heres how i see it. either he comes back and can be worth some production. if hes still (with some miracle) an above average 3rd basemen or DH, then play him. hes not going anywhere and its not worth cutting off the nose to spite the face.
if hes terrible however, then we bench him, maybe release him. it all depends on what he can do.
