Release Peterman

February 5, 2013 2:12 pm

I usually just sit back and read the boards. Just couldn't contain myself of the news!!
Hated this fat bastard! Can not say the front office is doing things right 24/7... this is for sure going in the direction I like.
I will implode if they put Rieff at guard. Busted pick IMHO if he moves inside. Nagy or a FA should fill void.
I shall go back into hiding now.

I think ZWIC needs some cymbalta!!!

I agree with this. If they wanted a guard, they should of just drafted decastro.

Whomever the Lions are going to put at Left Tackle they should do it and move Backus to Right Guard if they keep him, IMHO.

I would like to see Rieff at LT and move Backus where ever needed when all is done. See what Rieff has while we have Backus if needed. I am so scared they keep Ravioli. That dude blows. At 6 million cap hit, not worth it.
If they keep Backus at LT and Rieff at RT Sims and Cherilus at G an d Nagy at C. Draft a G/C guy in the 3rd or later.
Sims is not the reason for such a weak interior OL. It was Ravioli and Peter Griffin...

Release Peterman

February 5, 2013 7:52 pm

Here are my predictions for the Lions offensive line:

Peterman already released, Backus will be next and then Raoila.  Raoila will only be released IF the Lions front office believes Bill Nagy could take over at Center and remain healthy.  If not, I could see them bringing Raoila back.  The other scenario could be if the Lions can draft someone like Barrett Jones in the 2nd round too -- Raoila would be gone in that scenario as well.

Detroit needs to blow up the offensive line and completely revamp it, sans Rob Sims and Gosder Cherilous.

Never been a huge fan of Cherilous, but they were talking about him on the radio today and said he graded out as the 2nd best RT in the NFL behind Andre Smith.  So re-signing him should be a must, as he is youngest guy on the line.

Our line would look like this:

RT Cherilous
G   Rob Sims
C   Bill Nagy
G   Jason Fox or whoever they bring in
LT  Riley Reiff

If they can get Barrett Jones or any other player in the 1st two rounds -- they could put them in at either G or C and shift Nagy over, if need be.  If by some chance Luke Joeckel drops to us -- he could take over at LT and Reiff could be moved to G (though that would be a wasted 1st round pick last year)  Or if by chance they trade down and end up with Warmack -- he could move in at G immediately and Jason Fox can continue to do what he has done best for the Lions since we drafted him 4 years ago -- stand on the sideline.

Use the money they save on releasing all these players and spend it on defense.  LOL.

Peterman already released, Backus will be next and then Raoila.

I don't see Backus going anywhere with his low cap number. He gives us one more year of quality left tackle play while giving Reiff a year at RT to hone his craft. We're already looking at replacing 3 starters on the o-line, so it makes sense to keep a stable veteran like Backus since his contract is so reasonable...

I'd like to see us keep Gosder like you suggested, but that may not be in the cards with our cap situation this year. With Fox waiting in the wings, Cherilus might just be too pricey. Then again maybe Mayhew values him enough to make it happen.

One thing is for sure- he's one of the few draft picks that Millen actually got right...

Can you really say that with a straight face?

Dude is "OK" in Pass pro (because Stafford lets it go so soon), but offers very Little in the run game anymore. Plus I think the dude is making like 5 million this year, that isn't low.

I can say it with a completely straight face because I'm not completely biased against the guy. I can be objective and see that he had a phenominal (sp) year in pass protection and has always been effective against the run.

Your take on the matter is virtually null and void on this board because of your long-time hatred of Backus. He could pancake every single guy he's blocking on every single play while scoring 48 TDs by himself all the while reading a book while teaching himself to play guitar and recording his debut album and you'd still be grumbling about Russel Okung.

The fact is that Backus is a damn good LT who is great in pass-pro, which is convient given that we're a pass-first, then pass some more style offense. He fits what we do and is very good at it. Given the amount of turnover our o-line is already looking at it makes sense to leave one of the best parts of it last year- the left side- alone for another season.

His cap number for 2013 is $3.5 million- very low for a starting left tackle, especially one of his stature.

Release Peterman

February 6, 2013 10:09 am

Some good Oline input from MikeD and TP2 there. Here's my take on what "may" come to pass.

First off - I think Backus stays. $5 million is not a lot for a quality starting LT in the NFL. Backus knows as well as we do that his days are winding down bit by bit so he could even restructure his contract and extend it one more year, possibly dropping his salary per year and cap hit. Who knows? But its a possibility.
Having a veteran like Backus on the roster during this oline turnover is extremely important for continuity. I could see Jeff starting still but also I could see him moving to a backup role and we could do a lot lot worse than having Backus as a backup.

Second - The Lions will need to decide what to do with Gosder Cherilous. Resign or let him hit the FA market. My money is on letting him hit the FA market. Here's why. We are a bit cap strapped at this time even with recent releases. Gosder is one of the players that was a rookie before the rookie pay scale came into effect. So he was getting paid good money off his first contract as a 1st round pick. I have not been a Cherilous fan, over the years he has seems ok at best, I admit I may have become biased on him a bit since he apparently had a very good year, but I must have missed it somehow.
So knowing all this, Gosder surely wants to make at least the same amount of money if not get a raise somewhere. Thats cap money we cant afford right now IMO. So let Gos test the FA waters and see what surfaces.
Its been said Fox is finally heathly and ready. Maybe he is the RT answer.
Nagy will be ready apparently, since they released Peterman it seems the logical assumption. Nagy can play Guard of Center.

Third is the draft - If Joeckel falls to #5 the Lions will need to make a decision, take him there (not a bad idea) or trade the spot because if Nagy falls to #5 Mayhew's phones will light up. If the right team calls that is in the right spot, then we can trade out, gain a pick or 2, and take Warmack (as long as we dont trade back to far, I think the Titans at #11 will be Warmack hunting). Or as MikeD mentioned, a player liek Barrett Jones could be sitting for us in the 2nd round. All of these are good solid safe picks IMO and would help the oline. I also think we wil lsee ONE oline player taken in the first 2 rounds. If in the first, we go defense in the second. If defense in the first, we go Oline in the second. (Hopefully Jones).

So the oline could have many new and distinct looks as possibilities.

We could see Backus (LT), Sims (LG), Raiola (C), Nagy (RG), Cherilous (RT).
This would be the least amount of change and I am doubting this due to Reiff.

We could see Backus (LT), Sims (LG), Raiola (C), Nagy (RG), Rieff (RT).
or
We could see Rieiff (LT), Sims (LG), Raiola (C), Nagy (RG), Backus (RT).
or
We could see Rieff (LT), Sims (LG), Raiola (C), Nagy (RG), Fox (RT).

But I think we may see more moves than that.
If Joeckel is taken we could see Joeckel (LT), Sims (LG), Raiola (C), Nagy (RG), Rieff (RT).
In this Backus would be a backup or possibly start for part of the season.

If we by some chance are in place to take Warmack then I think Raiola may be released. (i love to see the board happy, like todays Peterman gone day) and we could see possibly Rieff (LT), Sims (LG), Nagy (C), Warmack (RG), Fox/Backus (RT).

Or if Jones is taken....
Rieff (LT), Sims (LG), Jones (C), Nagy (RG), Fox/Backus (RT).

Looking at it I think Sims is totally safe.
Backus will be back but in what role is the question. (another option with Jeff is if the Lions can find a contender that needs a backup LT they can work a trade with).
Reiff is safe and most likely a starter at either tackle position.
Nagy looks to be ready to be a starter in the mix. (bye bye Peterman)
Fox is still a question mark.
And we have to wait and see if a young T, G, or C is taken early in the draft.

I expect a youth movement on the oline with 3 new starters at the very least. 4 if the draft falls right for us to get either Warmack or Jones. I think either of them could start day one possibly.

Dream moves for me:
Draft Joeckel at #5 and Jones at #37. (Joeckel- LT, Sims- LG, Jones- C, Nagy- RG, Reiff- RT)
or
Draft Warmack (Reiff- LT, Sims- LG, Nagy- C, Warmack-RG, Backus/Fox- RT)

I know I know...we need defense.

One other question......

Some have said that if Reiff gets moved to G they will consider it a BUST of a pick..... (I dont see this happening, but....)

Does that hold true if Reiff gets moved to G and makes 5 pro bowls or is named all pro multiple times over the next 10 years?

I dont see this move happening... but if it did and he excelled why would it be considered a BUST to have arguably one of the best G's in football?

IMO yes...while it would be great to have G of that stature for years to come. The pick was for a tackle. The Lions drafted him with intentions of playing such.
So to me the pick and where it happened would be a bust. Not the player. You usually see guys that move positions being drafted late.
IE: DT or DE moving to TE or FB...

Only problem for me is they almost all have Chef Boy-R-Dee still playing C...The past 5 years his best blocks have come after the whistle. Trask talker not a blocker.
