What's your opinion on the "New Big East"?

March 1, 2013 1:13 pm

With the latest reports stating that the the "Catholic 7" and leaving, but carrying the Big East name with them, I'm curious what everones thoughts are on this more or less adjusted conference.

With what is proposed the new Big East would carry Marquette, St. Johns, Seton Hall, Villanova, Georgetown, Providence, and DePaul, while picking up Butler and Xavier right away. Reports also seem to be leaning towards Creighton joining next season as well.

So the question is, whats your view on the new conference? Please explain.

I'm voting favorable.  It seems to be what the Catholic 7 have wanted all along...an all bball conference.  They now have it and to me it looks like a competitive league.

I would love for this conference to stop at 9 or 10 teams. A full round robin schedule will do a lot to enhance the commeraderie and rivalries in this new conference.

I'm in favor of it myself. As a Cards fan, it was an honor and a privilage to be associated with the Big East this past few years but the Big East was always a basketball conference and should go back to it's roots IMO. It saves these schools from having to deal with any further drama associates with the football schools getting pirated, bouncing in and out and making the the conference look like a luaghing stock. I have great respect for the Catholic 7 and bringing in the other Catholic schools only makes them stronger.

I'll miss the BE for sure but we are moving on to the ACC because Louisville is building something really special in other sports besides basketball so it was only fitting to join a conference that can support those as well.

Good luck Big East and all of the schools staying in it! Hope it stays viable for another 20 years!

My thought exactly. While I wish that all conferences were 10 teams, I understand they won't be with the $$$ that football makes from conference title games. But since this is a basketball only league, football influences aren't there to force a need for more teams. To me, the only way to crown a conference champion is a true round robin format.

So will this end up eventually being like the Catholic league in a lot of big cities?  OK, but not on the same level as the public HS's?

Whoever voted ruins the Big East name is stupid. Sorry if I insulted you but it's true. The Big East has more original/really old members in the Catholic 7 and it was originally just a basketball league. Shame on you that voted that as it was obviously all this latest BS the football schools did that ruined it and outside UConn and maybe Cincy(newer) where is the Big East spirit on the other side?

Answer: NOWHERE!

this is a very good thing. It keeps the league's spirit alive as a power basketball conference and back to it's roots.

Wheres the Uconn-Cuse? Pitt-Nova? Gtown-Cuse? Pitt-Uconn? Exactly there is none. I don't care who gets the name, the big east dies after the tourney this year is over. They got a nice conference set up there, but they are not and never will be the big east. Hell the ACC and all of it's stolen schools still isn't the big east. There will never be another big east, regardless where the name goes. This conference is dead.

I would think this conference is going to 12 teams in two years. St. Louis, Creighton and somebody else...

LOL, the football schools made the Big East look like a laughing stock?

Um, no. How about--the basketball only schools like Providence, Depaul, St. John's and Seton Hall are what made the Big East look like a laughing stock. The Big East was the only BCS Conference with basketball only schools, and a ton of them at that--yet, the basketball only schools were able to vote on football decisions even though they don't even have a football program to begin with.

The real Big East programs (Louisville, Pitt, Syracuse, UConn, WVU, Rugters, South Florida, and Cincy) should have had their opinions weighed more heaviily than the half-ass programs that made the conference look like a joke.

Sorry if I come across as rude to you, but your opinion is so idiotic that I had to say something.

Looks good.
It will be even better with some non-Catholic schools like Duke and any other ACC remnants when it's done falling apart too.

They ought to just call it the Catholic League. It will be the Big East without the "Big"

The Big East name should remain with the only conference that has had 3 teams in the final four. Georgetown, St Johns, and Villanova.

This conference of Bball  only schools is going back to its roots and will be great once again.

This should be a solid conference. They need to add at least 3 more teams and get to 10.

I tend to agree that they will go to 12 in a short period adding St. Louis and either St. Joseph's, VCU or UMASS. I think this will make the new Big East a basketball power (assuming they also add Butler, Xavier and Creighton) earning 5-6 bids a year.

The "old" Big East would likely still be a multi-bid conference with the additions of Temple and Memphis to go with UCONN and Cincinnnati.

This would be a crushing blow to the A-10, but they'd probably add George Mason and would still have 2 of the 3 (St. Joe's, VCU, UMASS) along with George Washingtong, La Salle, Charlotte and other current members, so they'd probably still have a legit shot of sending more than 1 team in most years as well.

I'm not sure what to think.  I think the Big East died when Pitt, Cuse and WVU all packed their bags.  The loss of BC, VT and Miami wasn't much of a blow to the hoops side of things.  What made the BE great was the number of great teams and rivalries over the years:

Cuse-GTown
Nova-GTown
St. John's-GTown
Pitt-Nova
Cuse-Nova
Pitt-WVU
UL-WVU
Pitt-UConn
Cuse-UConn
Nova-UConn
Cuse-BC

Those are just some of the main ones off the top my head - and of those 11, only 2 will remain in-conference and thus regular games.

That being said - this smaller 9 or 10 team conference of all basketball and pretty regional schools is a whole lot better than the monstrosity that the Big East was becoming.

Where they screwed up was not creating a better voting system that gave the non-football schools less power than the all sports schools.  If they had done that, the Big East could have easily become something like:

Football
BC
Cuse
Pitt
WVU
VT
Miami
Rutgers
Uconn
Louisville
Cincinnati
Penn State
Notre Dame/ UMD or UVA

Non-football
Nova
GTown
St. Johns
Providence
Seton Hall

Sure it's still a large conference with 15 to 17 teams (depending on the PSU/ND or ACC teams issue) but that would have stayed one of the top 2 conferences and with the exception of Miami, been very regional.  Whereas now you have teams way out in the flatlands.

I'm totally good with it. The Big East was created for Basketball and epitomized what hoops was / is all about in this talent & tradition rich area. I say, let these founding members retain the Big East name as we wish them well - as I am sure they will continue to deliver us a quality brand of basketball.

As a lifelong Louisville resident & fan - it has been a privilege to have been a part of this conference and offer our contribution to its success.

I totally forgot Richmond and Dayton as remaining A-10 members, although Dayton is a strong candidate to be the C-7's 12 member eventually so if it played out that way the New Big East would contain Georgetown, Providence, St. John's, Marquette, DePaul, Seton Hall, Villanova, Butler, Xavier, Creighton, St. Louis and Dayton... that's a very solid conference.

The A-10, while severely hurt, would still have VCU, St. Joseph's, UMASS, Richmond, George Washington, La Salle and others and if they add Old Dominion and George Mason or some other combination of teams they will be a 12 team league (with 2 additions) and still almost always be a multi-bid league even without Butler, Temple, Xavier, St. Louis, Dayton and Charlotte (who I just rememberd was going to CUSA next season).
