Just for fun

February 13, 2013 12:36 pm

Just noticed this today, thought I'd share, especially since there are always a bunch of Chiefs fans on the board. This one goes to you guys.

Seems like just about every offseason, there comes a time on some thread where a debate starts about who is the better franchise, the Chiefs or the Broncos. Now, everyone who isn't a lunatic knows that the Broncos are clearly the better franchise, but Chiefs fans aren't exactly known for their sanity. Despite the fact that the Broncos have more Super Bowl wins, more AFC Championships, more AFC West Championships, more playoff appearances, and more playoff wins, the Chiefs still have one thing on us that Chiefs fans have on us - their head to head record.

And it's true, the Chiefs do have the head to head record against us.  We are 50-56 all time against the Chiefs, 49-56 in the regular season and 1-0 in the playoffs.  The 60s really screwed us in this regard, as the Chiefs were an exceptional 19-1 against us that decade.

Now I'm sure most are aware that the Chiefs played their first three seasons in Dallas as the Texans before moving to Kansas City.  During those three years, the Texans were 6-0 against the Broncos.  Now of course those records still count because it's still the same franchise, but what I find interesting is that because of our sweep of the Chiefs this season, since they've been in Kansas City the Chiefs are 50-50 all time against the Broncos.  That's right, that head to head record the Chiefs have now only counts if you include the time they spent as the Texans.  And with a little luck, in as little as 3 years that overall head to head advantage could be gone as well, even with the Texans included.

Hang your hat on that while you can, Chiefs fans; you won't have it much longer.

An easy question to answer - the Broncos.

At present the Broncos have a much better owner and front office. That's all that needs to be said re: that aspect. As far as the records go, those that live in the past have nothing to look forward to in the future. The "debate" that any team has Xnumber of rings doesn't equate to what state their franchise is in today or tomorrow. How many players are in the HOF from any given team also doesn't amount to a hill of beans re: today.

Pretty sure we will close that gap and start distancing oursleves quickly here the next few seasons.

I'm not talking about today, or going forward, I'm talking about all time.  If you want to start a thread talking about who is in the better question going forward, by all means do so.

But for now, it's the offseason, the time for speculation and trash talking. And right now, since they've moved to Kansas City, the Chiefs no longer have a winning record against the Broncos.

Maybe. I hope so. But I honestly think Andy Reid was a good hire and may actually get the Chiefs turned around and make them stiffer competition. Actually, after the 60s the record has has been really tight, but that 1-19 killed us.  Still, ever since then we've only made up 12 games on them. However, I do think with Elway running things we're in a good position to overtake them. And they haven't swept the season series from us since 2000, so it's not like we're losing ground on them.

Ha! The Chiefs can have the '60s, the same way pathetic Browns fans harken back to the '50s for their so-called 'glory days' - like anyone but old farts give a crap about that age of football. It's like being a Montreal Canadiens fan in hockey and propping your franchise legacy on a boatload of championships won in a 6 team league when players bagged groceries in the offseason and smoked in between shifts. Or watching old black and white footage of a bunch of awky, skinny knobby kneed white boys throwing up a basketball at a peach basket. That also means that we've taken 3 out of every 4 since then (50-37 = .740%).

In any case, by the end of the Manning era we'll be tied or better all time, with 6(+?) to 2 advantage in Super Bowl appearances, 2(+?) to 1 in rings, with the only win head to head in the playoffs. What else is there?

Broncos are the better franchise by any measure that counts.

Did I mention "Chiefs suck" ??

Great post, Joe. And I totally agree with that last sentence, the Chiefs do indeed suck.

Hey, wait a minute!  I may be old (don't feel like it), and I may fart (often at times), but some of my best memories are going to the old Bears Stadium with my Dad to watch those early Broncos.  It's that past history that has made it the great game it is today.  Can you imagine at the end of a game, the players and fans walking off the field together?  I actually got to do that, I will never forget walking off the field at the end of the Broncos playing the Vikings at DU stadium looking up at the "purple people eaters!"  Too cool.

Those guys never made much money, played a far "tougher" kind of football, and involved the city much more so than it does today.

Many of todays fans are spoiled compared to those of yesteryear. Many are looking for the "wine and cheese" and "social" type of atmosphere.  It seems like many just go to the game and talk the whole dang time.

Yep, agree 100%, although I hate the Raiders just a little bit more...

If, and a bog if, they ever get a decnet QB.  They have good players on both sides of the ball.  They could be formidable quicly if they get the right QB.  There was specualtion on a few talk shows and online about Nick Foles?  And of course Alex Smith woudl be a good fit there.

It's a cursed franchise.  They may never be any good.
