Uhhh, I Don't Think So, Freeman

February 8, 2013 1:40 pm

I pretty much disagree with everything Freeman wrote about the 2014 SB.

First point. He says it's all about the money for having the SB in NY. Well, yeah it is. But the primary reason that only warm weather cities got SB's in the first place was because of all the extra money that is generated by the events in a warm weather city. The SB is a spectacle more than it is about the actual game anymore. How many NFL fans actually give two turds about the halftime show or all this other goofy stuff that is done?

Second point. He says that football isn't meant to be played in the cold. Well, it's not exactly meant to be played in the cold, but it certainly is a part of it. Otherwise, why else is football played in the Fall and Winter?

Third point. He says cold weather diminishes the level of play. Well, I guess he's never enjoyed any playoff games, or particularly any conference championship games, which are played in cold weather all the time. There doesn't seem to be any issue there.

Last point. He doesn't mention it, but I find it extremely hypocritical that people blast Goodell for making it a pansy league, but now that he moves the SB into the cold weather where real men play, then all of a sudden it's not fair because the players and fans might be a little cold.

I bet this idiot, Freeman, also believes that the highdive event at the Olympics wasn't meant to be done with water in the pool either?

It's still almost a year away, and he's already called it a failure. Who knows, maybe it'll turn out to be the best. Of course, New Jersey can't screw it up any worse than N'awlins did.

Good point Scuba. Anyone who has criticized the league for giving N.Y. a superbowl is just plain missing the point of football. They built an amazing new stadium, they are a team in the National Football League, and they went through the proper channels to get the rights for the SB. What's the issue? And I am not one of Goodell's major critics for the "protecting of players" movement, but I do enjoy some good old fashioned "I'm gonna hit you harder than you hit me, in the cold if necessary" football. I like the teams that don't forget to run and play smashmouth D. That's just good football.

I'm excited for the N.Y. Superbowl. Might consider buying tickets. I'd personally go to one there before I'd go to one in say Arizona, just because N.Y. is an awesome city. But anyway, you're right, Freeman must have been trying to make up a story before deadline again. Happens to all journalists on occasion.

Warm weather states are just better in general.

I don't really see any warm weather states getting 38 inches of snow during the month of the Super Bowl.

Nobdoy wants to drive on snow covered, slippery roads where you can't see any of the pavement markings on their way to the Super Bowl. Heck, if this storm hit a week ago and the Super Bowl was in New Jersey this year, they would have had to postpone it. I'm sure the fans would LOVE a postponed Super Bowl.

The Super Bowl is supposed to be place where the fans and player can enjoy themselves before and after the game. Doing it in a climate that regularly receives arctic cold fronts, winter storms, whipping winds, and a city that currently has eroded and destroyed beaches from a hurricane isn't the place to hold a Super Bowl.

The SB should rotate between Miami, New Orleans, San Diego and Las Vegas. No other city should be allowed to host the SB.

i lived in warm weather states all my life (mississippi, florida, california) and even i don't agree with this idiot argument. football is meant to be played outside, regardless of the weather.

domes should be banned, not cold weather games!

Freeman, you KNOW your opinion is idiotic when the board's new dumbest poster (title taken from Tool24) Tikis-Barber, can find the holes in it.

While Freeman is an idiot, starting your counterargument off like this isn't the brightest approach either.

PigBilly

You bring up Vegas. How cool would that be. Right now I think that they dont have a venue big enough for a SB. They could build one with no problem. Plenty of money floating around. But I think the biggest problems are the state laws. I dont believe the casinos can take bets on any sporting events in the state of Nevada. Anyone on from there know about this than I do ??

Except Freeman doesn't account for warm weather cities being about money. The reality is that the whole SB event is about making money. I don't deny that NYC is about the money, but so is every SB event.

If it wasn't about the money, then why do we have 30 second commercial slots selling for 4M dollars or weeklong events or ridiculous halftime and pregame concerts? Stuff like that is going to happen regardless of where the SB is played.
