Similarites between 2000 and 2012 Ravens

February 6, 2013 5:23 pm

Anybody who has watched can see that these 2 teams were very different teams.  One was totally dominated by defense while the other was much more balanced and let the offense carry the team while the defense was bend but don't break.

However here is a list of some of the similarities of the 2 teams.  Feel free to add to the list:

- split games with the Steelers with the away team winning both games

- swept the Browns

- beat the Cowboys, Chargers, and Giants (if you count the Supebowl)

- lost to the Redskins (I hope that's not a neccessary trend for winning the Superbowl)

- only 2 division losses (4-2 this year, 8-2 in 2000)

- 6-2 at home

- had a 3 game losing streak

- had a player with a tragic death in the family, come back and have a career day (Torrey Smith this year, in 2000 Jermaine Lewis had a stillborn son and came back to return 2 punts for TDs)

- made a major change to an offensive position (OC change this year, QB change in 2000)

- beat the Broncos in the playoffs

- were the #4 seed (although div. champion this year, wild card in 2000)

- beat the #5 seed at home, and went on the road to beat the #1 and #2 seeds.

- lost a regular season home game to the team they beat on the road in the divisional round of the playoffs (Broncos this year, Titans in 2000, although they did beat the Titans in Tennessee in the regular season too)

- returned a kickoff for a touchdown in the Superbowl

- scored 34 points in the Superbowl

- Ray Lewis was on the team

- and most importantly, WON THE SUPERBOWL

A real shame about Jermaine Lewis, think he is in prison or on the way to prison nowadays. Remember seeing an article on the Sun about him during the season.

A ton of similarities for sure though. Kinda scary if you think about it.

2 biggest differences to me were Flacco instead of Dilfer and HArbaugh instead of Billick.

Prior to this season, I actually think 2000 was the last time we lost to the Redskins.  Maybe they should throw that game in 2016 Laughing

I was at that loss in 2000 against the Skins, Banks through an interception before the half, and I believe Stephen Davis had one decent run that ended up as a TD.  That game was the beginning of our three game slide.

Alsoo both teams were 10-6 as well heading into the play-offs and both the 2000 and 2012 teams had 5 players selected for the Pro-Bowl.

I was looking at these earlier before the SB, but never got around to posting a full one here.  Good work BaGee.

Sorry to tell you but both of those stats are wrong.  The 2000 team went 12-4.  And the 2012 team had 6 pro bowl selections: Rice, Leach, Yanda, Ngata, Reed, and J. Jones.  I'm not sure how many made the 2000 Pro-Bowl so they still could have the same amount if you were wrong about that team having 5.

I don't want to know we can't win a Superbowl for 4 more years.  Maybe preseason games count.  We can just throw all the preseason games to Washington since they don't matter anyway.

You know I've been holding that 10-6 record for 2000 in my head for years now.  I'm not sure what the hell made me think that.  Senility maybe.

The 2000 team did have 5 selected to the AFC the Pro Bowl team - Ray Lewis, Rod Woodson, Jon Ogden, Michael McCrary, and Peter Boulware.

One simalrity I've thought of throughout the season is the strong running games and how similar in style and play the veteren Ray Rice and rookie Benard Pierce are to how the veteren Priest Holmes and rookie Jamaal Lewis were.
