What about this Strategy???

February 5, 2013 7:23 pm

At the risk of being ripped for being a complete moron, I'm gonna go ahead and throw this thought process out there.  Feel free to discuss.

First, Assume Albert and Bowe are resigned and the Chefs get a trade done that acquires A. Smith or M. Flynn

So here goes.

First pick - DT Star Lotulelei......can't imagine TJ and Dorsey are both back...this guy not only replaces one of them but adds an upgrade too
Second pick - Best rated CB or WR....hard to figure how the actual draft will go but there could be a very good CB and/or WR available at this spot....I take the higher rated of the two, preferrably CB but if they right guy isn't there grab a WR.
Third pick - interior line or ILB....there are a few OG that I've seen that look pretty good that could fall to the third round and same goes for ILB's....the caveat here is that they still have a third round pick after the trade for the above mentioned QB.

Fourth pick and beyond is really throwing darts so I look to add depth at S, CB, ILB, and WR...probably have to consider QB too if there is one available although I would hope, IN THE SHORT TERM, Cassel or Quinn can fill in as the clipboard holder until next year when the QB crop is hopefully better.  Each round is hard to say for sure because I'd probably take the best player available out of the positions which is anyones guess.

Fifth Round Sean Renfree, Duke QB,  has the arm...can make the throws...and plays in a pro-set.  I like your thoughts on this...a veteran QB...try to fill the holes.

Thanks Budahmon,

It's by no means perfect.  In a perfect world there would be an Andrew Luck or RGIII sitting there for the Chefs at #1.  One of the tough things for me is that I like the potential I've seen in Mike Glennon.  If he were there at the top of the second, it'd be hard for me to pass on him but it would also be hard to take him if I just made a trade to get Smith or Flynn.

For me with the #1 overall pick, I gotta get a guy that (basically) is gonna be a cornerstone.  Of course there are no locks but there are some guys that are rated as having a better chance of doing that than others.  Based on what we've heard Joeckel is out if Albert resigns; if he doesn't then my #1 pick obviously shifts to LT.

i think its a lock that either  flynn or smith a chief this yr, my guess it will be smith. if that happens there no way we take a qb with the first pick. I would trade back if i could get more picks then work my way back up in the second for a qb. Now some of you are sold on Geno Smith  as the guy, I'm not I think there about 5 qb's that are of equal value, that why i have no problem working back up in the draft if I can make a trade at number1.

I think most of us agree it'd be nice to trade down for more picks but I really didn't explore that for the purposes of this because quite frankly it's too reliant on a willing trade partner.  Maybe there is a team out there that gets really high on a guy and wants to move up to guarantee they get him but in a pretty "average" draft class overall, it's hard to see anyone wanting to do that.

This thing is pretty darn wide open and I can see a number of trails to travel.  I chose the one above given what I know now, but of course that will change I'm sure.

I'm right there with you on your draft stratagy.

A lot is going to depend on Brandon Albert and Dwayne Bowe.  Everything comming out in the media about Brandon Albert is scaring me.  Now it is out there that he wants to be paid like a top 5 LT.  I'd like to keep Albert around and address another position but the gap of what Joekel would make and what Albert is wanting is going to be huge.

And I would be cool with Alex Smith but I in NO way want Matt Flynn.  He has little playing time and looked horrible IMO in preseason with the Seahawks.

Go Chiefs!!!

Given the assumptions you laid out the plan is a valid one.  However, I would go with either Milner or Warmick over Star.  I think both of those players, especially Warmick are better locks that fill bigger needs.  Do we need DL help?  Yes.  However, I think Poe is going to be ok and I think we can get 1 free agent to fill one DE spot while also drafting a DL a little bit later to add to the competition on the roster we currently have.

Why Warmick over Milner & Star?  While I think Milner is going to be a star the CB spot is deep this year (as is the DL).  Star seems to be fantastic on paper but, like Poe, Dorsey, and Tyson Jackson, he is a run stuffer only.  We don't need yet another run stuffing option.  We need to change our scheme and allow our front 3 to blitz a little more often.  Guard on the other hand is not as deep with only a few players being worth early selections.  Warmick by far is the best of the bunch and he forces either Hudson or Allen to step it up/keep performing or forces one of the two options to be the starting center while holding down the RG or LG spot.

Trading down would be the best scenario no matter what happens.  I wouldn't be opposed to taking Geno either even with Alex on the roster as long as Andy is convinced he can be a franchise QB.  But, if not Geno, Warmick ensures our O-Line can protect any QB that we start.

And another thought is the possibility that, if Kevin Kolb gets cut, the Chiefs grab him for backup money.

I don't like the idea of getting another guy in the mold of T Jax and Poe.  We already have enough of these 3-4 slug lineman.  I think we restructure T-Jax, cut Dorsey, and look in free agency for our third starter.  Poe will be fine.

I agree with you on bringing back Albert and Bowe, but only if the money makes sense.  If it doesn't, draft Joekyl to replace Albert and then sign Jennings in lieu of Bowe.  I personally think Joekyl and Jennings are better players anyways, and without a doubt better character guys.

If we can Bowe and Albert signed under a reasonable contract, then I prefer to go after one of the elite pass rushers of this draft.  If Jarvis Jones' medical issues check out fine, then I believe he is the guy.

Agree with 90% of A-Nation's post with the following exeptions:

1)  I don't see Albert as being a poor character guy
2)  I think Jarvis Jones is too big of a risk (even bigger of a risk than Geno) and feel that the 4th ILB position is something that can be filled in the later rounds or via free agency.  Of course, if the right player is a 4th ILB with other players being mediocre there's nothing wrong with making the pick after round 1.

I like it Jayhawk. I think Star Lotulelei is not out of the question of being picked 1st overall, then again no one is out of the question yet. No one even knows who the BPA is yet. I don't think its Joeckel personally.

About your 2nd round pick, you hit it right on the head IMO. WR will be there, as will a CB. As I've said all along I'd love it to be Tavon Austin if he is there. CB wise maybe Desmond Trufant will be there.

I would also agree with your 3rd rounder prefer a ILB and hit on it like Seattle did with Bobby Wagner.

4-7 is depth and special teamers, but QB could def be thrown in there. I like it.

Only thing is, we just have to hit on the players we draft.

"Cassel or Quinn can fill in as the clipboard holder until next year when the QB crop is hopefully better. "

do you not remember a plane flying a banner above the stadium to bench Cassel and some fans cheering for him being replaced due to injury? There is virtually ZERO chance that Matt Cassel will be back in KC next year. The fans have all but burned effigies of him in their disdain. His contract is too big and they will likely release him to get out of it and to get free of him.

I like tha pass rusher from Georgia better than Star. In fact I would venture that Jarvis Jones is the best player in this draft and we should not hesitate to take him.

I am still hoping that Matt Barkley is our starter next season. I would not give a single draft pick up for Alex Smith or Matt Flynn. Screw that. Pick the best player on the board and sort them out later. 2-14 teams dont have anybody that should be secure in their job.

I like Jarvis Jones too but to me he is more of an edge rusher type guy.  In my view the biggest problem on the line is not pressure from outside but push up the middle which is why I went with Star.  JJ would be a fine pick but I think Star does a little more of what the Chefs are missing right now.

Indy is the perfect example of what a change at QB can do for a team.  Now, yes, they probably over achieved some this year, and no, there is no Luck for the Chefs to pick, but I really do think a Barkley or Smith or Glennon, or a few others could come in to KC and have success given that there really is some talent.

I guess it just boils down to this; it's hard to get really excited about any of the QB options this year.

********

Two, I do agree with your sentiments about Cassel.....I just don't see them unloading both he and Quinn at the same time and one would think Cassel and his ridiculous contract will be the one to go.

I'd be ok with that.  They need to make signing Albert a priority.  Bowe, not so much.  You can find a guy in the 6th round who will drop passes just as effectively at a tenth the price.  I also wouldn't mind them trading down and getting Chance Warmack.

What if we do the following

1.  franchise albert and then  do the following trade:

Cards get:  Albert, and a 4rd rounder this year
Chiefs get:  Kolb, the Cards 2nd round pick this year, 3rd rounder next year

2.  Draft big Luke #1 then use one of our #2's on a qb and another on a WR/CB.

Now we get more picks with a similar lineup of players that we would be getting if we didn't do this deal.

I would love that deal Lockdown.  Do you think a team would part with a 2nd rounder for a franchised Albert?  A long term deal would need to be agreed upon with Albert and the Cards for that deal to go through.

Dumb.

We are not in need of another "pass rusher".

Especially that over-rated moron.

He absolutely got his azz kicked by Bama's O-line and ran over by Lacy a few times also.

Don't want him.

Our defense will be good enough if we can get some points on the board.
