So now who's your #1 seeds?

February 7, 2013 9:08 am

I'd just like to point out that several people were dropping Louisville as a contender when they had their 3 game skid against 3 solid teams in the BE in Cuse by 2, Nova in a close one and Gtown by 2. None were blowouts like the KU or UF games. Watch Louisville climb right back into the discussion as the other big boys continue to get knocked down.

Kansas and Florida both suffered losses to teams that aren't all that good...but it doesn't mean they're soft or they aren't that good themselves. Sometimes it takes eating a little humble pie to get you back on track. I still think Louisville, Kansas and Florida could make a stake for a #1 seed but any more loses to the likes of Arkansas, TCU or Nova could knock you right down to a #2 or #3 seed in a heart beat. I'm throwing out the earlier losses for each team because they were all against quality opponents early in the year. But the most recent losses have more of an impact on the discussion since you should be more prepared at this stage of the season IMO.

Here's the down and dirty of KU, UF and UofL's worse losses thus far in case you want an argument for who is more deserving of a higher seed to this point:

KU loss to TCU and what it means: TCU BPI Rank=225, SOS=136 & RPI=203

UF loss to Arkansas and what it means: ARK BPI Rank=68, SOS=57 & RPI=77

UofL loss to Nova and what it means: Nova BPI Rank=69, SOS=30 & RPI=65

With this as your berometer, who do you think is the better team? All 3 games were road games so it's a fair assessment. All 3 teams are close in all the rankings including RPI abd BPI but I believe KU will take a big hit after last night's loss.

Tell me what you think??

Michigan State has a better resume of all those teams. If they stay neck and neck with these three teams we may see a similar situation to a few years ago when the Big East got three #1 seeds. If the tourney started right now, I think the committee would like Michigan State over Kansas, Florida, and Louisville

At this point it looks pretty clear that Indiana and Michigan are the top two teams.  The other one seeds are up in the air.  Possibly Arizona and Miami?

What are the best road wins for each of these teams?

I'm sticking with this as mine and I hold to it.

Indiana
Louisville
Michigan
Florida

Kansas may make a comeback and overtake Michigan if Michigan slips up... and I think that's possible.

Duke has a beef only based on their early season victories but I think they suffer some more in the ACC.

Michigan St. could jump in there if they overtake Indiana or Michigan in conference play.

Florida better not drop another game to any of the other SEC teams because the SEC is flat out turable.

Louisville has to keep up the pace and win out in the BE but it is very possible. Just hate the trap game this weekend at ND.

Syracuse could jump back in there if they run the BE table too but I think UofL will even the score in the rematch.

Indiana better not get cocky. The BIG is tough this year and there are some interchangable teams at the top right now.

Gonzaga? They have two (2) chances at a #1 seed , slim and none and slim left on the noon stage.

I like Indiana and Michigan.  If Miami beats Duke again; then they are in.  It can't be both.  Florida only has one game remaining that should be a problem;  Kentucky in Lexington; last game of the season. If Arizona wins out; they are in.  Picks or better yet, GUESSES:  Indiana, Michigan, Miami, Arizona.

Right now?  Well, right now is hard to call four 1 seeds.  As shaken up as the polls have been this year, I believe conference tournaments will dictate 1 seeds.
I believe Michigan and Indiana (barring any collapse) are solidly 1 seeds.
If Louisville doesn't drop any more silly games, and wins the Big East Tournament... then they're a 1 seed.
Duke can grab a 1 seed if they win out the regular season and at least make it to the conference title game.
Miami can grab a 1 seed if they win out the regular season and win the ACC Tournament.
Florida could probably get a 1 seed with help from Duke/Kansas losing any more games, as long as the Gators don't lose any games to teams not named Kentucky and they're not bounced early in the SEC Tournament.
Gonzaga can grab a 1 seed if the teams listed above shoot themselves in the foot.
Kansas needs to win out, they need help from Duke/Florida, and they need to win the Big 12 Tournament.
Michigan State is a darkhorse, I believe.  I think they only get a 1 seed if they win the rest of their regular season (remaining regular season games:  Michigan twice, Indiana, and at Ohio State).  If they win those four games, they'd be looking at a 1 seed.

Crazy stuff.  Should be an interesting February, and an amazing March.

Personally I'd take a healthy Duke team any day over Indiana and Michigan but they would also be on my one seed line. The fourth spot is kind of up in the air and it wouldn't shock me to see a number of teams there. Right now I'd go with Arizona but teams like Kansas, Louisville, Florida and even Miami are all capable of being there at the end.

Gonzaga isn't a 1 seed, they spend the conference season playing San Diego, Pepperdine, BYU, etc. they can win out and still be a 4 or 5 to me at best.

But the tourney doesn't start right now. State will get beat my UM Tuesday night, Indiana. UM again and maybe even Ohio State. State will also lose again in the B1G tourney.

They will be seeded somewhere around 6 or 7.

We'll do alright. But this UNC team isn't as good as past teams. We shall see.

I think that's a bit of a stretch.  Even if they do lose to Michigan twice, IU, and OSU... those are quality losses.  As long as those are the only four losses outside of the Big Ten Tournament, I think MSU will end up at a 4 seed.  Don't be surprised if MSU splits though, maybe pulls out a win against IU and beats Michigan in East Lansing.

I've learned never to undersell Mr. Izzo.
