Mingo, Jordan Rising; Moore Falling

February 13, 2013 12:10 pm

As we all know, the top of the draft is pretty fluid this time of year. Guys like Manti Te'o, once considered a top 10 lock, has now tumbled into the later half of the 1st round.

Perhaps follwing that lead is Damontre Moore- he's been a top 5/top 10 guy all along, but now reports are starting to surface that he's a late 1st round talent. Honest analisys, or misdirection from an interested organization? You never can be sure this time of year.

Two names that are trending up over the last week or so: Barkevious Mingo and Dion Jordan.

Mingo is already considered one of the elite athletes at DE this year, and now I'm reading that he's packed 15 pounds onto his 6'5" frame and has gained speed in the process. Personally I like the longer DE's in the 6'6" or 6'7" range, but Mingo is supposed to have long arms and a big wingspan, which is the important part of the length for a DE. He's pretty raw, but has huge upside at DE with his natural athleticism. Definitely a name to watch.

Jordan is a similar player- Long (6'6"), lanky and ultra athletic. He's certainly not a traditional 4-3 DE, but our system isn't exactly traditional. Jordan needs to pack on some weight, but he's got huge upside as a defensive playmaker.

It looks like there's 5 legitimate DEs in play for us right now at #5: Bjoern Werner, Damontre Moore, Barkevious Mingo, Dion Jordan and Ezekiel Ansah. We'll see who shakes out in the coming months...

A LOT of reports about Moore falling. If he shows good athletisicm at the combine, he would be a fine pick. Got a feeling he will show average athletisicm.

At #5, you take the freak athlete most of the time. Higher ceiling. The Lions generally take... "The good college player".

At this point, it would be shocking if the Lions don't consider Mingo at #5. Probably between him and Milliner. His elite speed in the wide 9 would suit his skill set perfectly.

Tpaul...

Wouldn't it be sweet if we could land teo in round two?

I wouldn't be opposed to getting him in the 2nd round, but there's a handfull of guys I'd rather take, led by Barret Jones and Margus Hunt. Matt Elam would be great, too...

Matt Elam is a beast no doubt.

Margus Hunt is 6'8 but I read that his upper body is the longer half and struggles with leverage. Also, under developed in the legs. Wouldn't mind taking a shot on him with the #65 pick instead.

The #36... Matt Elam or Jonathan Cyprien. Need to shore up the safety position bad.

I just saw some Ansah highlights and he's a beast. His stock rise at the combine. The guy is like 6'6 275lbs who can chase RBs. I wouldn't be upset if they took him at #5.

Mingo, Jordan Rising; Moore Falling

The National Football Post's Russ Lande has not spoken to an NFL scout who grades Texas A&M DE Damontre Moore in the first-round.

Lande himself gave Moore a second-round grade. After generating a lot of attention during the 2012 season and after declaring, Moore's evaluation appears to have lost steam in the eyes of a few scouts. We love his motor and the versatility he showed at defensive end and pass rushing linebacker, but Moore needs to use his hands and angles better.

Those 2 statements contradict each other. Milliner is not a top 5 pick. At best he will be a better than average NFL CB. You dont spend a top 5 on "better than average". Not if you want your team to get better anyway.

I was not impressed in the couple games I saw him in. I can say similar about Jordan. He seems to be just a pass rush specialist to me. i would not waste a top 5 on a "specialist".

It's interesting to see how things get schuffled and reshuffled this time of year.

It's why we are fans and the experts are supposed to know! I really hope Xanders has a handle on things and is in charge of the war room.

Mingo is a total risk reward guy. His stats at LSU have never merited a top 5 selection and alot of his upside is built into the fact of his athletisism and size. Mingo very well could be Javon Kearse. But he is equally able to be a Mike Mamula!

Just saw that Dion Jordan is having shoulder surgery for a torn labrum.

I think that this may see him slide to the late first /early second round. If he falls to the second I could see a few teams outside of the Lions that may look at him. There are two that draft prior to Detroit's second round pick; they are the Jaguars and the Eagles. Dallas and the Jets could be two teams that may look to move up to asnag him if he does fall out of the first round. It would be nice to screw the Cowboys again! Of course the Lions could always stay put and draft him if he wasn't taken by Philadelphia or Jacksonville.

mingo reminds me of pierre paul with slightly less impressive stats.
i think playing along side suh and fairley he would be able to use his athleticism much more affectively than most rookie DEs.

That's why the Brass is suppose to know so the experts can't pull the wool over their eyes to help the better teams. Most fans go by what the popular opinion is, instead of seeing for themselves and drawing their own conclusions. I really believe GM's and orgainzations fall prey to it.

I think you are right LCW.

If Milliner and the OT's are gone.

I would be shocked if Mingo wasn't a Lion.
