Not Any Time Soon

I never felt quite comfortable with Glavine here to be honest.

Agree with this.. also remember how bad he pitched that final crucial game of the season and then fled back to Atlanta like everyone suspected he would. While he was a decent pitcher for us overall I just never thought of him as a genuine Met or a guy that favored NY over his old team.  Only reason he signed with NY anyway was they offered him the best contract, strictly about the money at that point to him. When it came time he had enough money and had to go with his heart, he chose Atlanta.

Oh and people, the Yankees are not giving up Cano!  I look at their current roster and at this stage Cano is the last player on that team who they'd trade.

Kind of fuzzy on this, but was it Carlos Beltran who offered himself to the Yankees at a lower contract cost?

Yep. but it wasn't just the big failure in that final big game. If you remember for the final 3 months of that season he seemed careless and constantly hinting about returning to Atlanta and constant talk about his buddies,Smotzeee and Hudson... other Atlanta players when talking to reporters. It was obvious what was on his mind, and how much he cared about the rest of his final year with the Mets.

Following Beltrán's impressive performance in the 2004 season, he became a free agent. The [New York Yankees] were tipped as favorites and Beltrán allegedly offered them a $19 million discount. The Yankees declined and the crosstown [New York Mets] signed him to a 7-year, $119-million contract, the biggest in franchise history at the time. It was the tenth contract in baseball history to surpass $100 million.

Vader,  Thanks for the confirmation.

I'd just much rather have a group of our own players lead us along with players who think of themselves as Mets first and don't have this "I always wanted to be a yankee but I'll play across town" feeling going on.-thomasam

I feel I understand what  thomasam  is implying and I agree to a limited degree.  Carlos Beltran serves as the polar opposite of the statement.  Beltran wanted a ring, not the biggest payday.  The Yankees in 2004 had won 7 straight Divisions, 5 of 7 ALCS and 3 WS.  The Mets had over the 2002-4 seasons played .439 ball, finished a cumulative 86 games GB while finishing next to last and last twice.  Wanting to sign with the Yankees for 19 M less is to his credit

Beltran still doesn't have a ring although he has been to the NLCS three times and lost each time.  20 G, 71 ABs.  A slash line of .338/.447/.746 with 8 Hrs, 11 RBI, 7 SB.  I'll always welcome the player who wants the ring more than the biggest contract.  Beltran was a winner because he was still hungry even with the 119 M.

After that first year with the Mets, Glavine was as good as any and most times better than Steve Trachsel, Al Leiter, or Pedro Martinez.  Keeping in mind that he was pitching ages 37-41 he averaged 33 GS and 200 inn., he also finished 5 games over .500 on teams that won and lost 405 games.  In the postseason for the Mets he was 2-1 in 3 starts with a 1.60 ERA.

ATW, you are right about the last 6 weeks of 2007.  Glavine's record over the last 8 starts was 2-2, but the team record was 2-6.  In three of the losses; Glavine left the mound down one run after 5 innings, 1 on and 2 out in the 7th of a tie game, and up 2 after 7innings.  Three games all winable, any one of which would have extended the season.

Glavine is a future Hall of Fame pitcher and his failures with the Mets were age related not a result of effort.  I don't believe that players of that magnitude ever "mail it in".

I think it had a little bit to do with both age(being tired out near the end of the season) and his lack of care and effort. Let's face it, the guy had an attitude change in those final 3 months of the season. Could tell during interviews he had in that 2nd half that he had Atlanta on his mind all the way, obsessively talking and hinting more about a return to the Braves than the remainder of the 2007 season with the Mets. It was bad, I thought it was arrogant, selfish, and listening to his constant talk and stories about Hudson, Frenchie, and "Smoltzeee" during that 2nd half while he was still with the Mets was lame.
