Big Ten 1st Team: Who's #5?

February 11, 2013 12:09 pm

There are 4 locks for First Team All Big Ten, in my opinion.

G Trey Burke, Michigan
G Victor Oladipo, Indiana
F Deshaun Thomas, Ohio State
F Cody Zeller, Indiana

The question is, who rounds out the team? There are quite a few contendors, in no particular order:

G Aaron Craft, Ohio State
G Brandon Paul, Illinois
G Keith Appling, MSU
G Gary Harris, MSU
G Andre Hollins, Minnesota
G Tim Hardaway Jr., Michigan
F Branden Dawson, MSU
F Trevor Mbakawe, Minnesota
F Christian Watford, Indiana
C Jared Berggren, Wisconsin
C AJ Hammons, Purdue

I would probably give Hardaway Jr. a slight edge at this point, but it is too close to call. Hard to keep a Spartan off the 1st team, but they are so balanced that it is hard to pick one guy.

If I missed someone obvious, make sure to call me an idiot or something in your overly critical response.

Interesting question. I'd also lean towards Hardaway.

I would also have to lean to Hardaway Jr.  Though I was seriously considering Mbakwe.

Because of one game? ONE game? I didn't know people weren't allowed to have a bad day.

Well, I suppose a 23-point loss is merely a bad day.

My question was posed in the context of so many espousing Hardaway.

Just FYI.

pshaw.  Hardaway is a talent, no doubt...but the kid was brutally stifled to 2pts last night (it wasn't a "bad day"...he was totally taken out of the game by a far superior talent - Dawson.  btw, he was taken out exactly the same way last year with 2pts too).  Head-to-head against Dawson, Hardaway is second-rate at best.  And yall can keep Burke in the top-5 - the kid is a genuine phenom, but it's almost guaranteed he's out of the POY race after that ONE GAME disaster.

personally, I'd feel a lot more comfortable if the OP had "locked-in" only one top-5 B1G player (VO) and left the remaining 4 slots open for discussion.

Those four are locks, barring injury. You could disagree, but you'd be wrong. Smile

As much as I would love to say AJ Hammons, and I think he just may have the best future of ANY player in the Big Ten, once he matures, I can't add him to this list now.

I think I would say Branden Paul at Illinois.
If he was not hurt, I might have put the guy from Penn St. I can't remember his name now but he was the heart, soul and talent of that team.
