A weight limit in the NFL?

February 10, 2013 10:59 pm

hey iron horse. Maybe you could explain exactly what kiper said and how he said it. He could have been sarcastic or used exageration. I honestly don't believe anyone could be stupid enough to think this idea could possibly work.

He said it in a serious manner, and tone. They asked him, what must the NFL be safer. And he made that subjection. What the problem I saw was, is the outliers. Guys that want to keep things as they are. They don't see what's coming down the pike, or don't want to. But there is something comind down the pike, and its on a collisuion course. The NFL gets sued every day by some former player, soon, the current players will be former players. If you think that better equipment is going to solve all....well.......Also, every time you hear former players talk about the biggest diference in today's game, they bring up how much bigger, faster, and stronger players are today. Maybe take one of those things out of the equation. But hey, Netflix was also once a stupid idea that would never work.

I ran a test, and a formula and the what not, with the this and that. And it came back that it will reduce injuries by a staggering 55.7%
The what not and the this and that. Well now that you are armed with such concrete info, you should go straight to the Commissioner, the owners and the players union. You are a joke.

First things first. If mel Kiper Jr. was this great college analyst and draft specialist you would think an NFL woul have hired him as a GM or some sort of high paying scouting consultant. the fact is that most of us can sit there and say which players have the potential to be 1st round guys and even second round guys.  Some could nail the 3rd round, and after that it is essentially a crap shoot of small school guys, big time guys with character issues, and players with injury concerns.  just because he is on TV doesnt mean he is some sort of genius.

the whole weight thing makes no sense because if you havent noticed players and the population in general is getting larger.  i wouldnt be surprised if we have 300 lb halfbacks running 4.4 40's in 10-15 years.  The game evolves because we as people are constantly evolving.  A weight limit doesnt even make sense, the NFL would be open to lawsuits because people are being discriminated on based on their weight.  rules like that cannot exist.  If you are above a certain weight in Pop-Warner there are other leagues and othe rteams you can play on.  To bar someone from earning a living based on weight would cause huge problem.

Right, and that is why we all have jobs with ESPN, and other sport sites.

I don't see how this will ever happen. Models have weight clauses in their contracts. MMA fighters need to be at a certain weight if they want to fight, and yet they don't sue.

I will answer your question if you answer mine first. What brand of keyboard protector do you use, to save your computer from being destroyed from your non stop drooling? My goodness, you are too dumb to be a tragedy. What a pitty you are. I see that I butt hurt you a little too much. Sorry your ego got mangled. The blame is on you chump. Here are the facts, you insulted me twice, and then I insulted you. Now, you are all butt hurt trying to save face. But it's late for that. Run along and watch your girls gone wild VHS for the 20,000th time. I am sure it is true, all those girls are sending you secret signals telling you how much they want you. And after you are done jer*king off, just remember that is the most useful thing you have done all day. It is a crime a moron like you gets to have internet access while there is some genius born in Cuba that will never touch a computer.

Right, and that is why we all have jobs with ESPN, and other sport sites.

Whats stopping me, you, or anyone else from starting a site and doing exactly what he does?  We just didnt get lucky and have person from the NFL say thats the next big idea.  It's not like he started the whole thing.

I don't see how this will ever happen. Models have weight clauses in their contracts. MMA fighters need to be at a certain weight if they want to fight, and yet they don't sue.
MMA fighters have different divisions based on their weight.  because their heavy doesnt prevent them from fighting.  Its meant for a competive fight.  you dont want a 285lb man fighting a 145lb man. if trhey werent allowed to fight because of their weight they could.

Models also have different agencies and different types of products they can model. Some may model swim suits, others may model dresses, and some companies even look for plus sized women to model.

You also may be confused on my whole lawsuit theory. I'm not saying the player would win.  All i'm saying is that the backlash and horrible publicity the NFL would get from it would be pretty damning.  ACLU groupswould be foaming at the mouth to go after the NFL.

First, screw ACLU, second, it cannot be any worse than it is now with all these players coming after the league. Bob Costas made an excellent point, the league is soaring higher than ever, and right next too it, is soaring the danger of this league being extinct due to all the lawsuits. They need to start acting now, major steps are needed. Now, one might be, the end of tackling as we know it. or how knows, maybe make the players be smaller, and help curb some of the damage they inflict.

I just have a hard time believing that players being smaller will help stop injuries. Injuries happen in every level of football with players that are all sorts of sizes from big to small.  A players weight wont prevent a guy from blowing out his knee, breaking a leg, or getting a concussion. If they change the weight requirements and someone gets a concussion will they have to change it again, will they need to stop contact all together, will the league fold to keep everyone safe?  There is a risk that every player takes in ootball.  players both current and former need to be more like harry Carson who always says he knew the risks going into the game and figured there would be some ramification from them after.  He refuses to be involved in any of these lawsuits becauseof that

This is the dumbest idea I've seen regarding football safety in a long time.

The only issue this would possibly work towards solving is obesity. Oh and cutting your weight by dehydrating yourself is dangerous, it is actually very dangerous. It reduces the levels of the fluids that cushion your brain, boxers have died because of this following trauma to the head.

Lastly, boxing and MMA have weight levels for competitive balance. Safety might matter now, but not when they were first instituted.

This quote will illustrate the genius that is having NFL players cut water weight for brain safety:

they conclude that dehydration causes changes in the volume of intra-cranial compartments that may put sportsmen and women at increased risk of brain damage from contusion injury (bruising) and internal haemorrhage after head injuries.

Not buying that crap for a second. What test did you run? We legitimately do not even know enough about the brain(or human body in general) to make any sort of formula.

So now its just a hypothetical. I see. Earlier you implied that the only reason it wouldn't work is because people like me weren't progressive enough for your amazing new ideas. It took me about ten minutes of my time to completely obliterate your little folly of an idea, so now you downplay it like it was only a hypothetical and you were never seriously suggesting it to begin with.

Laughable.
