And then the Padres screw themselves by shipping off Rizzo in favor of Yonder Alonso.Undecided

I really like Andrew Cashner... (who was apart of the Rizzo deal) but he can't stay healthy

Dude can hit 98-99 with ease on his fastball and his change up is only 88 MPH..

But his health issues make Buch look like Iron man...

3 years for victorino v. 4 years for crawford...huge difference?

YES on this one.  Huge difference in dollars.  Crawford also damaged goods!

2 years for beckett v. 2 years for dumpster....same

Yup.  BUT Beckett had to go.  Clearly he had to go.  You won't see me defending Dempster, though.  He's awful.

5 years for agonz is obviously a big difference to the one year for napoli....but that was even going to be a 3 year deal til the Red Sox got lucky

This is the key.  AGonz seems to be rapidly declining or suffering some sort of malaise in Boston.  Unloading him before he went into full "Teixeira decline mode" was a great move.  Napoli on a 1-year deal is perfect.  He'll be looking to prove something.  That was their best move of the offseason.

They save a ton of money over the life of these contracts...on players who they won't really miss.  I'm not upset at all.

I didn't realize Cashner was part of that deal.

I like him too, but yeah, what you said.

victorino isn't damaged goods?

20M/year for what crawford might bring >>> 13M/year for what victorino might bring

both are terrible contracts

I'm not talking about second guessing the move to get rid of those guys...I'm talking about spending nearly the same amount of money and failing to upgrade the team...don't want to waste the money?  That's cool, suck and have a low payroll...want to be a better team in 2013?  Don't spend beckett's money on a guy like dempster...that's my point

They lucked into only getting napoli for 1 year....without the hip problem, he was not a 3/39 player...the team did not upgrade here...and only didn't get into a bad contract situation by sheer luck

Their conclusion was that he's a rapidly declining player.

Maybe he bounces back, but those 4 year trends are awful.

With all these new age stats...its fun to look at, but its all easier to paint a narrative you want

They probally failed to mention that while A Gon O-Swing keeps going up. His O-Contact rate is also rising.

He is actually Hitting a higher percentage of pitches outside the K zone. So he is not actually swinging in missing..

Infact his Overall Contact rate is rising, and Strikeswing Percentage is lowering...

His Line Drive rate went up, and his GB rate went down,,

Which are all good signs... Its not the signs of a hitter who is drawing walks or hitting for power. But its a good sign in terms Batting average Potenial...

I saw a graphic on MLB network the same day they had that Gonzalez thing that the Red Sox increase in payroll during this offseason was the most in all of MLB.

Taking that into consideration, I completely agree with Uno.

Seems to me they spent a ton of dollars on mediocre players.

CC is a show that of any you'll see, doesn't have an agenda. It's strictly a numbers crunching show, and conclusions are drawn based on those numbers.

Gonzalez is still a good player obviously, but is he still an elite hitter going forward?

Based on the trends they presented, I doubt it.

Yeah, might have been just more efficent to actually give Hamilton a big contract.

and go for more Low cost high upside guys.. Though Napoli is actually cheaper deal at the moment.

I think they would've had to offer a significantly bigger deal to get Hamilton to Boston though.

I have no evidence, I just doubt, considering where he ended up, he really would've gone there without an offer that was FAR superior to the others.

I questioned them last year, too.  I figured they were a playoff team given the roster, though.  Are you going to pound your chesst over the Yankees getting their asses handed to them by Detroit?  They beat Baltimore in a short series and then got pummelled by Detroit.  Does that mean you won the argument about last year's team?

I agree as a Yankees fan, anything other than the WS title is a let down but you kind of left off the fact that last years old, poor pitching, no bullpen having team won the most games in the AL.

Yes, they went ice cold in the playoffs and looked like shit**** but they did win more games than any other team in the AL...without the best closer on the planet
