How can Gonzaga be #1?!?!

March 4, 2013 9:09 am

Gonzaga or Georgetown should be #1 in my opinion. Anyone that ranks Duke #1 makes me want to hurl. I don't care if Ryan Kelly is back. The fact that they needed 30 something points from him to barely squeak by Miami at home does not warrant them to move ahead of teams that haven't lost. Why is everyone forgetting that lost to Virginia this week? Everyone seems to have forgotten that. At home, that was game, in my opinion, Duke should've won without Kelly (considering their ranking last week) and It's not like Miami had been playing that great anyway.

Forget who the Zags have beaten look at who they have lost to and what they have done the last 2 months of the season.  They have rattled off over 10 wins in a row and more importantly have no bad losses.  Both teams they lost to were in the top 15 at the time and are both NCAA teams. Look at Duke, Miami, IU, MU, MSU, Florida and even Georgetown....they all have bad (or worse than the Zags) losses on their resumes.  The Zags have been solid and have earned the top spot.  Congrats to them.  They win out and they will get a #1 seed for the big dance and I have no problem with it.

I agree with you for the most part, although I would not consider Minnesota and Wisconsin worse losses than Illinois and Butler. Probably about the same. It doesn't matter. Georgetown is my pick for #1 as they have reeled of a bunch of wins against quality opponents. Gonzaga, deserves to be ranked high, going that long without losing Is tough.

A couple of things about Gonzaga, first instead of saying "what would Gonzaga do in the Big Ten" ask what would Indiana do in the WCC? Well, the two teams that have beaten Gonzaga have also beaten Indiana. Both of them.
So it is pretty safe to say that Indiana with a the Gonzaga schedule would not be doing better.

Is Gonzaga the best team? Probably not but there is no one else that should be ranked ahead of them at this point. Everyone else has at least two more losses.

Maybe not but Wiscosin does have the lowest RPI.....I didn't say that IU's was horrible just worse than the Zags.  Looking at it on paper the only thing about the Wisconsin loss that is surprising to me is...they beat IU on the road.  It's not like MU losing to Penn State.

But Indiana also lost to Butler and Illnois..sooo moot point. Dukies lost to Virgina, Georgetown is the closest one, but zags have matched them win for win, have less losses, and more importantly do not have a loss to a dreadful USF team. Zags deserve to be number one more than anyone this week.

How can Gonzaga be #1?!?!

With St. Mary's being ranked in the coaches poll, I could say they are 4-0 against teams currently ranked (Ok St, K St, St. Mary's x2). I've been arguing this for weeks now, but mostly to deaf ears... the fact is, that Gonzaga is one of the best teams in the country this year and are very deserving of a #1 seed.

They are 11-2 against the RPI top 100, played a strong non-con sched (and in my opinion out-played Butler but lost on a fluke play in the final seconds). They lost to 2 teams that also beat Indiana, whom many are still calling the best team in the country. They have a great front-court with 2 NBA prospects, 1 of which might even be a lottery pick, but they also have a great back-court with good shooters and passers, and decent role players that come off the bench.

I'm not saying they would win the B1G this year, or even the Big East, but I can tell you that they have all the trimmings of a Final Four contender and that they would have been very competative even in those conferences. I believe even playing in those conferences, they would have cracked the AP Top 10 at some point (I mean Minnesota, Cincinnati, VCU, Missouri and others did, including the 2 teams that beat the Zags, Butler and Illinois) but I do admit that playing in the B1G or the BE would have probably lead to a 3 or 4 seed rather than a 1, but unfortunately we'll never know. It's at least possible they would have been the surprise team this year even in one of those conferences.

They are 11-2 against the RPI top 100,
Actually Gonzaga is 12-2 against Top 100 teams. Played 14 Top 100 RPI teams.

Guess how many Indiana (so called the best team in the nation) has played? 14. And they are 12-4 against the RPI Top 100.

Give Indiana the Top overall seed if you want, because when its all said and done we will see who gets to Atlanta and who doesn't.

You mean 10-4 for Indiana, but I caught your drift. I show the Zags as being 11-2 against the top 100, but 11-2 or 12-2, that is pretty impressive nonetheless!

Yes, I meant 10-4.

And I didn't update my RPI list, and so that got me 12, but you are right, its 11. Still better than Hosers.

It's difficult to rate teams that don't overlap; that said, How many top 10 teams have the Zags played?

Go Zags!

Gotta love all this angsting by yall online armchair analysts.
RPI-this, BPI-that, blah-vs-ranked, blah-vs-unranked, crappy conference, blah blah blah.
Ha Ha Ha.
Give the bulldog kids a break, willya?
C'mon...a dinky little 5,000-student private school ranked #1 in the country?
By the AP, the Coaches and our CBS's vaunted 25+1 geniuses?
That's just too way coo!
I agree (imagine this) with the IU guy who said "let em make We're #1 t-shirts and enjoy the moment."

Go Zags!

If the Team doesn't lose it rises to the top.

A lot different than mid-majors in football.

Comes down to the Tourney anyway, being a #1-#4 does not gurantee a second weekend.

Yippie doo. Gonzaga has 1 mode Top 100 win than Indiana. Well guess what? Indiana has FOUR more wins in the top than the Zags. And that's the area that counts. Good try though.
