A lot of people are going to hate what I'm going to say. I'm not going to trash Phil or Mike or Jim or Jerry.
With the word coming down that our beloved owner Jerry Buss, could be close to the end of his life with terminal cancer... a lot of things become clearer to me with the D'Antoni situation.
Doctor Buss has been sick for awhile... even though the media never reported it, you'd have to assume that the family knew this was going on and made a conscious decision to keep it on the downlow.
Since Jeannie and Phil are dating... you'd have to assume Phil would know, of course Jim and Jeannie knew as well about the sickness.
It's no secret Phil and Jim have never gotten along. Jerry Buss was the buffer between Phil and Jeannie... and Jim. Those three could work together as long as Doctor Buss was in charge of everything.
When the Lakers struggled and replaced Mike Brown at the beginning of the season... the obvious choice with our roster was Phil Jackson... but Phil Jackson, knowing that Doctor Buss was really sick and there was a reasonable assumption that he would not be alive much longer. Jim Buss was never going to hire Phil and Phil would never work under the brother of the woman he was involved with. All of them had to come up with a plausible story or scenario that would ensure Phil would not take this job and would leave no doubt that he would ever take the job in the future without giving away the secret about Doctor Buss's health.
I'm not much for conspiracy theories, but it seems to be... Phil was never ever coming here. This meeting at the house... never happened. It was contrived by all of them PJ, Jeannie and Jim to keep as much of the public from knowing about Dr. Buss's illness until they were ready to make it public. It was always D'Antoni.... from the very minute they fired Brown
There was just no way to ge the public to believe Phil wouldn't come back unless they contrived something like this.
Obviously D'Antoni has not been the right choice... but we have to disavow ourselves from thinking Phil was ever in the running.
I hope Dr. Buss either recovers from his illness or the suffering ends soon. Godspeed Doc!!!
My understanding, from some L.A. Times article recently, is that Jeanie and Jim haven't spoken in months.

Interesting conspiracy theory but I'm not buying it. Phil and his minions (His agent, Brian Shaw, Kurt Rambus) were very upset after the Lakers picked Dantoni. He clearly wanted the job, and thought he had a good chance at it. Rambus went out of his way to bash Dantoni and his style in the days after Phil. And all of Phil's media guys, Bresnahan from the LA Times, i.e, bashed the Dantoni hiring process.
Which leads me to the conclusion Phil wanted this, maybe, he wanted it so badly, because he wanted to win 1 more for Jerry Buss.
