 The NCAA has proposed a rule change that would eject any player who targets and contacts a defenseless opponent above the shoulders with a hit.

The Football Rules Committee, which met this week in Indianapolis, unanimously voted to increase the penalty to include an automatic ejection in addition to a 15-yard penalty. The proposal still awaits approval by the Playing Rules Oversight Panel on March 6.

There will always be the possibility of a judgement call.  But if it's your best defensive player:   A.  He should know better & B.  If he IS your best defensive player, he will know how to make the play without making it a cheapshot. 
 

Oh, J.C.  This is crap.  Do you know how many of those hits come after the WR ducks into the hit?

You can't give part time refs the ability to eject players based on a real time judgement call and no replay.

A lot of times the proper tackling technique can still result in a head to head hit because the ball carrier drops his head.  The tackler's facemask would have hit his chest if not for that.  That's the BALLCARRIER'S fault, but the defender gets penalized every time. 

Bigred, there is a big difference between a purposely malicious cheap shit**** and an accidental hit above the shoulders in real time fast speed action.......

I could maybe understand an ejection in the situation where WR jumps up for the ball - ball goes through his hands - WR comes back down & defender just lays into him as soon as he touches the ground when it's obvious the defender could have pulled up and avoided the hit.

But some of the personal fouls they call are stupid, I think.

IF they implement this rule there will be 100's of players with broken legs or ACL / MCL injuries in the next 5 years because that will be the only safe place to tackle an exposed WR in the open field w/ the ball in the air.  In my opinion.

at some point they will just have to stop playing the game!! this is non sense! yes we all want players to be safer, they can never be safe while playing this game! the wr oftens ducks into the hit, so now the d player is gone?? thats insane. its to hard to say make it a judgement call , when the refs are always making calls in favor of the ofense! well i sure hope teams have a ton of depth, if not they wont have a chance of winning when 4 outta the 11 on deffense are 2 or 3 rd stringers

As a highschool official, I see (insert eyesight joke here) this as bad rule. Let's hope this doesn't come to be.

I understand the difference.  I still don't think there are going to be that many "false calls" by the refs.  The refs are resonably good with the two different blocking the punter infractions, I don't think they'll be that many poor calls with this new rule.

I played high school ball was too small for college ball.  Mind you that was over 40 years ago.  So, shall I "PM" you my checking account number for the grand or should I just tell you to shove you donut where the sun don't shine?
  

They ejected an FSU player 2 seasons ago, Nigel Bradham for a hit he put on a Miami player... If this rule is just getting passed, how and why the hell did they eject him then? Not to mention it was a good hit. Never even left the ground

what about a mandatory retirement age. could be age  or could be something stat generated!  I just think guys going way past their prime is a big part of it too!
