UNC vs. FSU Game Thread

UNC hosts FSU at the Dean Dome today.  The game is on CBS with their NBA crew of Marv Albert and Steve Kerr.

The first time these teams played UNC was off to an 0-2 start in the conference and in desperate need of a road win.  The Heels went to FSU and got a 77-72 win.  That game was considered a "must win" game at the time.

While today's game is not a "must win", the Heels need it to keep pace with Virginia and a revitlatilized Duke team for a chance at 2nd place in the conference.

FSU has not played up to their potential this season, and the Heels have looked much better after going small.  Marcus Paige and Dex have continued to improve and the effect on the offense is obvious.  With a tough road game at Maryland and Duke on the horizon the Heels will need to keep their focus in this one, or FSU could surprise them. 

Not  that it really matters, but a win today combined with all the losses in the Top 25 could propel UNC back into the rankings.

The best thing about today's game is that it's on CBS, so I get it up here in Canada.

Looking forward to seeing how this small line-up performs against Florida State, who are long and athletic.  I think they may also lead the ACC in blocks (though could be wrong).

Also of note, Justin Jackson a small forward in the Top 15 of ESPN's rankings for the 2014 class will be at the game.  I wonder if this will be the end of his recruitment, similar to what happened with Berry a couple weeks back.

tarheels will control this game from start to finish.  florida state is a below average team esp on the road.  the one area where the tarheels have been at a disadvantage is on the boards but fsu is not a good rebounding team.  heels win today 75-59

The Tarheels will take this game...FSU cannot stay with them.

just an absolute beatdown right now. hairston and bullock are hitting everything. this team is going to be a force to reckon with in the tournament.  they have improved a huge amount since that awful miami  loss.

best half so far i seen mcadoo play against stiff defense. He is balling right now.....that boy PJ though.....

Watching the guys grow into the smaller lineup is just... *kobe fist pump*. Bigger teams like FSU will still give us periodic fits but long as we keep running them and taking sounds shots? Golden. Also harder when we play man and opp teams run but stop ball def getting better. PJ is slowing putting up complete games when you include play not in the stats. Paige slowing the game down at a nice pace...would like to see a little more zip on passes. JMM has as much quicker step going left - need to see more of it.

We keep pace in the ACC and might be able to snatch the 2 spot, making a run for a favorable middle dance seed.

Oh and I only saw one replay of that Joel James phantom shot - I dont even think it went through the rim.

Am I wrong? 

So glad to see our Team playing so well today and you boys are all so happy.

another person that i overlook sometimes and its dumb of me, is reggie bullock.....other than his flame throwing 3 point ability, he has been avg about 10 boards a game lately, and he had 10 today.....he is ding everything!!!!

in live action it didnt look like it went in but on the replay you can see it gets tipped up and goes straight in

He plays such a consistent game.  I think he deserves to be mentioned in the ACC player of the year conversation, but I doubt he will get any notice.  He even had 5 assists today to go with his 20 point 10 rebound effort.  He is shooting 44% from 3pt range on the year.  He has clearly been the Heels MVP.

Man can PJ stroke, I guess this is why he was so hyped coming in as a shooter.   his shot is a thing of beauty when he has it going like this,

I remember when reggie was a freshman his jumpshot was waaaaaaaay off that yr and his sophmore yr it improved greatly....same thing with PJ....i can tell by pj's form he had a great jumpshot but it just didnt go in, but now we see how deadly he can be!!!!! Only other player that came to unc recently who had a good jumper soon as he came in until when he left  was ellington....he was one of the players i really missed when he left. but these guys are tearing it up.....funny thing is....when mcdonald first came to unc i dodnt know what type of guard he was...we had him at point, sg and sf...wasnt until his sphmore yr that i knew he was a spot up shooter and he is good. 

I was impressed with how fast we played today.  Seems like everyone has settled in on this rotation.  Would be sweet to finish the regulars season with  7 straight wins!

Played a pretty good game with some big implications outside of the win. It was great to put on a nice display in front of Justin Jackson, and probably a watching  Andrew Wiggins. I don't love that they only outscored FSU by 2 in the second half, but I prefer to bury a team by halftime instead of winning each half by 10 or so. This team has  been really fun to watch growing together lately.
