Is the champion the best team?

The great thing about NCAA basketball is that it is all about winning the tournament, not about who the best team is.

I think often times, the best team gets upset and a lesser team actually cuts down the nets.

The best team is always debatable, but the champion is indisputable.

Some people think that t he champion is obviously the "best team" but I don't think that is always true, or even relevant. Who cares? The title is what counts.

 

Impossible for the champion to always be the best team. After all UNC has won the NCAA tourney 5 times

One of the best examples I can think of is Arizona in 1997. Arizona was a perrenial power of that time and yet that was not anywhere near their best team. In fact, many thought at 19-9 going into the tournament that they were a bubble team but got a 4 seed which was controversial.

They went on to beat 3 #1 seeds which had never been done and has not been repeated as far as I know.

Kansas was the overall number 1 seed and they got very arrogant and overlooked Arizona and it bit them.

At least 4 or 5 teams that Lute Olsen had were better that failed to win the title.
 

The only measurement is winning. Who cares if the "better team" got upset.

I agree, This is why NCAA basketball is better than the BCS. It is all about who wins, not who the perceived best teams is. 

There is not always agreement on who the best team is, the winner however is indisputable.

If I recall correctly that was at least the third meeting between Nova and GTown that year. Gtown was clearly the better team but Nova got the title.

If you win the championship, you're the best team when it counts and that's all that matters. The champion is the best team when of matters.

No. But it is once again it's a subjective thing even then. There have been teams that won it that didn't even win their conference so that tells you something If you lose the NC game and you are a better team than your opponent, you weren't prepared for the game, obviously, and didn't desreve it. That's what makes college ball so much better. What do want to do? Go to a 7 game series like the pros?  Not!

Champions are not nesscarly the best team that year. It's that way in nearly every sport, Kings in NHL ravens in NFL SF in MLB.are just perfect examples from this past year alone.

The best team rarely wins it all. But who cares if you are the best team or not if you are the champs.

In 1988, Kansas entered the tourney at 21-11 and got a #6 seed. There got a few lucky breaks with early upsets and faced an 11, 14 and 7 seed to make it to the Elite Eight. Standing before them and a national title were the very three teams that had beat them at home that year- Kansas State, Duke and Oklahoma. Both Kansas State and Oklahoma had actually beat them twice each prior to the tourney that season. KU, led by Danny Manning, exacted revenge and rolled to the national title.

The best team doesn't always win the championship, but "best team" is subjective, while the championship trophy is anything but.

If your team is the best team then they wouldn't have lost would they?
The best team does not always win. Match ups and other variables occur. Upsets happen. Doesn't mean that team wasn't the best, just not on that day.

At the end of the day though championships are what matter.

But using your logic, 07 giants are the greatest team ever lol.

I understand your logic, the thing is though 2 years ago VCU was in the final four. If they had won that year would you honestly say they were the best? They were one of the last in. I'm not hating on the little guy, but getting hot at the correct time and winning it all (as uconn did in that very tourney) is alot different from dominating an entire season and having one bad game (07 pats, 68 colts ect ect).

I love seeing lesser teams win it all. At the end of the day i would rather have a championship then be known as the best team. But the best team is not nessacarily the one who wins the championship. There is nothing wrong with that.

Upsets by the NC team is not always what happens either. Upsets in earlier rounds could set up easier match ups for the eventual winner when an underdog shoots their wad in their best game of the year against a top seed and can't repeat the performance again.
That being said, any team that wins 6 straight games against the top 64 (68) teams this year is going to earn the # 1 label for sure.
This could be the year a # 1 seed finally bites the dust in the 1st round and it wouldn't be a big suprize.
