Beach...how many snaps he played only shows that the defense was on the filed alot.....not howe mnay games he played.
I don't follow. Snaps are snaps. Anyone can go to NFL.com and see that he played in 30 of 32 games from 2010-11. I was trying to take it a step further and show you that not only did he only miss two games he was 4th on the team in number of snaps played.

for them to restructure Troy would mean they would extend his contract for ____ years.
I agree, they won't restructure his deal. He only has two years left on his contract so a restructure wouldn't do them much good anyway.

and according to NFL.com he only played and started 7 games last year.....missed over half the season.
I think I see the confusion now. I acknowledged the time he missed last year but earlier in this thread I read "sitting on the bench for the most part the last two years" and I've read similar things in different threads. Polamalu played in all 16 games in 2011 and played 91% of the snaps.
It's just not accurate and I wanted to clear it up.

in 10 years he only played 16 games 3 times and has missed over 1 full year collectively in the last 4 years. This is of major concern or should be when it comes time to renegotiate.
Nah because there won't be a negotiation. Polamalu is due 7.5M this year and 8.25M next year. If you tried to restructure his deal you could save about 3M in 2013 but you would set yourself up for either a monster cap hit in 2014 or a buttload of dead money.

Troy is not a restructure candidate. Everyone can stop worrying about it.

why doesnt woodley and troy take a paycut as well, since they cannot see the field more than half a season either. if they cut silverback those 2 should head out with him

RR#1, who do they have behind Kruger if he doesnt resign?
Courtney Upshaw.  He was basically a Jarett Johnson clone in that he was a pretty good run stopper but not quite as good against the run.  Profootball focus had him rated as the second best 3-4 OLB against the run around week 15 or so.  I'm not sure if that stuck the whole season but it shows he's good there.  He also made probably more splash plays this year than Johnson did in 2011.

The kid is very strong/powerful, if he can drop a little weight/add speed, he could be something great.

Players who the Steelers have to restucture are Ben Woodley and Timmons besides cutting players this is the only way the Steelers can shed the 13 million or so that they are under the cap. They can save about million if they restructure Antonio Brown's contract Heath Miller would be a good canindate if you new if his knee was not going to be an issue and you wanted to extend his contract to say 2016.

Players like Ike Taylor Harrison and Troy are tough to restucture because you really do not want to extend thier contracts because of either thier age or injury history the Steelers would be able to save some money this year but all that money would be on next years cap which would not do the Steelers any good seeing the cap is supposed to remain stagnate in 2014.

Even with $3million cut in base pay Harrison would still be making $5million plus the $2 million for his signing bonus which maybe Beach can help me out has Harrison already been paid that money or do they spread out the payments. I am not sure where Harrison would go that they would want to pay him $5 million this year maybe Cleveland they have the money but probably have a less chance at making the playoffs than the Steelers do.

Same with Troy if they cut his base salary in half he would still be making over $6 million this year is anybody else going to pay him that much if he was released tough decisions.

I honestly think James Harrison and Troy Polamalu are both back next year.  Though, Harrison is the more likely candidate to be released.  I don't think there's any way Troy isn't a Steeler in 2013.  Harrison is about 60/40 at this point.

The reality is that the Steelers aren't in nearly the cap hell that everyone thinks they are.  We went through this, maybe even moreso, last offseason.  Omar Khan designed several of the big deals they negotiated the past few years with restructures in mind, knowing that the new CBA was on the way and they might need some alternatives.  Timmons, Woodley and Ben all have contracts that are very conducive to these types of situations.

James Harrison may need to take a paycut to stay a Steeler, but it will be because the team doesn't see the value in the deal, not because they can't afford the cap charge.  If they felt James was worth the money, they could find a way to make it work, just as they will with Troy.

I say do the proper restructuring and give this group one more chance at making a run with so many injuries last year it was really hard to tell if this group can still get it done. They need to sign Kennan Lewis and see if this defense can stay healthy and get back to getting more pressure on the Qb and start getting turnovers.

The offense is going to need to be upgraded Wallace is surely gone so a WR in the draft is a priority also a cow bell running back a game changer Redman Dwyer and Batch do not fit the bill they are support players good for a game or two but you cannot count on them for them to be game changers big time threats.

Depth is needed on the Oline probaly Starks Colon and Foster are gone with the Bicknell wanting more speedy athletic guys once again this group has to find a way to stay healthy and Gilbert is really going to have to step up hopefully he comes into cap in good shape and stronger so he doesn't get knocked backwards so much and falling into other linemans knees.

Like Beach said there is going to be a lot of veterans looking for jobs after the draft and in August so you can build your depth there by getting them on the cheap. You need to stay healthy the 49ers oline played the same starters every game last year s how you build cohesion. njuries on defense but thier offense was pretty healthy all year long health is such a huge factor. This next man up theory doesn't work when you lose 2 starters every game Bouchette said the Steelers missed an average of 5.5 starters a game last year.

Nobody knows if the Steelers are even going to ask James to take a pay cut.  Re-structure yes, but pay cut we dont know.  I also think everyone drastically undervalues Jason Worilds.  This guy has played well when on the field.  Injuries have slowed him, but no serious injuries to note.  The only reason Worilds has not received more playing time is because the two guys in front of him are studs (not counting last year Frown).  Jason will be provided an opportunity next year for an increased work load whether James is there or not.  Unfortunately for the Steelers, Jason is in the last year of his contract and when he performs well next year we will have another Keenen Lewis situation on our hands.  This is the chance you take when holding on to veteren players but I dont blame Colbert one bit, he tried to win another ring.  They will figure this out, Steelers and Linebackers is like white rice with soy sauce.

Enjoy the day,

We will find out fairly soon what's going to happen. I hope hope you are right about James returning.  He looked really good the last part of the season and I honestly didn't see much from Worilds or Carter when they filled in for him especially against the run.  Worilds looks much better on the other side.  Might be that he just needed reps to improve from but I what I've seen of him on the right side so far has not impressed me.

6xaj8,
You did not see much from Carter in the 2nd half of the season because he was put on IR in mid November.

just checked his twitter account via google and it states he has gone elsewhere, odd really...has there ever been a more under-rated LB? maybe even player- i mean think about it, he was a shoe in for a second DPOY but lost it to you know who, and to fines also i guess, well he would have maybe lost it to mathews too but that would have put him in elite company a true great. and here we are, i feel as though is lack of tact in the public arena has really cost him. time to see how good those back ups are.

As he hasn't been released from the Steelers as of yet, I don't think this one year deal pertains to the NFL...he is still under contract with the Steelers, he can't sign with another team...

I hope so, that way the Steelers get some draft picks from that team for tampering with a player under contract.

Probly not, but maybe he's trying to imply he won't re-structure or take a pay cut and therefore if the Steelers release him, he'll sign elsewhere for 1 season.  On one hand he seems like the type that would take a pay decrease, but I remember he was supportive of Wallace during his hold-out, so maybe Harrison is the type to stick to his contract.  I hope not.
