So the Super Bowl is over (am I going to get charged for not calling it the "big game"?) and I am already missing football.  The boards are dead even though Catfan tried to spice it up.  So here is something else we can argue over.  With the expansion of the sports talk radio market here in the valley I thought it would be interesting to get your opinion on who you enjoy listening to the most.

I know this may not apply to some of you since you may not be able to listen to talk radio during the work day, but feel free to chime in if you do. For the sake of argument we will assume we may not all "enjoy" Caves & Prater, at least we like the local talk.  Therefore we will leave them out of the poll.

If I forget anyone you can certainly write them in.  Also, I think we should remember this is "sports talk" and not "political talk".  JMHO.

I like Mike & Mike, but Jim Rome is the only that I can catch during the day due to work.  I don't like everything that Rome does, but overall I do like his program, so I'll vote there.

Not a fan of Rome.  At all.

Unfortunately, as a middle school teacher, I don't get a chance to hear most of the folks listed anymore.  I did back in my previous life in the Air Force.  Mike & Mike is on here in the mornings and they aren't too bad.

Gottlieb was a long time staple here in OKC on the radio (OSU grad) and I always liked him locally.  (That's where my vote went.)

You left off my favorite, Paul Feinbaum.  His program left me howling in laughter day after day, where he found those stereotypical redneck callers was an art form.  Now that he is off of Sirius College, I don't know how to find him.

Can anyone tell me where he is now?

I'm a little surprised Mike & Mike are as popular as they are.  As I stated in another thread I feel they are a bit more of the "wacky morning show" than sports show.  But then, it is the early morning program so it fits.

Rome used to be much better than he is now.  He is quite the corporate guy now.  Before he was just darn funny and NO ONE was off limits.  "The rat family", "the left turn circuit", ect....so funny.  I do think he does some of the best interviews I have heard on the radio.

I lean a bit toward Jay Mohr during the same timeframe.  He needs some polish, but I do enjoy much (not all) of his humor.

BA,

Castle AFB, CA (now closed) - training
Barksdale AFB, Louisiana
Grand Forks AFB, North Dakota
Castle AFB, CA
Carswell AFB, TX (now closed)
Tinker AFB, OK (where I retired in 2006)

I joined the Air Force to see the world then chose a job with only one overseas base, which I never got to go to.  My second job had two overseas bases but my name never got called.  So...I got a lot of the South, West Coast and Great Plains.

SA...

Never outside the US huh?  Interesting.

For my time in the AF...

Lackland (Basic)
Biloxi, Miss (Tech)
Offutt, Neb (SAC - 1 year)
Mildenhall, England (SAC - 11 years).

England was fun.  Pulled many TDY's all over Europe and the Middle East.  Desert Shield and Storm vet, but no where near Kuwait as I was recon flying out of Tiaf or Sudaa Bay (Crete).   A 3 month TDY in Athens was interesting as we spent the entire time under lockdown due to a very active November 17 terrorist cell at that time.  But other than that, 13 years of very normal service.

BA, the second half of my career I was an AWACer here at Tinker so I spent tons of time across a pond of some sort.  The Azores, Mildenhall (one of my all time favorite bases, by the way), Saudi, Turkey, Germany, Italy, Iceland, etc..  Some for a day or two, some for months.  Did the Desert Storm thing at Jedda, Saudi Arabia and then tons of Northern and Southern Watch after.

What did you fly? RCs?  I did 12 years in B-52G/H, 14 in AWACS/First Sergeant (I was a full time fill-in First Sergeant for about two years before I became a real Shirt.)

So you were an AWACs guy.  Way cool!  And a First Sergeant as well.  Can't picture you as a hardass, but aren't all First Sergeants Hardasses?!?!   Tongue out

Yes, my planes were the RC135's.  Hence my 11 years at Mildenhall, where we constantly had at least 3 RC's ready for sorties.  I loved Mildenhall as well.  Good location, good people!  My only regret about my AF time was not sticking it out and retiring.  I RIF'd in 92.  BUT, with the RIF I did get the GI Bill, which put me through college at BSU and set me up in a career I absolutely love!

I was only a hardass when necessary, which fortunately was not very often.  I was/am a people person and that's how I approached the job.

I was a gunner on B-52s and in 1991 they fired us all at with the end of the Cold War and the Gulf War.  So I was in a prime position to take the money and run when the RIF happened.  But I ended up getting a shot at AWACS and took it.  Grounded in 2000 for old B-52 injuries and that's how I transitioned to Shirt.

I got to take a tour of the RCs a couple of times.  It always looked like a lot of fun AND had the added benefit of overseas.

GI Bill rocks.  I never qualified (didn't sign up for VEAP) until the post-9/11 Bill came along.  I start my Masters in a week and a half, thanks to the GI Bill.

Yep...   VEAP for me during my active duty.  VEAP sucked!  One of the bene's of the RIF in '91 was the GI Bill.  That was enough to convince me to take the RIF.  The GI Bill was what got me through college while supporting a family.

I've contemplated starting on my Masters.  But at this stage it would be just for show as it wouldn't really assist me in upward career progression.  Maybe when I retire and I don't have anything else to do!   Laughing

As a teacher, a Masters gets me a tiny bit more pay (not enough to make it worth it) but it opens up a few career paths.  I've been teaching since 2007 and am just now getting around to it.  In reality, I don't need it but since I have the Bill and it will do some things for me...

I gave my reason for picking Gottlieb.  He was on the radio here for quite some time.  Always liked him as a local broadcaster.

My daily dose of sports talk:

Dan Patrick/Mike & Mike (usually switch according to commercials or topics)

Jay Mohr/Jim Rome (usually listen to Jay now with a little Rome sprinkled in)

Gottlieb/SVP & Russillo (this time of year Gottlieb can talk TOO much NBA)

Caves & Prater/BOB (yeah, music is sometimes preferable this time of year)

Now keep in mind I don't get to listen to the entirety of each show (even I can't take that much sports talk).  I am in and out of the shop/vehicles so listen sporadically.
