Sad to say, Meow and zwic make the most sense on this board. I can't defend this team. I've tried for years. I just look foolish down here in TN defending Detroit.......Nice to know slappies still exisist but I'm not one of them.

Stafford is a good QB.....Calvin is a monster.....Suh is good....Other then that, the Lions suck!!!!!!!!!! We have 3 posistions covered and need 20 other posistions filled with better players......

The scheme and coaching blow, Millen blows, WCF blows......Sorry slappies, were Detroit and this has been the MO since WCF has been here. It will remain as such till a Ford Doesn't even own one share in the company.
I've been one of the most critcal fans on this board.  I am not one to sugar coat anything when it comes to a team that i am a fan of.  EVERY team is going to have those fans who look past the deficiencies in a team and try to see the positive in it all.  When you are on a Lions chat board -- OF COURSE, you are going to have quite a few guys like that.

Simple fact is -- it is doesn't have to be one extreme or the other.  The Lions finished 4-12 last year, but they have way too much talent at key position to be a 4-12 team.  While I am not a huge fan of Schwartz or Mayhew -- it doesn't change the fact they took over a 0-16 team and in 3 years took them to the playoffs.

Detroit's problem is they NEED playmakers in the secondary.  No amount of pressure on the QB is going to matter if you don't have anyone in the secondary to make plays.  They can't continue to ignore the secondary.  They need to either find a RB who can make something out of nothing, or they need to upgrade the OL and bring in run blockers.  You can't have an OL who cannot open holes and have a RB who rarely makes people miss.

Lastly -- the scheme and coaching is the same as the one who took over an 0-16 team and in 3 years had them at 10-6 and people picking them as a dark horse for the Super Bowl.  While lsat year was brutal to watch -- finish 4-12 was the best case scenario, as they got a really high pick and will more than likely get multiple players who can step in immediately and improve the team.

I agree Millen blows, but the guy hasn't been with the Lions in years -- get over it already.  WCF has spent the max he is allowed to due to the cap, he built the Lions a new stadium downtown and has basically zero to do with anything that goes on with the team otherwise, so knocking WCF is silly.

I understand those of you who want to continue to piss and moan about last year -- I was right there with you.  There wasn't a single thing about last year that I would like to remember, but it is over now and the Lions have a chance to turn things around quite quickly with the high picks and talent they already have on the roster.  4-12 teams don't usually have the Best WR in the game, a QB like Stafford or a DT tandem with the talent of Suh/Fairley.  One draft can take a team from bad to really good -- take a look at the Seahawks and what they did in a year.

We are not the Patriots we are not the Steelers, we are not even the Bears so I can get the guys that blister the moves Detroit makes, I even agree with some of them and it makes the arguements and opinions better but thats just my take

Well once upon a time the Patriots were pretty much the Lions. I remember always having hopes of maybe making the playoffs and they'd go out and win 3,4, 5 games. Those were the good years lol. Similiar to the Lions lately...have a good year, expect to improve the next year but noooooo....I never gave up on them(life long mass w hole, they're 'my' team!) but I did become more of a fan of the game. This was the 80's so I liked watching the 9ers and Giants, or great players like Elway and Marino...I appreciated excellence/dominance which doesn't seem to be very popular these days. Everyone hates lol. But it did get to the point I figured I'd never see them (Pats) win a SB. Same with the Sox....So if teams like the Pats and Saints can win SBs, anything is possible. Sticking by them just makes finally winning that much sweeter. I'm not a very emotional guy but the first SB win and the Sawx breaking 'the curse' both brought a tear to my eye lol. 30 years of heartbreaks before that.

1 thing you'll never see me do is rip on a fan for rooting for a 'crap' team.(well maybe the Jets, I'm only human) If anything I have total respect for those fans.(again, cept for the Jets!)  I used to be one and I'm sure at some point, eventually, waaaay down the roadTongue out I will be again

Good luck next season.

Since that hasnt happened I choose to live in the reality of right now, and that is a team with gaping holes in many different areas, 7 starters as free agents, a team with no money currently with which to resign them (or anyone to replace them with), and a GM whose 4 year track record in the draft is nothing short of flat out awful.  That's reality, not bitching.
No one is denying that.  This is a rebuilding year.  You contributions concerning the salary cap are appreciated.  There are some here though who do nothing but puke out the same old tired line.

You actually said in that post that "crying" makes you look weak.  Haha, what a load of s#$t that statement is.  Cause my view, and many others, is that trying to pretend that all is good with this franchise and things are headed in the right direction just make those people look flat out stupid.
No one is pretending all is good.  Only difference is most are looking at what can be done to get better instead of crying that no matter what is done and who we get that it will always be bad.  And yes crying always makes anyone look weak in any facet of life.  Besides, If we want to listen to that that kind of crap we have women for that.

I dont know what your definition of winner is but I'll bet it doesnt include teams in last place in their division, a 4-12 record,
A winner never gives up.  They dont let a bad play or a bad game or even a bad season sway them.  They dont let it effect what they do going forward.  They dont sit in the middle of the field and crying about how bad they suc.  They pick them selves up and try to figure out how to get better.

And I have said that I will give the Detroit Clown Show the opportunity to undue the damage they have done and put the team on the right track.  But I dont think those in charge have done what you advocate.  I dont believe they have learned and therefore we wont be better going forward, and until I see a whole helluva lot more than what I've seen in the four years prior I wont be signing the praises of this team not one damn bit.
Agreed.  Noone that I know of thinks they are.  That does not mean getting better players cant make a difference.  The coaches and management will not last too much longer, but it would be nice to have some talent for the new regime to work with.

Agreed. Our Stadium and practice facilities are top-notch, and we spend to the cap every year. Not much more you can ask for from an owner, is there?

He's putting new turf on a 10 year old field, and he's paid both Best and Harrison for almost two years now, even though neither have been near the field. WCF is doing his part, what else do you think he needs to do, since it's apparently his fault we're losing?

The Lions continue to disappoint and the fans continue to make excuses!! We've seen this song and dance to many times before, pro bowlers getting cut or traded because they don't fit someone elses scheme. Your riding the fence there big guy and what your basically stating is your okay with the Lions being a schedule filler and anyone else is a loser or whiner for demanding better. Either you believe in the GM and HC can lead the Organization to the promise land or their going to leave it in such a mess that we'll get to see history repeat itself once again. Its kinda like an old saying... "chit or get off the pot", Millen did neither.

I don't understand. Those that constantly point out the negatives about "your" team....why don't you move on? Why are you still here bashing the Lions and repeating (over and over) how bad they are and how this person and that person truly suck? Pick another team and leave the Lions' boards!!! How hard is that? Muzz is planning his move to the Seahawks board.....I hope some of you other constant complainers are making similar plans. (I've got big money that says that those "fans" will biotch about their 'new' team as well!)

BTW.....is there anyone who is dumb enough not to know that the negative nellies and giver-uppers will be back as soon as the Lions win? We call that front-running where I come from.

Meow may be a little more negative then most, but at least he contributes.  He has been the salary cap guru.  Saves me tons of time an effort of having to research the numbers.  There are some here though that contribute nothing whatsoever and either bash, antogonize or plain whine.  Those are the ones that should just find another team to follow.  I dont understand what the big deal is.  People can be a fan of any team they wish.  And why take the poor performance to heart and be so upset 2 months after the season is over.  The way I look at it is I did not lose a thing.  I am not a player or coach on the team.  I just happen to be a fan.  If they stink then they stink, not really going to effect my life as I am not the one losing the games.

TPaul, did you hack MikeD's password?
no one hacked my account.

it is really the honest truth.  i may be very critical of the Lions, especially in 2012, as they underperformed all year long.  i may despise Schwartz and Mayhew.  these are still the same guys who took over an 0-16 team and in 3 years had them in the playoffs.

don't get me wrong -- i still think Mayhew is in over his head and he has been brutal drafting after the 1st round for Detroit.  i still think Schwartz has lost control of the team and I am not sure if he is a coach who can take them to the promise land.

doesn't change the fact -- detroit is only a couple players away from being a playoff team and a very dangerous playoff team to boot.   they need a couple guys in the back 7 that are PLAYMAKERS.  they need to a running back that can break off big chunks of yards.  what they don't need to do is waste another top draft pick on a wide receiver.

mayhew has this draft to get it right or his time with detroit will be done.  they won't make the same mistake they did with millen, letting him over stay his welcome.  if detroit can hit on 2 or 3 draft picks in this draft -- they could easily go from 4-12 to 10-6 again.

MikeD is making a lot of sense on this thread.
He and I dont always see eye to eye on matters, but his take on it here hits the spot.

Now to Old Lion......
A winner never gives up.  They dont let a bad play or a bad game or even a bad season sway them.  They dont let it effect what they do going forward.  They dont sit in the middle of the field and crying about how bad they suc.  They pick them selves up and try to figure out how to get better.
I could not have put it any better. Too many think winning is a after effect. It's not. It's a state of mind.
Your comment made me remember back in 1999 when I was coaching women's softball. We were playing in a Tournament a month before the State tournament to get ready. The Tourny was in Traverse City. We had traveled all the way up there for it and were in the finals, each team had lost one game so winner take all.
We were in the 7th and last inning, bottom of, we had a one run lead. Our opponents had runners on third and second, 2 outs. The batter hit an easy lazy pop fly into right field, our RF, who had literally made this easy catch a thousand times, settled under it..... the bal lhit the heal of her glove and dropped..... we lost by 1.
Our 3baseman, had put off leaving for a funeral by one day to play first, was deveasted. Our RF was devasted. Our entire team had to quickyl come to grips with havng the game won and the next second...lost.
We left a totally disheartened team, we took a week off from pratice and everyone got back together the following weekend for practice. We put the incident behind us.... worked hard.... got our heads back on straight.....
And 4 weeks after a dropped pop fly cost us a championship........
.... we dominated the entire State Tournament Class B Womens Division. Winning 5 games en route to the Championship by a total of 91 runs scored - 14 given up. That started that team on a State tournament tear that took us to Class A womens, finshing 2nd twice and 1st once in the next 3 years, finally to OPEN CLASS Womens, 2 State titles in 3 years. And numerous appearances in National titles tournaments from Class B to OPEN....... never won a National title.... but finished 3rd once and 2nd once.

Thats how winners react. They take a bad situation and use it to fuel their drive for some thing better.

Thanks for your comments and reviving that fond memory for me.

Anytime.

That actually comes from real life experiences for me as well.  I was not just trying to preach.  I wont bore everyone with the details but I have been on many teams that have won championships at various levels and some that have had those same crucshing defeats you mention.  Some of those teams that won had no business winning and conversely other that lost should have won blindfolded.  A certain level of talent is always needed, but in the end its about how they handle pressure and adversity that determines the final outcomes and future performances.

I told myself i'd quit watching the Lions last year but every sunday i watched or kept track of the score. MikeD has it right by far the worst secondary i've ever seen in detroit... i would say the 0-16 secondary is right on par with this one. I will support and watch the lions through thick and thin. We need some back seven help BADLY. However in the draft for the first round gotta go de or the tackle from texas a&m. Not sold on Milliner, second round get a safety that can stay healthy please, no more cheerleader Delmas. Lots of holes and not enough cap space. No matter what i stay loyal and don't flip flop, at least i got the tigers and wolverines. I don't really care though i'm retired now:)
