Seems now whenever our defense is brought up it is always referred to (by coaches, media, etc) as a multi-front, attacking defense. The coaches/management seem like they are afraid to simply call it a 3-4 (and the media has followed suit).
Are they really this worried about alleviating possible fan concern over the switch to the 3-4? I have to assume the Steelers are not in a 3-4 on every snap, but don't feel the need to refer to themselves as a multi-front defense. If you ask, they'll say they run the 3-4.
it is a passing league now . the base defense is the knickle no matter what front you decide to use . i can see them switching between a 4 man & a 3 man front .
i have been hoping for a hybrid defense now for 4 years . it sounds like my wish has come true . the Browns need help in the back end no matter what front they run . pass rushing ends & upgrades at LB are also a must .
i have been a die hard since 67 ..past time to turn this thing around
I, for one, find it refershing that the coaching staff is calling it what is instead of calling it want some wants to hear. Look around the league at the current teams labeled as a 3-4 and ask their fans how often do they really play a 4-3? The good teams switch between a 3-4 and 4-3 allignment the entire game depending on how the offense lines up and the down a nd distance.
The REALLY good ones switch back and forth without changing personnel.

Not that big of an issue, but I think they ARE calling it what people want to hear. They don't want to call it a 3-4 because they think the fans believe our personnel is better suited to a 4-3 (and it probably is as of now). They don't want us to believe they are just another group of coaches who try to make players fit a system as opposed to the other way around.
As mentioned, every team does not run the same allignment on each play. They all switch it up, even those who aren't afraid to say they run a 3-4.
Lym and Bluez pretty much covered it all....The 3-4 vs. 4-3 arguement is outdated. As bluez said, the base package these days is the nickel. Teams throw about 60% of the time, so it's really dictated by the offense....

I hear ya, topdawg, but if you ask Tomlin what defense he runs, he'll tell you the 3-4.
