Pass the Blount

We put free agent running back LeGarrette Blount in our sights with the added point of view of a Buccaneers writer to lend some insight.

Calling Blount a "bruiser" nearly requires a "no pun intended" to follow. Mainly because of the infamous face punch on a Boise State player who got in his face after a game. It got him suspended most of his senior season and resulted in his falling out of the draft the following year.

Blount rebounded from the incident and what looked to have ruined a promising NFL career when as an undrafted rookie, he ran for 1007 yards in Tampa Bay. The Bucs were just taking a chance on him and he made the most of it.

What's interesting from the [Raiders]' perspective is his offensive coordinator that season was none other than Raiders new offensive coordinator, Greg Olson. Blount ran for 871 yards the following season under Olson as well. It was last season with Olson gone and the Bucs with rookie phenom, [Doug Martin] that Blount fell off. Now he needs a fresh start and a reunion with his former OC could be just the ticket.

I like this idea. very similiar to Bush. This is the brusing back that we could use and I believe get for decent money. We don't need him to be a 1200 yard rusher.

I think it would be a great pickup for the Raiders.  I like Blount and the way he runs.

I thought the loss of Mike Bush was one of our biggest blunders a season ago...I'd be all for bring in this dude. Similar running style and we all know we can only count on McFragile for 9 games anyway...

I'd love to have Blount. He's a backup who can carry a game.

Good candidate.  I also saw that Turner may get released by Atlanta.  He is a big hard runner as well if the price were right.

I wouldn't mind Blount. I think Felix Jones could be a vaulable asset as well. Who knows if they will have interest in re signing Mike Goodson, but it would be nice to have more than one capable back in the backfield, especially moving forward. Mostly because we know McFragile wont stay healthy and they need help in the return game, even if Jacoby Ford another guy who seems to consistantly get hurt.

Speaking of Michael Bush how long does anybody think Chicago is gonna hang onto him now that they have gone with a pass happy offensive attack with Trestman. Now Bush can catch the ball out of the backfield but paying him nearly 4 million a year to back up at running back for a coach who doesnt believe in running the ball, doesnt make much sense, especially when they better figure out how to block up front.

hells yes!! definetly not a high priced free agent, the connection is there with olson, we need a bruiser and he shouldnt cost us more than some of the players we had to pay last year that didnt even last past the first two games regardless of position (Shawntae Spencer anyone, anyone)..and devil hits on a good point not too sure wat to make of Mike Goodson, dont see us being able to retain his services its possible but i think unlikely..as long as blount doesnt punch somebody in training camp its lookin like hes guna be wearin some silver and black..worse case, if mcfadden gets hurt again which i dread more than anything, he could definetly fill the void and give some solid production

I think it all depends on price. I wouldn't mind hearing that the Raiders were kicking the tires on Michael Turner to see if he could come in and be the Tyrone Wheatley or Zack Crockett to Darren McFadden's Napoleon Kaufman or Charlie Garner...

LeGarrette Blount might not be bad either as he has a bit less mileage, but he does seem to have fallen pretty quickly. Not sure what happened there.

Either way, a short yardage or change of pace back is need just as much as a quality backup. When was the last time you felt like every time the Raiders got a 3rd and short or inside the 2 yard line that they were guaranteed to put it in? For me it was back in 2003.

As with many players in the NFL, it depends on the price. As everybody has already written, he could be a very good insurance option for when McFadden goes down (yes when, not if). With running backs being a dime a dozen, he should not command as large of a contract as Bush. It would also allow us to address other areas with our few draft picks.

Well he's a restricted FA so RM would have to pony up a trade offer or picks for him. We have two 7th round picks and Blount was hardly used last year so give it up and get the beast over here. If DMAC gets hurt he can carry the load easily. Now that Taiwan Jones is moving to CB per RM in his interview at the combine, Goody can come back as 3rd string or fight with Blount. Devil, I already have seen reports about the getting rid of Bush before the season ended...id love him back.

RM will most likely re-sign Mike Goodson and pick a RB late in the draft. One player that intrigues me is Marcus Lattimore. He is still currently injured but if your looking for great potential late in the draft he would be a good pickup. We took a late round flier on Bush who at the time was still injured and rehabbed his whole first year and it turned out pretty well.
