If i got to be packers gm for one season

January 29, 2013 6:46 pm

Please i like to hear other peoples insights on what they would do to make the Packers better if they had one offseason/season to do it!

First i will start in free agency. In free agency there is winners and losers when it comes to teams signing them, mostly losers for teams who go big or go home approach **cough** **cough** Eagles two years ago (dream team). You can bring in the biggest name athlete or athletes off the market and still miss the playoffs so you gotta make sure the guys are gonna fit your organizations plans and coaching scheme and most importantly make sure the dolar amount is worth it.

FREE AGENCY

which brings me to my bold move as a gm, bring in Reggie Bush, haha i know what some guys are thinking thats a dumb move. But if i had it my way we would only keep five wideouts, four runningbacks thats right FOUR, and three tight ends.

Reggie has shown he can lineup at receiver and runningback. Rodgers could audible from a four wide receiver set to a five or viceversa and it would most likely be pretty damn affective.  No Bush would not be my workhorse back not at all I will find my workhorse in the draft plus i got dejuan harris also. But the NFL is all about the matchups.  We loved doing the toss plays and different audible formations with Cobb imagine if we had two guys that could do it.  This would be my only free agent move simply because of cap space you got core players like rodgers, matthews, and Raji nearing the end of their contracts.

The only packer free agents i would bring back is Shields to compete against Tramon Williams spot since he was very up and down this year, and Brad Jones for quality depth at linebacker posistion.

DRAFT DAY TRADES & Possibly Release

Im seeing what i can get for draft picks out of Hawk and Finley.  I think at best Green bay might get a 4th round pick for Hawk and a 3rd round pick for Finley since he still is only 25 and could possibly have a lot of upside.  And if Woodson didnt restructure his contract, it just doesnt make sense to keep him paying a 37 year old corner 10 million to play one season is foolish and since i brought Bush in its either restructure or bye. I love Woodson dont get me wrong, but its a young mans sport and i dont know what safety at the age of 37 has had a productive injury free season. So right before or during the draft i got my trade offers to go through and im just gonna say i got two mid round picks it would leave me with a 1st,2nd,3rd, three 4th,5th,6th,and7th round picks. I got a dozen picks to add depth and find playmakers.

DRAFT DAY

Im not hitting the panic button on our defense like last year and going all in on defense because lets be honest our offense was just about as inconsistent as the defense both sides need help.

1st round-Not the flashy pick but i go with Alabamas center Barret Jones, why because He has played all the posistions on the line and played them well through his collegiate career.  Hes arguably the best center coming into the draft and lets be honest dietrich smith is like a C- at center and tj Lang is at best when healthy a C+ at left guard.  Plus packer nation doesnt know what derrek sharodd has yet.

2nd round-Which brings me to my next selection, Offensive tackle Kyle Long. A raw athlete coming out of Oregon but with tons of upside could be a good righ tackle if we moved bulaga to left tackle where he should be and Kyle could challenge tj lang for his spot at left guard. Which would either improve Langs play by playing for his job or going to the younger talent with tons of upside

3rd round-Montae Ball, yes i know what your thinking first three selections is nothing but offense?  When was the last time green bay had a hundred yard game rusher in the regular season....hmmmm 43 games ago how do you ignore that. how many times did Aaron Rodgers get sacked last year hmmm was it 50 or 51 im not exactly sure i just know it was 50 or greater. Imagine a runningback group of Montae Ball, reggie bush, dejuan Harris, and possibly Alex Green. The last time green bay finished with the same starting runningback going into week one and ending in week 17 was back in 2006 when Ahman was on his way out. HOW DO YOU IGNORE THAT....yes its a passing league but you still need balance in playoffs to win.

4th round draft Inside linebacker Jon Bostic to compete with Bishop and Smith on inside

4th round tight end dion sims, big tight end who can block and catch and is tough to bring down

last 4th round pick i grab a defensive lineman

Fifth round i grab another offensive lineman to develop

6th round another d-lineman to add depth and competition

7th round- Kicker.....i dont have to explain this pick

Lineup

Imagine our offensive line from left to right Bulaga at left tackle, Tj Lang at left guard, Center Barret Jones, right guard Sitton, right tackle Kyle Long or derreck sharodd if he shakes the injury bug. We could finally have a shot at a great offensive line for years to come.

Wideouts since i also forgot i would let jennings walk. Jordy,Jones,Cobb, boykin, and maybe a street free agent or J.Ross

tight ends Dion sims, Dj williams, Andrew Quarless

running backs Montae Ball, reggie bush ( who could be utlized as a fourth or fifth wideout), dejaun harris and possibly alex green since the runningback posistion can never stay healthy for us. I let Starks go because lets be honest he will never shake the injury bug.

QB-RODGERS

Defense

D lineman could have one of the fourth round picks or Neal or Daniels, then Raji, and Picket

Linebackers it would be Clay Matthews on one side then Bishop, then smith or bostic whoever wants it more then perry

secondary i would leave it, could prolly be tweaked a little bit like bringing in a jarius byrd which i would definatly look at doing other wise everything else would be the same.

I love the packers and im not trashing ted this is simply the moves i would make maybe Reggie Bush is a bit too much specially since i want greenbay to draft montae ball but Bush is a playmaker and could have two to three productive seasons left in him and like i said its all about the matchups. I trade finley because i dont believe paying a guy close to 10 million to be thrown at 4 times a game and only cathing two. Hawk has been average and in a 3-4 defense you need inside guys that are playmakers which i strongly believe Bostic could be a draft gem if he doesnt move up.  We would have a fresh and rejuvinated offensive line and stable of runningbacks and still have a strong receiver corp which equals to keeping opposing teams offense off the field and rodgers not on his back.  The defense believe it or not i think is damn close people forget we lost Bishop, Smith, and Perry you get those guys back  plus guys like Daniels, Neal, and worthy have one more year under their belt i would have to believe we would could only get better.  I just believe this year its a must to emphasis offensive line and runningbacks im sick of watching rodgers droppingback 40 times a game and being our lead rusher for half the games.

Tell me what ya guys think

Couple issues i have with your ideas.

1) Barret Jones has been rated by many of the so called experts around 35-40th best player he is said to be a sure thing but your talking about drafting him about 10 picks to high. Also i didn't think EDS played bad at center.

2) i thought about Bulaga at LT few months ago and it was pointed out by another poster he's slow has fall starts and gets beat at RT, so i watched some games and i agree Bulaga is a decent RT not sure he is capable of being a LT. Better chance Sherrod or Datko at LT. Further why waste a 2nd pick on Long to play RT if Bulaga can play LT. You then would have Newhouse or Barclay to play RT when there are holes at ILB and S and need depth at DT,WR and TE.

3) not sure Ball still there in the 3rd rd. and his running style doesn't fit the Packers.

Yes you address some depth issues but not til the 4th round.  I still think the Packers could spend another #1 pick on LT if what they have in house can't beat out Newhouse. I think Newhouse can maybe be competition at LG.

I would like to see a DT in first 3 rd's that is like 6-4 330, to play on 1st and 2nd down and maybe rotate with Neal who can more of 3rd down specialist.

In regards to Bush not a bad idea not sure what kind of money it would take anything more then say 3 million and i would rather see if they could find a ILB or S in FA. Not sure MM would utilize Bush properly.

Here's what I would do if I was in charge of Green Bay for this offseason. Free agency: green bay needs a running back that can get those tough yards and compliment rising star RB DuJuan Harris. So I say look no further than free agent RB Peyton Hillis. He won't be resigned by KC. He would be my guy. 2. I'd look at a smaller name fre agent receiver. Guys like Brandon Gibson, Julian Edelman, Kevin Ogletree, Donnie Avery, or Louis Murphy could all contribute to those team as a #4 or 5 receiver. 3. Get another big man on the defensive line. Green bay's Super Bowl hero Howard Green is a FA, maybe we should look at resigning him. Other notable free agents: Ron Brace, Trevor Laws, Vaughn Martin could help out this 3-man line. 4. We need help at both inside and outside linebacker. So for inside linebacker I say go after Larry Grant from San Francisco. He has a ton of talent and why would San Francisco try to resign him since they have Willis and bowman? The outside linebacker spot could be solved by going after someone like Shaun Phillips or Antwan Barnes from San Diego. 5. I'd look at free agent kickers. Neil rackers is available, Steven Hauschka, Josh Brown. That would be my free agent bit. Packers draft picks. 1st rd pick: safety Kenny Vaccaro or safety Matt Elam whoever is available. Preferably Kenny Vaccaro. 2nd rd pick: Brandon Williams nose tackle from Southern Missouri 3rd rd pick: Jordan Reed tight end from Florida 4th rd pick: Brandon Jenkins OLB/DE from Florida State 5th rd pick: Chase Thomas OLB/DE from Stanford 6th rd pick: Cobi Hamilton WR from Arkansas 7th rd pick: BPA

Sorry Tyler but I can't say that I am lining up with many of your priorities.  First of all, defense was the achilles heal of this team.  The last couple of years have seen us unable to stop good teams in the tough games.  To focus on our offense through the first 3 picks ignores the area of the team that loses us games.  Despite the pass happy league, getting to the Super Bowl is based on your ability to shut other teams down.  Our first 2 of 3 picks need to go on defense.  We need a 345 lbs. Jonathan Jenkins to help the D-line control the line of scrimmage.  We could use a faster ILB or another pass rushing OLB or fast, tough safety.

I do agree that a second round pick for a talented RB (Stepfan Taylor) would help this team move forward on offense.  I also agree that drafting an OC/OG in the middle rounds will help build some depth.  We have a lot of bodies on the O-line.  With Bulaga and Sherrod coming back and Newhouse, Barlcay and EDS emerging, I don't see the need to waste picks on more middle level O-line picks - we already have a lot of those guys.

If I were the GM for one season here's what I would focus on:

1. Getting some decent offensive linemen (it would help improve the running game as well)

2. Seeing that Jennings and Finley are gone due to free agency and Donald Driver is retiring it wouldn't hurt to draft another receiver

3. Get rid of Dom Capers and bring in someone else at D.C.

4. Work on the defensive depth chart

This is what I would do...

Free Agency
Franchise Greg Jennings - If we let him hit the open market we all know the Lions, Vikings, or Bears will end up signing him. So lets tag him, and shop him, so we can decide where he goes.

Sign OL Jarmon Bushrod - He is one of the more underrated OL in the NFL, he would be a very nice replacement for Newhouse who I think sucks.

Sign Antoine Cason - I think he would be very good in our scheme, maybe not as good as Woodson was, but he would be a very nice signing for us.

If there's money left kick the tires on Reggie Bush - I love your idea of signing Bush, but I don't think we will have much left over, if we sign the other two. Plus, I think Harris can be utilized a lot like Bush has been.

Roster Cuts

DB Charles Woodson - Try restructuring first, if that doesn't work he may have to go, love him to death, and if we do cut him something inside of me wishes he would retire and take a position within the organization.

LT Marshall Newhouse - See above.

Draft

1st Round (Possibilities)

  • WR Terrance Williams - We will need another WR if we do let Jennings go. And Williams is tall and fast, I compare him to a Torrey Smith.
  • DE/OLB Ziggy Ansah - You can never have too many pass rushers, and I loved what he did in the Senior Bowl.
  • OL D.J. Fluker - He is a monster of an OL who dominated in the National Championship.
2nd Round

  • SS Robert Lester - A big in the box safety who will knock your lights out, just what we need, may help to stop that pesky read option nonsense.
3rd Round (Possibilities)

  • Tyrann Mathieu - I know, I know, but I think he would be a very good player in the NFL, and by picking him in the 3rd you're not losing much. We all saw the impact Jenoris Jenkins, who had similar charecter issues had in St. Louis.
  • HB Marcus Lattimore - I know, another high risk high reward type player. However, McGahee suffered the same injurie in college and has gone on to have great success in the NFL.
  • HB Kentron Barner - If we don't sign Bush, Barner could be the next best option. We have lacked a true burner at the HB position since, well Green?

First of all, anyone that thinks we should completely BLOW a pick on Monte Ball should turn in their card as a knowledgable poster immediately and admit to picking him as a homer pick and nothing else. Ball is slow, Ball is a finesse runner, Ball is the latest Brian Calhoun...yes...I went there, deal with it and get over it...he WILL NOT make it in the league...

Anyway, if I were GM, I'd serious address the Secondary and draft a bonifide Safety early, possibly someone like DJ Swearinger in the 2nd or 3rd round. I'd use my first on a BPA based on needs. Someone else suggested Terrence Williams and I'm on board with that. There are several options in the mid to latter rounds to address the front-7. Frankly, if I had to draft tomorrow and got a 5th and a 6th round comp pick as well. I'd trade back into the 2nd trade back INTO the 2nd while giving up our 4th and go with the following:

2a. Terrence Williams, WR, Baylor
2b. Barrett Jones, C, Alabama
2c. Jamar Taylor, CB, Boise St.
3. DJ Swearinger, S, South Carolina
5a. Zeke Motta, S, Notre Dame
6a. David Bass, Missouri Western
6b. William Gholston, DE, Michigan St.(he'll fall that far)
7. BPA.

They also said Curtis Martin and Terrelle Davis wouldn't amount to anything and they were wrong just like you are with ball. Not a homer pick at all and finesse runner? I don't know what you see compared to the rest of the college/nfl. And out of all the weaknesses on our defense pretty sure run support is a bit more important. I might not be the most knowledgable on football but Montee Ball will succeed mark my words

Name me RB's from Wisconsin that were stars in the NFL.  They all sucked and the o lines make them look good.  Dayne, Moss, Bennett, Calhoun, Hill, all suck or sucked.

Cyorgan- I'm not sure about your guys you suggested but I thought about that same thing this morning.  Trade out of the first and pick up more second rounders.  A lot of mocks have the Packers taking Barrett Jones but very few I have seen have him going in the first round if its not to the Packers.  Is he a first round talent and if not why reach?

Thanks Malibu, that's exactly my point with Ball. He's overrated; plain and simple. Plus, again, I don't see us giving up on Starks and/or Green as much as I'd like to myself.

Schind. Jones is falling down the boards right now due to the injury issues he dealt with. The reason I have us dropping into the second is because I see him going somewhere in the pick 35-55 range. Almost literally smack dab between our two picks. That said, the more I read about Brian Schwenke, the more I'm intrigued. Jones gives us more versatility but I think Schwenke could be a solid 3rd round pick for us at the moment(of course the combine changes everything).

The Packers just need a big durable back who can convert on short yardage situations. Randall Cobb can be a Reggie Bush. Just having cobb in the backfield can open up a lot of options. I expect him to get more carries next year.
