I haven't read Braun's name anywhere so they were probably just speculating.

The steroid testing implemented in 2005 resolved nothing, it just changed the PED of choice.  HGH and Ryan Braun's favorite, testosterone became the tools of the cheaters.  On day after the Hall of Fame closed the door on Bonds and Clemens, Michael Weiner and Selig announced that there would be random and unannounced testing for HGH during the season and that MLB would establish a testosterone base level on each player.  Selig in a gratuitous statement yesterday lauded the work of MLB in working with federal and state agencies to clean up the game of baseball.  Clearly the joint announcement by Weiner and Selig was reactive trying to appear active.  Every effort does help, but now is the time to drive home the intent.

Melky Cabrera after being traded by the Yankees to the Braves hit .255 with 4 HRs and 42 RBIs in 2010, he was released.  The Royals signed him(1.3) as a free agent and in 2011 he added 50 points to his BA, hit 18 HRs and drove in 87 runs and was then traded to the Giants.  Last season he was caught in late July-early Aug. and suspended  for 50 games.  At that time he was hitting .346 with 11 HRs and 60 RBIs, numbers that would probably been career highs in his walk year.  He recently signed a 2 yr. 16 M deal with the Blue Jays.  Based on ability, Cabrera might be out of baseball or walking around with a Japanese-Spanish dictionary but performance enhancing drugs and a willingness to violate the law and the rules of baseball have earned him 16 M on top of the 6 M the Braves paid him.

Cabrera will be the poster boy for future marginal players willing to commit a crime for a big payday.  Some need a gun or lock picks to break the law, Bernie Madoff needed neither but all have a common destination involving steel bars.  Cabrera and his future understudies will never face prison and all the testing that can be implemented will not stop them from tying to cash in.

The answer is, IMO, deterent.  First positive is a one year suspension and the team will be permitted to void your contract if they wish.  A repeat will result in a permanent ban from MLB, and this should a requirement for any nation participating in the WBC that any player banned from MLB for PED's would not be eligible to play professional ball in those countries.

I agree that the lack of a deterent is the problem. However the Major League Baseball Players Association will never allow owners/teams to void a contract. I like the 1 year suspension, and also think that while on suspension that the player should NOT be paid for the missed time.

It's all bullshit****. I graduated HS in 87 and numerous guys were using for sports and to just look good then. Baroid Bonds probably used his entire career. Same goes for all those players. A-Rod used in HS, hell they all did and they tainted all the greatest records in sports.

You want to stop the cheating then implement a lifetime ban for first offense. I guarantee that would knock this shit**** off. Just like Rose violated the "golden rule" and has been banned then ban the cheaters who alter the game and its integrity.

I know, and I wonder how many more guys that played in the 80's were using. A lot of people seem to think that just because the steroid thing started getting a ton of attention in the late 90's that that's the only time most players were using. Not true. A lot of people don't know or forget that steroids were even easier to get in the late 70's and 80's, because many doctors throughout the US would prescribe them in those days not fully aware of the longterm dangers yet or under pressure from anyone not to prescribe them. Laws were also not as strict in the 70's and 80's and things in general were a lot more "confidential" in those days.

Even today doctors still don't know the longterm efforts/dangers of using does on the body.

I agree players of all sports were using during the 80s and to just took off during the 90s. It is believed that German soldiers are given testosterone to increase their performance on the battlefield.

Roids have been used in sports dating back to the 50s. Accusations are made of steroid use in 1952 by Russian Olympic wrestling team that the Germans were using. Then the Russians started using, at the world weightlifting championships in Vienna, a Soviet Union coach informs U.S. coach Dr. John Ziegler, that the Soviet team was using testosterone. On returning home, Dr. Ziegler began using testosterone with his weightlifters.

cj,  you're even more hardcore than I am, but the thought of a one year suspension followed by a ban as step two is gaining traction, Matt Holiday called for that w/ the possibility of seeking readmission after two years.  Peter Gammons and Ken Rosenthal have also supported strongly similar penalties.  With a Players Assoc. that is starting to listen to the majority rather than protect the minority this or something close may come to pass.  Yet there will always be the contrarian.  Hardball's Craig C......?  on Hotstove this AM said that since Alex Rodriguez was unable to return and his career ended.  Even if he was found to be guilty in this latest Biogensis reportin addition to his 2009 admission he would still vote for his HOF induction because he never was suspended.  I would guess that Ryan Braun would also get the same simple minded generousity.

Thought occured to me that if the NFL ever started testing with intent, that the first season in wouldn't start until after Halloween while 97% of the league served suspensions

We were just talking about Yankees prospects yesterday and now their former prized prospect that they hyped up relentlessly over the past 3-4 years, Jesus Montero now linked to PEDs and this clinic.

The Yankees would be the go to team in any PEDs discussion;  A -Rod, Clemens, Pettitte, Jason Giambi, Melky Cabrera, Sheffield, Cervelli, Montero, Kevin Brown, David Justice, Ricky Bones, Bartolo Colon, Knoblauch, Ron Villone, Mike Stanton, Jason Grimsley, Velarde, Todd Williams, Rondell White.

Of course there would some Mets players with some explaining to do as well.

How could you forget Canseco? Who just happened to be teamates with Jeter when he was in his walk year and had his best season across the board. Not that anyone in baseball history ever juiced one year to get a big contract. *cough cough Brady Anderson*.

Confusing sentence there, are you saying Melky, A Rod, Cruz, Braun were not given banned substances or that they just found more info on them?
