So is the captain of the Titantic not responsible for the ship hitting the iceberg? No, not really. He had no reason to believe his navigator wouldn't be able to steer well clear of it.
State law and common sense should have over ruled "the Penn State way of doing things." Joe should have called the cops so it could have been investigated right there on the spot. From my understanding, per PA mandated reporting laws, Joe did follow the law. If McQueary or the witness doesn't go to the police, it must be the highest ranking offical in that school to decide how to handle it.

Not good, Joe should have called the police and that is where he screwed the pooch. State law and common sense should have over ruled "the Penn State way of doing things." I suspect after Joe set up the appointment with McQuearry, Shultz, and Curly, Joe went back to football and either forgot about it or thought his superiors were doing the right thing. That said, I think most of us would have been upset to see Sandusky still using Penn State facilities after the 2001 incident and ALL those who was aware of this horrific situation should have made sure Sandusky was properly investigated and forever banned from Penn State. There is more to learn at the trial of Curly and Shultz and we just might see Governor Corbett on the hot seat as well. This thing is not over by a long shot. The NCAA should have let the criminal system sort this one out as it could go all the way the the Governor's office and several people going to jail. It's going to take years, but I suspect the folks from central Pennsylvania will do the right thing. The NCAA acted too quickly and irresponsibly, IMO.

I do not feel Joe engaged in a criminal act. He just failed to do the correct thing. And it cost him his job, rightfully, in my opinion.
It's a shame joepa has taken the brunt of this situtation when there was plenty of other wrong doings(manly a bunch of higher levels trying to cover their own arse), but the way joepa handled the situation is extremely poor.
I don't think Paterno has taken the brunt of the blame. He is the biggest name involved, so attention is being paid, of course. But Sandusky is serving a 60 year prison sentence and Curley, Schultz, and Spanier are all awaiting trial. While it is speculated that Paterno may have faced charges as well, it's not certain he ever would have. And while all of the above are likely spending a pretty penny on their defense, I can't imagine any of them are going to have what must be a rather costly report created specifically to declare their innocence. And, intended or not, this Paterno Report sort of funnels the blame of inaction towards Curley and Schultz, adding more toppings to their slices of the blame. I think due to Paterno's stature and the fact that there are so many questions (that will likely never be answered with pure clarity) around his actions that he gets discussed more in the public forum, but you can't say he's bearing the brunt of this situation.
The people who care about PSU football outside of PSU football fans is about 0%. The people who care about PSU fixing its wrong outside of PSU football fans is about 99.9%
Good point, Runeman. But Joe does have that unfortunate distinction of being the first person McQueary told about the shower incident right after it happened - in 2001.No Mcreary first went to his father and a family friend who happens to be a MD. They should have gone to police. Particularly the MD who should know about being a mandated reporter.
