just a question

February 13, 2013 10:44 am

I am a White Sox fan so I apologize for coming on your board, but me and a couple of Cub fan friends of mine were discussing something that I thought was interesting and wanted to get more opinions on it.

It is not unheard of in Baseball for a team to go from worst to first.  The Braves and Marlins I recall had teams that did that.  If the Cubs were able to be competiitive in their division this year would you be willing to trade some of your better assests in the minor leagues to get older higher paid players to complement the major league club?

The question basically is would you go for it, or would you settle down and stick with the plan you had in place?

Thanks guys and good luck this year.

Have you been watching what the Cubs have been doing? There is a 0% chance theo would get rid of any talent in the farm system.

No not really.  I usually only follow my favorite teams, but I know that the Cubs are trying hard to build up the farm system to grow their own talent to use on the major league club or use as trade bait later on

Actually, so did the Cubs from 06' to 07'

Trade the assetts now? No!

Acquire some quality free agents to compliment the parent club and give them a chance at being competitive and having a chance to make the playoffs while the youth and farm are still developing? Yes.

It's the do BOTH thing that I'm in favor of. I know I'm in the minority on the issue, but being the best you can be at every single level of the organization year in and year out should be the ultimate goal.

Cessna98,

It would depend upon the return.  If the Rockies were offering Tulo/Cargo for prospects, Miami offered Stanton for prospects or the Rays offered Price for prospects; the Cubs would likely try to pull it off.  The key to these deals are the players listed are under team control for several more years and involve prospects.  However, if a team were trying to push a 1/2 year rental that would net no draft pick compensation, that would be highly unlikely.

In White Sox terms:

If you are looking for a Konerko for Rizzo deal, that isn't going to happen.  De Aza for Brett Jackson and a prospect, that is a possibility.
