Troy Aikman and Steve Young, and had Jerry Rice, Michael Irvin, Emmit Smith, as well as defenses with Ken Norton Jr., Leon Lett, Darren Woodson, and many other stars. He didn't do a thing to make the Falcons competitive despite being the best corner in the league.
Revis is not going to be a Jet, and that's going to happen either this year or next. It's inevitable; Tannenbaum screwed this team up by offering Sanchez a huge contract but not Revis. The Jets would have to gut their team to pay Revis, and he can't win the Super Bowl alone. I say trade him now and get something for him rather than just letting him walk and getting nothing.
Major trades can work. Remember Jimmy Johnson trading Herschal Walker to the Vikings and everyone thinking that was crazy, even though the Cowboys got six high picks for Walker? Considering one of the picks ended up being the all time leading rusher, another one of the best QBs in NFL history, and a number of other players that led the Cowboys to three Super Bowls in four years, I'd say that trade worked out. I also think we're giving Revis too much credit. The best player in the NFL? The greatest corner of all time?
The NFL rules are set up to make corner backs fail and make QBs succeed. Revis has been about as dominant as a player can be at a position that is put in the worst spot possible. Yes, he is the best NFL player because of this.
I can give you four off the top of my head besides Deion Sanders:
1. Willie Brown - 1X Super Bowl Champion, 5X AFL All Star, 4X Pro Bowl, 1960's AFL All Decade Team, 1970's NFL All Decade Team 2. Mel Blount - 4X Super Bowl Champion, 5X Pro Bowl, 4X All Pro, 2X All Pro 2nd Team, 1975 NFL Defensive Player of the Year, 1980's NFL All Decade Team
3. Lester Hayes - 2X Super Bowl Champion, 5X Pro Bowl, 1X All Pro, 5X All Pro 2nd Team, 1980 NFL Defensive Player of the Year, 1980's NFL All Decade Team
4. Darrell Green - 2X Super Bowl Champion, 7X Pro Bowl, 4 X All Pro, 1990's NFL All Decade Team
And I assure you, that if you go through the Super Bowl winning teams, you'll find a lot of great to very good corners that I haven't mentioned here.
What's wrong? You're not a fan of logic and reality?
Actually, I'm a BIG fan of logic and reality. Not a fan of an ignorant blowhard who apparently thinks the NFL began in the mid 90's. And he still missed Darrell Green, Rod Woodson, Charles Woodson and Ty Law.
I can give you four off the top of my head besides Deion Sanders:
OK great. You named 4 guys that played 20-40 years ago. We aren't playing NFL GM 1985 here, we're talking about what it takes to win today. IMO, you need average CB's. If you look at the SB over the past 12 years, they all feature household names at the LB and Safety position, but there are almost no probowl CB's on any of those teams. Just take a look for yourself. Thats enough for me to make the statement that "the cb position is the most over-rated and over-hyped position in the NFL".
Sorry my opinion ruins your day. My advice, don't take it personal we are just sharing opinions here fella.
And I assure you, that if you go through the Super Bowl winning teams, you'll find a lot of great to very good corners that I haven't mentioned here.
Nope. I've already done that. In the past 12 years, all you'll find are a few guys that AT BEST had a great season (Tramon Williams -GB) and were able to garner the national medias over-hype machine for putting together a stretch of good football.
Everyone keeps bringing up Charles Woodson as an example. Charles Woodson played safety in the playoffs in 2010 ladies and gentlemen, not CB. The Packers CB's were Tramon Williams, and a ROOKIE named Sam Shields. Woodson played a hybrid safety role with Nick Collins, And yes, they won a SB with a rookie CB.
Actually, I'm a BIG fan of logic and reality. Not a fan of an ignorant blowhard who apparently thinks the NFL began in the mid 90's. And he still missed Darrell Green, Rod Woodson, Charles Woodson and Ty Law.
Try to pay attention to my posts, and then you won't come off looking like a name-calling, adolescent fool. We are talking about Revis here dude and todays NFL. You call me a blowhard and then run off a list of "great CB's" as if you're a fan of the 49ers or Steelers bragging about having 5-6 rings. Yay for you, you came up with a list of 4 guys. Unfortunately, 2 of those guys u mentioned didn't even play CB in the superbowl they won. They played safety. Both woodson's played safety for their respective teams in the SB. Rod Woodson as a matter of fact only played CB in like 1 out of the 4 years he was in Baltimore.
As for the other 2: Green is a good example, but its not 1985, the NFL is different today. Ty Law is a better example of my point. He's not going to the hall of fame, he's not wayyyyy over-hyped, he was just a very solid CB for a long time. I would have taken a TY Law, who's probably a peg below Revis, and gotten tremendous value out of him. However, if I remember correctly Ty Law left NE because he wanted that "shutdown corner" money and NE was smart enough to say no to him and Asante Samuel. All NE needs is a stud FS to pair up with Mayo and they will have a ring again. They won't make a play for Revis, they are smarter than that. They understand football the same way i do.
