Cingrani in camp to start

GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- The plan remains to have Reds lefty pitching prospect Tony Cingrani pitch as a starter in camp. The expectation is that Cingrani can begin the season at Triple-A Louisville and be backup depth if someone in the big league rotation goes down.

As a September call-up, Cingrani worked out of the bullpen, but the Reds don't have any thoughts on doing that this season.

"He can always relieve," Reds manager Dusty Baker said. "But he's got to work on his breaking ball to make him a complete pitcher. There aren't many power left-handers around. The ones that are, are very good."

Cingrani, 23, was the organization's Minor League Pitcher of the Year in 2012 after he went a combined 10-4 with a 1.73 ERA at Class A Bakersfield and Double-A Pensacola. He posted a 1.80 ERA in three appearances for the Reds.

"He knows he can pitch," Baker said. "He's one of the few guys I've seen that pitches with just his fastball and occasional breaking balls and some changeups."

This from Mark Sheldon, MLB. Thought the Maddux reference is pretty interesting.

Leake still in Baker’s plans

With Aroldis Chapman in camp working to be in the rotation, much speculation is centered on what might become of last year’s fifth starter, Mike Leake.

Actually, this is the exact same scenario the Reds had last year.

“I’ve already talked to him. We weren’t sure until up to the end [of spring] last year,” Reds manager Dusty Baker said Thursday morning. “We’ve got six starters. He’s still in my plans.”

Chapman was moved to the bullpen at the end of last spring when injuries forced the change. The Reds wound up having no injuries to the rotation and used the same five starts throughout. It would be delusional to think they’d be that fortunate two years in a row, so the Reds are definitely not taking any chances. Leake had an inconsistent season last year as he went 8-9 with a 4.58 ERA.

“The toughest years in the big leagues are the third, fourth and fifth years when everybody knows you,” Baker said. “They know you’re not getting your breaking ball over. They know you follow your changeup with a fastball. Now it’s up to you to readjust. There is no room for a marginal or bad year. People just want to take you off to the side. Every pitcher I know has had a bad year or two.”

“He’s a Maddux type. I made a call to Greg and Greg talked to him about some things.”

Dusty IS as Dusty DOES...NOT as he says.

Dusty's exact comments about the rookie Cingrani (which he has NO plans to use as a starter this season) could be made in triplicate about Aroldis Chapman...who Dusty has repeatedly come up with unfounded excuses to keep in the bullpen.

Greg Maddux ??? LMAOAWBTTBS ( LMAO atwhoeverbelievesthistotalbullschid
t)....The best career advice Greg Maddux could give Mike Leake, that he could actually USE, is to stay out of the Mall.

At Leake's age, Maddux could change speeds upward to 15 mph because he had a fastaball that approached 92-93 mph, and 2 other pitches that he also threw for strikes. After his rookie year, Maddux didn't have an ERA as high as 4.00 for 17 more years. In order for Leake to be able to vary speeds that much, he'd have to toss underhand or develop a knuckleball... Not even Greg Maddux can "teach" an 85 mph fastball into being 92...especially on a 20 second cell phone call...Mike Leake is NO Greg Maddux.

That one is ALMOST as tall a tale as this one from the previous offseason:
I'm going to work with Drew Stubbs this winter on some things...to reduce his strikeouts....and he's going to bunt more next year"

Gotta love Dusty...

He's one of the few guys I've seen that pitches with just his fastball and occasional breaking balls and some changeups

 What ??

...what does Dusty think OTHER pitchers throw ?  Mostly fastballs, with occasional breaking balls and some changeups, I suppose.

The previous is  no reflection on you John....info spread quicker from Custers last spring training, than from the first days of MLB spring training.

It would be nice if a baseball reporter would actually WATCH some spring training, and give a little info from PERSONAL OBSERVATION...instead of just sticking a recorder into Dusty's ever-mumbling mouth for 12 seconds then running off for golf.

I'd get fired...I'd be asking Dustaroo "What did this team learn from the playoffs last year, Dusty" ?    " Are you going to stop no out double steals and star walking the 8 hitter to set up a force in the 9th with the closer on deck next time, or just keep blaming stuff like that on the players" ?

In other camp news (also from Reds.com), it sounds like Arroyo thinks this might be his last year with the team.  If it is, I hope he goes out with a bang.  How good was that trade - Arroyo for Wily Mo Pena!

Is this Arroyo's last year of contract ? I thought there was an option for 2014...

Overall, Arroyo's been a very good pitcher for the Reds...and Wily Mo was a low, low price to pay. Back in the day, Arroyo was a 4-5th starter for the Redsox, and for a while (more due to the Reds LACK of quality pitching rather than Arroyo's superior pitching) he was a front of the rotation guy for the Reds. It looks like the improved Reds pitching may push him toward the back of the rotation again before he's done, but that's normal...as it should be.

Also, I like Bronson Arroyo's honesty...and he's been a good influence on the young pitchers. He's been an incredibly durable and dependable pitcher- lots of innings without missed starts...and unless he's injured, I don't think he's near done yet.

I do think that a mid 30's pitcher that tops out at 86 mph in a small park, better have great control or his ERA can get pretty high pretty quickly, but there is less stress on that kind of arm, too...unless your name is Brandon Webb...Arroyo may pitch a long time. It may be his 8 digit per year salary that he feels might get in the way of longer contracts with the Reds, and he may be right.... Cueto, Latos, Bailey, Chapman, Leake, etc...haven't started being truly expensive yet, but it's coming, and they all have 7-10 years of MLB life expectancy, and possibly $100 million (or more) of contract dollars left to earn in them.

In fairness, the two items I clipped were from official Reds sources, not from the beat writers. So I didn't expect much controversy.
In a few days, I will re-up my subscription to mlb.tv and see if I can catch a few spring games, either with the radio team or maybe some highlights. If the games are televised, it's hard to predict.

I did see that from Bronson, who -- I presumed -- said that if he still has a good year, he might try the free agent market. Seems to think the future is fairly certain for that pitching staff. At 36-37, he may hope he doesn't get Boras for an agent.

Some writer posted the run on Dusty propaganda ... And he's always so full of bull. I suppose as the slowest moving object in ST, the manager is the easiest foil to catch for a statement, or seven... Marge lost her team from such tactics.

Doesn't sound like Nick Masset is going to do much more pitching at the top level.

Shoulders are usually not totally repairable.

GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- As Reds pitchers work in bullpen sessions, reliever Nick Masset is unable to join them. Masset, who missed all of last season, is still rehabilitating from right shoulder surgery he had in September.

Masset began a throwing program in January, and until recently was only playing catch three times a week. But it's been slow going.

"Now I'm starting to build up to throwing every day," Masset said on Thursday. "It's not exactly where I want it to be right now. But I understand that it is a process. I'm really going to have to grind through the aches and pains to build arm strength to get my arm able to throw consistently without having any setbacks."

Masset's throwing program is slated to last at least three months before he can return to game action. It's unclear when he can begin working from a mound again.

"I don't have a crystal ball right now," Masset said. "Being here every day, grinding it out and working hard with the doctors and trainers and everyone helping me out, it will be the key to getting me back on the field."

That's why we don’t have a player’s name synonymous with shoulder surgery the likes of Tommy John for elbows. I'd agree with you that his days in the MLB are probably over. The $5.5M he's been paid for the 2012-13 seasons may not quench his desire to compete, but I'm sure the money helps his peace of mind.

Money isn't everything, but it makes all bad things better.

Masset could have blown a shoulder playing catch with a kid, bowling with a buddy, or falling out of a hammock...but Aflac wouldn't cover a $5.5 mil band aid like MLB.

I thought that Ryan Madson got hosed by his agent Scot Boras turning a $35 mil Phillies offer into a $12 mil Reds package after a failed attempt at bluffing a better offer, until I realized that $12 mil was paid for zero innings pitched...as it turned out, Boras really hosed Madson AND the Reds at the same time.

With any sense at all, most MLB vets should be set for life after very few MLB seasons...but some get additional warning...like guys drawing 7 or 8 digit salaries while nursing potentially career ending injuries. I feel for guys blowing careers before they get either an education or a big pro payday, but don't have the same sympathy for these guys. They lived the dream AND got rich at an age most are just starting to get past an entry level career salary.

The Reds did pretty well last year without Masset. I think they can again.

Sounds like Izturis is kind of "iffy" for making the team.

GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- In each of the past two offseasons, the Reds signed a veteran infielder to serve as backup shortstop. Two years ago, Edgar Renteria served that role; last season it was Wilson Valdez. This spring, Cesar Izturis will try to make the team as backup to Zack Cozart after signing a Minor League contract last month.

"It all depends on the dynamics of the team. You don't want to have him around just to have him around," manager Dusty Baker said on Friday. "He has to be part of the team. He has to bring something to the table."

Izturis, 33, briefly played for Baker (22 games) in 2006, with the Cubs.

"He was injured when I had him," Baker said. "I'm curious to see if he's still the same. He could pick it, big time. He had a relative bat, decent speed and knows how to play the game."

WHAT ??

Dusty is wondering if Izturis is still "the same" ?? ...same as in 2006 ??? Or does he mean wondering if he's still hurt ?

What is a "relative" bat ?

What ELSE besides a glove do backup shortstops like Valdez, Renteria or Izturis EVER bring ?

Someone needs to check Dusty's meds.

All things equal, I like 3-4 choices for 1-2 jobs...But, spring training is short, and how a player performs in a few weeks in March (or a few weeks in ANY season) ISN"T neccessarily how he's going to play the rest of the season.

I don't know a lot about any of the "utility infielder" candidates- Hannahan, Donald, Izturis and Burriss... the back of their baseball cards say none of them have been impressive hitters. I think Hannahan is defensively limited to the corner INF spots, Izturis was primarily a SS, and I saw Burriss playing 2b for the Giants, I believe. I don't think I've seen Donald play at all, but he and Hannahan are they only guys listed on the roster so far...the others are non-roster invitees, giving them a somewhat lesser chance of making the team,  I think....as long as Donald CAN play SS and Hannahan CAN hit better than the 3 others (shouldn't have a problem there).

I'm HOPING... NONE of them are needed much this season by the Reds... other than an occasional pinch hitter or off day replacement assignment, and some paper insurance for players that never get hurt....for instance:

If Hannahan can play 3b and hit his weight, Frazier could spell a LF or 1b...especially against a lefty pitcher...uh....that is, if Ludwick or Votto didn't already hit lefties better than Hannahan or Frazier. The same could be said for anyone spelling Cozart or Phillips. I don't even like the prospect of regularly using a "defensive" replacement...for instance, substituting Izturus at 3b for Frazier in late innings....alll that means is that your everyday guy is hurting you everyday.

A good bench IS important...especially if you like to play all of it in the same game once in a while...but, IMO, the best bench is the one least used.
