Looks like Rob Ryan is our guy......

February 5, 2013 9:41 pm

Just read it per Adam Schefter.  We're gonna interview the DC from Georgia on Thursday I believe (can't remember his name) and then interview Ryan on Friday.  But it sounds like we're ready to make Rob the guy.  If he does in fact become our DC, I just hope the circus doesn't come along with it.  Dallas was 19th in total defense last season ranking 19th against the pass and 22nd against the run so this got Gary Gibbs written all over it.  I'm still gonna try and stay as positive as possible though.

In Rex 2.0's defense, he did have to deal with a crap ton of injuries. Jay Ratliff being chief among them.

That being said, we don't have a DeMarcus Ware, Anthony Spencer, or a Ratliff on this roster to make that 3-4 sparkle, and I don't particularly like the family the guy comes from. They are loud mouths.

I think he's one of those coaches who looks good with talent to lead, but can't coach up 2nd tier guys like we have.

I didn't really like it at first cause he brings the circus and I do think he's overrated.  I mean he didn't last in Oakland, Cleveland,or Dallas.  What makes me think it'll be any different here ?  But I'm trying to look at it from a positive side.  82, you mentioned Anthony Spencer and he is a FA so maybe the hiring will help lure him to come and play here.  How bout Ed Reed ?  He played for Rob's brother Rex, and I thinking the 2 brothers run a similar style 3-4 so that is something to think about also.  My biggest question is, is Rob Ryan a players coach ?  Do guys like to play for him and will they lay it on the line for him ?  Cause I know we had a few dudes that hated Spags.

I hear what you guys are saying, but I must iterate. Remember Sean Payton is back which should put our offense back on top overall with no only the passing game but also the running game which means top 1-3 passing & top 5-10 rushing attack & top 1-5 scoring offense. So, I believe with this as most experts have been saying for like 5 years now that the Saints only need a "middle of the road" defense in order to go deep in the playoffs. We are most likely not going to field a top 10 or even 15 defense in the first year of implimenting a 3-4 scheme with limited defensive talent suited for 4-3. I mean in 2014 I'm sure we'll see improvement & maybe even drastic improvement with the defense after having a year in the 3-4 scheme. At this point I'm hoping for Crennell, but I won't be totally disappointed in Ryan if all else fails. It's prime time pickings for the D coordinators who specialize in the 3-4 right now. I'm excited about this along! So, if we're just average on defense & can get key stops/some 3 and outs @ key moments/turnovers we should be competitive enough to get back to the playoffs this season alone. I mean we were 7-9 withouth our freakin Head Coach & still produced the #1 Passing Attack & werw a top 5 scoring team. I CHALLENGE ANY NFL TEAM TO ACCOMPLISH THOSE FEATS without their coach!!! Who Dat!!!

Yeah I was kinda hoping for Crennell also but from what I read, we never even contacted him for an interview.  We showed absolutely no interest in him for a job.  It was pretty much all speculation.  One of my problems too is that Ryan has been fired from his last 2 jobs (not sure about Oakland).  I like how he has a very fired up attitude on the sideline though.  The camera was on him more than it was on Jason Garrett during Cowboys games.  The casual football fan would've thought Rob Ryan was their head coach.  I just hope Ryan can come here and get this defensive unit to generate a whole lot more turnovers than Dallas did last season cause I believe they were the worst in the league in that department.

I've been reading a bit on Rob Ryan and I like what I read. He has success everywhere he goes (except the Browns with Eric Mangini) even with the Cowboys this last season.  Like I said in an earlier post, they must have fired Ryan because he throws too many picks.

He was a stud D coach in college, entered the NFL with the Cardinals in the mid 90's and gave them a top 3 D. Went back to college and made a top 10 National defense at Oklahoma State.  Then the Patriots and a top ranked defense, then the Raiders, under Al (let me touch and wreck this system) Davis and actually did pretty good.

Then the bounce started... The Oakland carrousel of coaches included him... The Browns carrousel of coaches included him too... The Cowboys continuous lack of upper management in Jerry (let me touch and wreck this Al Davis Jr. system) Jones bounced him out when in all actuality, the Cowboys defense was pretty good through the first 3 quarters this season.

In 2011 the Cowboys (under Ryan) were 14th in yards allowed and 16th in points allowed.
In 2012 the Cowboys (under Ryan) were 14th in yards allowed and 23rd in points allowed.
So if you look at the Cowboys scoring offense, it's pretty obvious that opposing offenses are going to put up points because they have to!

Either way, 14th and 16th, or even 23rd is WAY better than 31st & 32nd.

I too would prefer Crennel. I just think he has a different approach and his players love him out of sheer respect. With Gregg Williams it was because he was aggresive, Spags was maybe to cerebral in shceme for his own good. But I agree with Iowa, the thing to look at with Ryan is that in has last 2 stops there was no coaching stability. Oakland and Dallas. My favorite joke to Dallas fans is " What do you call Jerry Jones in 10 years?   Al Davis" ( I know, hilarious right?) But it makes sense, owners can be passionate about their teams, but at some point if you keep failing, maybe you need to take a step back and let the people who do it for an actual living do it. I'm convinced that until he steps down as GM, Dallas won't have much sucess. I mean how do you not win a playoff game with 13 probowlers on a team?

Now getting back on track, Ryan hasn't had a stable HC in his stints in the NFL, I mean Mangini, Jackson, and Garrett. Now of those guys do it like SP and just like Williams, Ryan won't overshadow Payton, that in itself will make a difference, and because he's aggressive and likes to attack, I think the players will take to that real easy.

Ya I agree cause what defensive player doesn't like to play an attacking style ?  Another concern of mine is we're going though DC's like Betty White is going through birthdays and we need stability.  I wonder how much we save against the cap if we release Harper, Vilma, Smith, Henderson and let Ellis go ?

The rough cap numbers are;
Harper       $6,250,000
Vilma         $6,600,000
Smith         $7,312,500
Henderson  $3,525,000  I think is a free agentEllis            $7,757,000  I think is a free agent
Total         $31,444,500

Asside from the free agents, we're still at $20,162,500 for Harper, Vilma, and Smith

Yeah I knew Ellis was a FA, as is Bushrod.  Jermon is the one I would rather keep.  That's nuts 7 million for Will Smith.  Even Harper for 6 million is crazy.  Henderson definetly has to go.  Ed Reed, Cary Williams, Anthony Spencer, Paul Kruger, Randy Starks, and Sean Smith are all guys that jump out at me to help and fit in this new 3-4 scheme.  But that's if we cut ties with some or all of these dudes to have the $$$.......

I like Ed Reed just as much as the next guy, but he needs to stay in Baltimore and retire after next season. He took a whack on the knee in the Super bowl and who knows where that's going, but he's 34 and about done.

Cary Williams - YES!! He'll command some $$$ though.
Anthony Spencer - Yes if we get Ryan. Obviously he had a great year, his first one. He's got 2 good years left at 29 years old. Maybe more if he's an odd ball.
Paul Kruger - Sure. Don't know much about him, so he'd likely be a good fit :)  Could start to play big as he's seasoned now.
Randy Starks - Maybe. Very durable, but also long in the tooth at 29-30. He's due for a change.
Sean Smith - Yes. He's due to turn it on. He's young and has played pretty well.

So what's up, Mass? You just like AFC Defenses?

I like Dashon Goldson (SF). He'd cost more than Harper, but fits the bill really well.

How's that for a deep list on my part?

I also like Dashon Goldson a lot as well.  That kid has come a long way.  He used to struggle mightily earlier in his career, but is now an elite player who will knock your block off.  But I read somewhere that he and Delanie Walker (another FA I wouldn't mind having to pair up with Graham) were San Fran's top 2 priorities this offseason.  I also like the idea of maybe stealing William Moore or Brent Grimes away from ATL like we did Lofton.  But I see a lot of Roman Harper in Moore and that might be like having the same guy.  Brent Grimes on the other hand missed the entire season with an injury that I can't even remember what it was, but that kid is a supreme physical athlete that is tremendously gifted.  Here's another NFC guy for ya Mid Iowa, how do you feel about Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie ?

I know I'd be estatic if we had Dominique Rogers-Cromartie in our Secondary, but I haven't heard anything on him being a free agent in 2013.  I remember when the Eagles got him from the Cards recently.  Right now I think its time to clean house defensively & start fresh.  I'm tired of 1st round drafts on the defensive side of the ball that command money but produce little.

I'm pretty sure DRC is a FA unless the Eagles gave him an extension.  I know Nnamdi Asomugha is most likely go nna get released.  He needs a fresh start and should go to a team that plays mostly man to man cause that's where he excels.

I Like DRC, and he's a free agent.  I don't think he is a good mental fit for the Eagles, and I don't think he's worth "big" money, but good money, and could be a fun compliment to Rob Ryan's attitude of "go get physical"

The thing I like most is his height.  6'2" and can run, jump, and has good hips, and watches the ball.  I think with the right coaching he could be a dominate force.  If you look at his stats, I'd say the lack of stats speaks volumes... QB's avoid him if they can.

How about Victor Butler? OLB with the Cowboys. He's a free agent, good size at 6'2" 245, and is a free agent. He's only 25 years old and when he's in, he makes plays.  You likely haven't heard much of him because he's behind Anthony Spencer and DeMarcus Ware on the depth chart.  Kinda like Tom Brady behind Drew Bledsoe

Another possible Cowboy would be Mike Jenkins.

Ya I have a feeling that if we are gonna sign some FA's, we're gonna sign at least one away from Dallas cause players usually follow coaches especially if they like each other.  I don't really know too much about Butler, but I'm all for a young kid that excels when he has the opportunity.  And I was just reading about Jenkins like literaly 5 minutes ago, and it said that he was as good as gone.  He's a solid CB who probably needs a fresh start and when he was drafted I believe he was the 1st CB taken ahead of the likes of Talib, Cason, McKelvin, and I believe DRC might have been in that draft class as well.

Correction DRC and McKelvin were drafted before Jenkins and Brandon Flowers and our favorite CB Tracy Porter were drafted after Jenkins all in the same draft.
