Ravens sign flacco to long term deal

March 2, 2013 11:42 pm

Congrats to Flacco, he is the opposite of Peyton Manning. He wins when it counts and is just very good in the regular season. As far as the 7 million cap hit in 2013, that is great news for Raven fans short term. Now long term becomes tricky because as other have stated, you eventually have to pay the man. For example, let's say the give him a 24 million dollar signing bonus over 6 years that equals a cap hit of 4 million per year for years 2013 through 2018. I assume since he is only a cap hit of 7 million, then that means his 2013 salary is only 3 million.

The big question becomes how it is laid out in later years. If he gets 120 million plus and only 7 million hits the cap in 2013, then that leaves 113 million to hit the cap the next 5 years, in my scenario, we know 20 million is allocated from the 2013 bonus to years 2 through 6 of the contract. So, that leaves 93 million more to be allocated over the next 5 years.

I would love to know the cap number projections now for years 2 through 6. They can keep restructuring, but each year they do a bonus, it adds to the previous bonus cap hit. This become risky business. Gof forbid the man can no longer play football for any reason, but if so, all of that cap money would become dead money. That could kill the Ravens for years to come. Either way, as others have said, eventually all of that 120 million will hit the cap. What happens when it does?

Maybe not this year or the next, but eventually the bill collector comes calling.  Congrats on signing him though.
100% true. The thing is that they can just extend him again and turn the money into another signing bonus and add guaranteed money to spread that contract out further to make the cap hit more reasonable.

They had no choice toplay him this money. There is no other qb out there worthy of a starting spot. He had the Ravens by the balls and they had to cave. Is he worth that money? Absolutely not but unless someone else good was out there, they had no choice to pay him.

<br />I agree, but Flacco is in his prime so if they want to restructure his deal, my guess is he will want even more money. In other words, he is not declining yet and I don't expect he will be declining so for them just to guarantee his contract may not be enough. he may want 25 million a year 2 or 3 years from now to restrcuture.

For all those that keep saying winning a Super bowl doesn't make you elite or special, that may be true, but it sure makes you rich.

Steelcity123pit.....What exactly are you saying...it makes absolutely NO SENSE.......the Ravens had every intention of signing Joe...they had no other options...meaning they were not exploring anything else or anybody else. I can now lump you into the sack of people who don't understand the salary cap thing.

Can't wait to see Joe Moneybags go down in flames next year with the big head that comes from winning a Super Bowl. All of the teams they play will be gunning for them. Lewis and probably Reed will be gone. The unibrow is no way worth the kind of money they are shelling out for him. He will not be able to carry the team as will be expected of him.

He just needs to get us to the playoffs. Everything else falls into place once we're there (with him at the helm). I'll take him over (Peyton) Manning any day for that reason. I'll take him over Brady. Brady goes 18-0 and can't finish the job; can't win the sb with that record going in. Brady needs to cheat to win it all. Flacco takes a 10-6 team to the promised land. Eli, same thing, all on the road for him though. Hell, (Peyton) Manning excels in the regular season like no one I've ever seen, but can not finish the job, unless he plays against a scrub like Rex Grossman. I'll take a qb that is questionable in the regular season but excels in the post season over the vice-versa option any day. Let's not forget one more important piece of information here: Flacco plays awesome at home. He has for a long time now. He's wishy washy on the road, but still does manage to win enough of those games to get us to the playoffs. That's all I ask. I'm not like greedy Belicheat and have to win every game.

Flacco consistently carves up the Steelers and will continue to do so for a long time.
Especially when the Ravens meet the Steelers in the playoffsSurprised.

Damn...you Steeler fans are really concerned about Flacco aren't you? Actually I'm finding it as SCARED of Flacco. They see Joe on the rise and the Steelers on the fall.

Ravin   congrats  dumbest post of the day.  Why is a coach greedy if he wants to win.  Sure Pats went 18-0  and lost to the Giants  who outplayed them, no shame in that.  If Denver's defender doesnt blow a wide open bomb  then this is a moot point. Try acting like the other respectable Raven posters  and not like the kid or bandwagoneer you sound like

Because he is greedy and a cheat. You don't have to be greedy to be a great coach. Enough said.

Yes Flacco carves up the Steelers.  How many offensive TD's did Flacco generate against the Steelers old defense in two games this year?  I think Charlie Batch beat him in Baltimore.  You are right he just carves the Steelers up!

3 out of 4...Someone has very short term memory!  Congrats on your Super Bowl win, great run.  Overall though Flacco's record against the Steelers is not great including 0-2 in playoffs.

Ehh, he's 5-7 overall, including playoffs, with three of those loses coming in 2008 as a rookie out of Delaware against probably the best Steelers defense since the 70s.

In terms of Flacco vs the Steelers, the loses weren't all on him.  Outside of 2008, he's actually played very well against the Steelers defense (although the 2010 playoff game was bad).  He's also 3-1 in Pittsburgh over the last three season so that home game advantage doesn't apply to Joe like it would others.

Over his career, Flacco has been "meh" against Pittsburgh (stats and wins).  Over recent history, with an idea about future performance, he's been good.

I agree with some of what you say RR1 but last year against as a lot of Ravens fans have stated before a aging defense, if not for a punt return, he would probably have been 0-2.  He mustered two TD's one on a long Ray Rice run immediately following a turnover, so all he did was hand the ball off. In the win against the Steelers in Pittsburgh, he generated no TD's.  He is a good QB, but just based on last year, he threw for (Not going to look it up) around 350 yards in two games and one TD against the Steelers , and lost at home for the first time in 15 games to the Steelers and their third string QB. I like Flacco, think he has a lot of upside, but he does not play his best against the Steelers.  He has some good games. but recent history (last year), he generated 1 drive for a TD in two games.  Two with the long Rice run.
