giver uppers

OK I have heard recently a couple friends say that they've given up on the Lions. My question is what do giver uppers do? Do they adopt a team(fair weather fans) or do they become like a non denominational church and just watch games?? I'm stumped!    

I for one come here to complain. Wouldnt call myself a giver upper, just a realist. Been rooting since 1976 or so and other then Barry Sanders the Lions have given me far less.

LMAO....."I come here to complain"!!!!! No $hit???? Ditto on the Tigers' board. Well....they say the first step in solving a problem is to recognize you HAVE a problem.

(I thought you already had jumped to the Seahawks, muzz. Or any team that drafts Dennard.)

What they do dave is jump on the biggest, fastest moving wagon on the wagon trail and stay there until the wheels fall off that wagon or they jump when the wagon they jumped from gets bigger and faster then they go back. 

TBB has it right I think.

But I also think they whine a lot.

I don't begrudge anyone disenchanted with the current state of the Lions. One playoff appearance in forever and an 0-16 season tends to get fans jaded. The lack of success IMO is the reason so many fans yo-yo on their following of the Lions and to me thats ok. It's when Detroit is regularly over .500 and had some more playoff appearances that bothered me.

Plus it's the fans that are a barometer for the management. The Millen man march, the fire Millen chants, website, ect not to mention all the head coaches that began with the letter M....minus Dick Juron.

We are not the Patriots we are not the Steelers, we are not even the Bears so I can get the guys that blister the moves Detroit makes, I even agree with some of them and it makes the arguements and opinions better but thats just my take.

I admit to being a "giver upper" to some degree. I tried to jump ship and land where the grass has ALWAYS been greener. But it didn't work. It was an epic fail. I was just as miserable as a Packers fan, maybe more so. I was trying to force something that simply wasn't there. I felt like a homeless drifter that snuck inside a mansion. I didn't belong. And everyone that did belong could tell that I was an imposter. I don't know if being a Lions fan for 30 years gives off a certain stench, but I wasn't fooling anyone.

I'm convinced that if the Lions ever did become a well run and successful franchise I would have absolutely no clue how to behave or even how to feel. I'm so conditioned to being a miserable sports fan that I almost think being covered in filth is where I'm most comfortable.

I never knew why fate chose the Detroit Lions for me. But I'm starting to wonder if it's because my personality prefers misery over happiness. That's a depressing thought if it's true. But I just think if the Lions ever had a truly great team capable of doing great things my mind would reject it, and the thing that I think I want most actually wouldn't bring me any joy if it were to come true.

So, I don't think a "giver upper" is the best way to describe me as a Lions fan. In reality I am extremely loyal. But the thing that I'm loyal to is misery.

They were never real fans in the first place. Kind of like a woman that dates a guy until something better comes along. No sense of loyalty.

When I date a guy, I stick it out. Thru thick and thin I tell ya. Doesn't matter if a better guy comes along, I...,,, wait,.....what!?! Bears Suck! Lions Rule!!!

damn right!!!  4-12 and we've got posters upset over their perception that people are whining.  Bullshat, thats simply the truth and just like Nicholson said, "YOU CANT HANDLE THE TRUTH!!!"  The truth is that with the clown show running Detroit mediocre is the very best you are ever going to get. 

 

But I also think they whine a lot.

I rest my case, absolutely idiotic post .  There is no sugar coating it or politically correct way to say that.  It's a ridiculous statement that anyone posting negative sentiment against a 4-12 team is considered a whiner.

No its not.  4-12 was last year.  How long are people going to bich about it.  Most have moved on and are talking about next year and the draft.  During the season while it is happening I can understand.  Those still crying over last year at this point are whiners.

Thats the difference between winners and losers in sports and life.  Losers never get over it. They constantly dwell on how much they have suked instead of moving on.  Winners just move on to the next point or game or season because they know once it is over you cant change it and you cant let it effect the present and future.  You learn from it and do better going forward. 

You can only effect the present and future, not the past.  Crying after the fact does nothing but make you weaker.

i get the complaints but the constant whining over crap that can't change and knee jerk reactions have long since gotten boring.

as for the give uppers i would assume fantasy football helps determine the bandwagons they ride. you all know i love the Lions but my fantasy team is always a close second which is nice because they usually provide at least 1 or 2 options come playoff time to root for.

Until it changes or the idiots in charge of putting that season together are gone and there is a reason to think anything will be different.   Since that hasnt happened I choose to live in the reality of right now, and that is a team with gaping holes in many different areas, 7 starters as free agents, a team with no money currently with which to resign them (or anyone to replace them with), and a GM whose 4 year track record in the draft is nothing short of flat out awful.  That's reality, not bitching.  

 Those still crying over last year at this point are whiners.

And you homers wearing honolulu blue and silver blinders are delusional.   But for some inexplcable reason you feel some rightous superiority to call anyone not praising the glory of this franchise, fresh off an awesome 4-12 season that they are whiners.  You actually said in that post that "crying" makes you look weak.  Haha, what a load of s#$t that statement is.  Cause my view, and many others, is that trying to pretend that all is good with this franchise and things are headed in the right direction just make those people look flat out stupid.

Spare us the lecture Socrates, nobody wants or needs to hear it.   I dont know what your definition of winner is but I'll bet it doesnt include teams in last place in their division, a 4-12 record, and fours years where we have failed to be even one of the better teams in this league.  Let's not do the win over the Tebow Broncos or this years win over Seattle as your arguement to try and disprove that statement again either.  The Broncos were horrible when we beat them and anyone who thinks the week 17 Lions could beat the week 17 Seahawks is a complete imbecile.

And I have said that I will give the Detroit Clown Show the opportunity to undue the damage they have done and put the team on the right track.  But I dont think those in charge have done what you advocate.  I dont believe they have learned and therefore we wont be better going forward, and until I see a whole helluva lot more than what I've seen in the four years prior I wont be signing the praises of this team not one damn bit.

I'll be rooting for whoever the Lions play against this year. They deserve to suffer for what they did to the fans last season. I gave up on Shocky and BS a long time ago. Only a nice drink of hemlock will improve those guys. I think giver uppers, I'd not the worst thing in sports ( the fair weather fan), must switch to some other sport. For Shocky and BS may I suggest pro bowling, TBB, I'm about an hour from you this week. Universal Orlando beckons for the family.

Sad to say, Meow and zwic make the most sense on this board. I can't defend this team. I've tried for years. I just look foolish down here in TN defending Detroit.......Nice to know slappies still exisist but I'm not one of them.


Stafford is a good QB.....Calvin is a monster.....Suh is good....Other then that, the Lions suck!!!!!!!!!! We have 3 posistions covered and need 20 other posistions filled with better players......

The scheme and coaching blow, Millen blows, WCF blows......Sorry slappies, were Detroit and this has been the MO since WCF has been here. It will remain as such till a Ford Doesn't even own one share in the company.
