Dumb and careless but not intentional. Didn't even give the slightest head tilt. If he was aiming for the achilles without trying to hurt him he might as well be a surgeon or play the lottery.

I don't condon Cooke's play a few years ago and called him out, but that looks like a different Cooke. No to mention when Cooke wanted to injure someone he'd go for the head and only the head so that is also something to think about.

Alfred, you forgot to mention how you guys smoothed the ice in between periods by taking teammates by their legs wheel barrow style while they stuck their tongue's out pushing them around the playing surface.

Players wet tongue's didn't stick to ice back then. The ice was afraid of the consequences.

Alf in your day the so called super Stars wouldn't be more than a 4th line goon in these days.  None of them could keep up with the speed or smarts of NHL players today!

When do the pens play the Sens again? Looking for Neil to decapitate cooke on the ice.

Cooke changed his game last I heard from him in order to stay in the NHL and good graces of Shanny and the bettman/daly law firm.

I find it hard to believe he lied or that evil exists in this world.

Carry on kids Innocent

***"You can't call the Crosby/Steckel incident Crosby's fault because Steckel targeted Crosby's head with the dirtiest move since Todd Bertuzzi and Steve Moore.  I am still stunned he was not suspended for that.  Just shows the leagues bias against the Penguins.  Thankfully they didn't suspend Cooke when he did nothing wrong.

The Cooke/Savard incident was clean and Savard should have been more aware of his surroundings.  Unlike the Crosby play where the puck was no where near the hit and Crosby was turning up ice following the puck, Savard just shot the puck a split second before the hit and he payed for it. "***

Yea, remember when McSorley clubbed Brashear over the head with his stick,.. that was good clean fun, ah the good old days..Tongue out

I respect your opinion but couldn't disagree more if I tried.  I've watched that hit what feels like a million times and I just now watched it again.  Just because an NHL official in charge of officiating ( Campbell or Shanahan) say a hit is legal doesn't mean it's legal.  Look at the timeline of some of Cooke's hits over the years and how many dirty hits the NHL has let go.  The Savard hit was awful and regardless of when Savard got rid of the puck the bottom line is Cooke targeted Savard's head.  It was disgusting and it ended Savard's career....

This stupid "keep your head up or die" mentality is going to kill a player one day and then we'll see more rule changes then anybody can dream of seeing.   A death will completely change the game and the league's attitude.  Anybody who thinks I'm kidding or exaggerating can laugh but with how fast and strong these players have become it's just a matter of time.  And then "knowing your surroundings" will no longer be a requirement.  Hitting a defenseless player will no longer be allowed.....

Taking out the red line was a good idea to speed up the game so players can get more concussions.

Next the NHL will remove the blueline because they will think the game needs to attract more fans by speeding up the action up a little more.

Hey I don't hear George Carlin complaining Tongue out from the grave.

Sens owner:

"To have him taken out by a goon is unconscionable," Melnyk began. "Whether it was accidental, or whether it was reckless, or whether it was intentional, to me it doesn't matter.

"It's something that never should have happened. This player should never be playing in this league. It's a league for elite players," said Melnyk.

The Senators owner was asked if Cooke, who has been suspended five times by the NHL during his career, is a changed player nowadays.

"I don't buy any of that garbage. Five times? No, we're number six? How about seven and eight? At what point do you say, 'you know what? Maybe he's not changed.' You do this enough times, don't try to convince me or anybody else. People are way too intelligent. The guy gets suspended five times. That's how many times he's been suspended, never mind how many times he's not been suspended.

Pre Instigator rule, pre-bettman we had Gretzky protected by McSorley and Semenko. Now any pos can end a great players career without fear of answering to the opponents enforcers.

The NHL is to slow to change in positive ways and I'm shocked they didn't radically make rule changes for this season, post lockout like they did after the last lockout.

One correction though, it wasn't a few years ago when Cooke last went for people's heads.  Last season was the first year he stayed clean in a while.  I think too many people are giving him too much credit for one clean season.

An ironic post from you, a Red Wings fan who employs the dirtiest hitter in the league in Niklas Kronwall.  I don't think he has ever made a hit where he did not leave the ice to cheap shot someone.

Taking out the red line was a good idea to speed up the game so players can get more concussions.

What's even more funny is not only did they remove the red line and speed up the game letting players take longer runs and causing more concussions but goals are down as well.  The purpose was supposedly to speed up the game and increase scoring production but all it has done is cause problems.   Goals were up for a year or two until coaches of teams that can't score figured out how to beat the system and stop people from scoring without ending up in the penalty box.   Removing the line ended up doing nothing positive.

As for your comment on the instigator rule, I can't disagree with that either.  But I don't think they'll be helping us out that way any time soon.  I think the instigator rule is here to stay.   Too many people don't believe it'll help keep idiots like Cooke under control.

Now maybe I'm just getting old and I'm forgetting stuff but I swear to God I don't remember Stevey Y or Federov or Lidstrom almost ever take hits like the ones Cooke and some others dish out.   When did you ever see anybody cross check stevey y or Lids get slammed into the boards from behind?

Did Stevey Y NEVER have his head down in the middle of the ice?  Why didn't he constantly get smoked like players do today.

I think we know the answer.

Nice try buddy.  Actually not really a nice try for a couple reasons.   First of all even though I think Kronwall is a very good dman you haven't heard me say good things about his big hits.   You ASSUME I'm ok with hits Wings players are involved with but you're wrong.

Second of all Kronwall might put 2 or 3 massive hits on people in a year and you'll rarely if ever see him blindside somebody with an elbow in the head or a crosscheck from behind into the boards face first.

"People think hockey is a sport. Hockey is not sport. Hockey is three activities going on at the same time: ice skating, playing with a puck, and beating the sh** out of somebody. If these guys were intelligent at all, they would do these things one at a time. First you go ice-skating, then you play with a puck, then you go to the bar and beat the sh** out of somebody. The day would last a lot longer, and these guys would have a whole lot more fun.

Tell you another reason hockey is not a sport -- it's not played with a ball. Anything that isn't played with a ball can't be a sport. These are my rules, I make them up. Hockey is played with a puck. What is a puck? I never even heard of a puck outside of hockey. The only other place you'll find a puck is in the urinal to control the smell in the bathroom. And as far as I'm concerned, any game where the main object is something that came out of a urinal is definitely not a sport."
