Paterno's: Stay under the rock youve been at!

So is the captain of the Titantic not responsible for the ship hitting the iceberg?
No, not really. He had no reason to believe his navigator wouldn't be able to steer well clear of it.

Geneh;  the "navigator" had been dismissed 2 years earlier.  You seem to forget that Joe told Sandusky he would never be head coach in 1999 and Sandusky retired in 1999.  The shower incident took place in 2001. SANDUSKY WAS NO LONGER IN JOE'S EMPLOY.  Sandusky was allowed to use the Penn State facilities in the same capacity as all Penn State retirees...and that comes un der the pervue of the Athletic Director.  The 1998 investigation was done by the police and were required to keep that confidential.  In my opinion only,  Joe found out about it and that is why he dumped Sandusky in 1999.  To the best of my knowledge, the 1998 investigation was NOT made public.  Joe was probably walking a thin line there; if he fired Sandusky for molesting children which was contrary to the results of the 1998 investigation, don't you think Sandusky would be sueing everybody? Looks to me that dumping hinm from the football program was all he could do at the time.  After the shower incident and Joe then knew Sandusky was a problem, Joe should have gone after him and at the very least insured he never set foot in the football area again.

Good point, Runeman. But Joe does have that unfortunate distinction of being the first person McQueary told about the shower incident right after it happened - in 2001.

Not good, Joe should have called the police and that is where he screwed the pooch. State law and common sense should have over ruled "the Penn State way of doing things." Joe should have called the cops so it could have been investigated right there on the spot.

From my understanding, per PA mandated reporting laws, Joe did follow the law. If McQueary or the witness doesn't go to the police, it must be the highest ranking offical in that school to decide how to handle it.

First off buckhave's obssesion with penn state is effing pathetic. I'll agree with you on the PA laws and that there are no illegal actions by joepa, but for anyone to act like the police/legal authority wouldn't have investigated or possibly prevented more harm if joepa would have reported it 10 years ago is ignorant. It's a shame joepa has taken the brunt of this situtation when there was plenty of other wrong doings(manly a bunch of higher levels trying to cover their own arse), but the way joepa handled the situation is extremely poor. Especially when the guy was considered a saint prior to this. Just my two cents.

I have to agree Geneh; that's where Joe went wrong.  that doesn't make him a criminal or part of a cover up; it just makes him a person who did not do the right thing at the right time and that, I believe, is where Joe feels he fell short when he said " I wish I had done more".  I suspect after Joe set up the appointment with McQuearry, Shultz, and Curly, Joe went back to football and either forgot about it or thought his superiors were doing the right thing.  That said,  I think most of us would have been upset to see Sandusky still using Penn State facilities after the 2001 incident and ALL those who was aware of this horrific situation should have made sure Sandusky was properly investigated and forever banned from Penn State.  There is more to learn at the trial of Curly and Shultz and we just might see Governor Corbett on the hot seat as well.  This thing is not over by a long shot.  The NCAA should have let the criminal system sort this one out as it could go all the way the the Governor's office and several people going to jail.  It's going to take years, but I suspect the folks from central Pennsylvania will do the right thing.  The NCAA acted too quickly and irresponsibly, IMO.

I agree with this 100%. I do not feel Joe engaged in a criminal act. He just failed to do the correct thing. And it cost him his job, rightfully, in my opinion.

I will let others debate on whether or not Joe's statue should have come down or his wins vacated. That's another argument and I don't really care about this incident enough to worry about those details.

Sandusky is in prison for the rest of his life so I am happy. But to tell you the truth I believe capital punishment is for more than just capital murder. I believe capital punishment should be the result of a conviction of many crimes that can be proven beyond a reasonable doubt with DNA evidence, film that has not been tampered with, etc.

I don't think Paterno has taken the brunt of the blame.  He is the biggest name involved, so attention is being paid, of course.  But Sandusky is serving a 60 year prison sentence and Curley, Schultz, and Spanier are all awaiting trial.  While it is speculated that Paterno may have faced charges as well, it's not certain he ever would have.  And while all of the above are likely spending a pretty penny on their defense, I can't imagine any of them are going to have what must be a rather costly report created specifically to declare their innocence.  And, intended or not, this Paterno Report sort of funnels the blame of inaction towards Curley and Schultz, adding more toppings to their slices of the blame.  I think due to Paterno's stature and the fact that there are so many questions (that will likely never be answered with pure clarity) around his actions that he gets discussed more in the public forum, but you can't say he's bearing the brunt of this situation.

The people who care about PSU football outside of PSU football fans is about 0%.    The people who care about PSU fixing its wrong outside of PSU football fans is about 99.9%

87% of CBS sportsline posters with a screen name containing "BucksHave" are 100% hateful trolls.   The other 13% of posters with screen name containing "BucksHave" are just trolls.

Wow! Making up random numbers/percentages is easy.    They must be true, because it's now on the internet.

No Mcreary first went to his father and a family friend who happens to be a MD. They should have gone to police. Particularly the MD who should know about being a mandated reporter.

yes you are correct.  Seems when a child is sexually assaulted in that state all those "men" run for cover.  What a sick bunch of men.

Mothers hide your children in Pa. !!!!!  Don't expect the men to protect them...they seem to think a football program is more important than the safety of young boys !

Nfl solomon,

I understand your point of view lioness, but to be honest with you, my seeming unbalanced attitude in this matter really has nothing to do with Pitt-PennState Rivalry. I pray that you never experience it, but if someone you are close to, is affected by this type of sickness whether they be family or friend, you would take it personal too.
-
To me, there is no punishment harsh enough for Penn State, nor should it EVER cease being thrown up to the PSU fans. It was because of their gloryification of the PSU football program that caused the cover up to proceed.
-
The crimes against the children were at first all on Sandusky, but because of the coverup, it is also on the University, and the "WHY" of the coverup (Big Football Uber Alles) additionally apportions blame on the fans.
-
Sure, the fans didn't know what was going on, but if they hadn't turned the PSU program into the Holy See of Football, including the Pope-ification of Joe Poo, there wouldn't have been a coverup.

truned the PSU program into the Holy See of Football.....coverup.

I have a couple of issues with this.  Every large program is on a pedestal of some sort.  PSU and Coach Paterno are no different than Bama and Sabin, Texas and Mack, LSU and Miles, SU and Boeheim, Izzo and Michigan....the list is long.  Established programs have that.

Cover-up.  When people cover up something....it is their personal indiscretion.  PSU, the alumni and the people in the local area are not at fault.  They support their team to no further extent then you do your team.  They didn't know what was happening no more than I know what is happening at SU.  For sure I shouldn't be held accountable for the SU violations.

The courts will decide if there was a coverup...and if so, someone will go to jail on account of it.

I see no reason to abuse anyone else.
