Joel Hanrahan saved 40 games on a 72 win team 2 years ago
---

And?  Do you not know what "trend" means?  There are certainly statistical outliers...but for everyone one exception you bring up, I'll find 5 that trend toward winning teams.

That year, 6 NL closers had 40+ saves.

The other 5 pitched for (wins)

Atlanta (89), Washington (80), SD (71), Milwaukee (96), Arizona (94)

AL, only 2 had 40+....Yanks and Tigers...97 and 95 wins....

the 40 save winners team won on average 87 games....and 75% of them were on teams that won 80 or more games....

And the top 5 in MLB all played on 89+ win teams...

Don't do it Dirt...it holds true just about every year, there are of course outliers...but as a rule of thumb, saves trend towards team wins....

Its ok to say that the Sox winning a title would rank around 6, from 1-10,  on the "Awesome" scale, if they did NOT go through the Yankees

But it became a 15 once they went through the Yankees
To say it was a 6 if the Red Sox did not go through the Yankees is a complete lie.

When the Red Sox won the WS one of the first things that came to my mind was I wish my grandfather and grandmother were here to see this. Unfortunately they lived their entire lives without witnessing the Red Sox as World Champs. Thats how it was for so many Sox fans. It had been an actual lifetime for so many of these fans to go without seeing our favorite team win it all. We were the lucky ones, we got to see it happen in our lives.

Thats what Yankees fans just can't seem to understand. Its from being "spoiled" with all those rings along the way. Personally, I know that winning in 2007 wasn't nearly as exciting, but it wasn't because the Yankees weren't there in the ALCS. It was because I had already experienced seeing my team win it all a few short years ago.

The fact that winning the WS was accomplished by going through the Yankees and how that series played out only added to it.

Ask any Red Sox fan in 2004 which would they choose:

Win the WS by playing the Indians in the ALCS

-or-

Lose the WS by humiliate the Yankees in the ALCS

I know what I am choosing, and it doesn't involve the Yankees at all.

And for the record Dirt...you might be right here..I think of Marte coming from Pitt with great numbers to Ny and pitching batting practice....and there's an alarming trend with Pitt pitchers moving to the AL....

But I think he'll be a quarter run within an ERA of 3, one way or the other...convert about 80% of his saves, and save approx 35 if healthy all year.

if that's sucking?  Then fine...run with it...

I'm with you on this one Dirtski.   Sox have not had good luck trading or acquiring free agent relievers after Keith Foulke.  (and aside from 2004 his tenure was pretty weak).

No, I ignore your stat blabbing BS, because its done nothing but fail you OVER AND OVER again every single season
----

Dirt...the stats were only to debunk your myth that saves trend towards middle of the pack or bad teams...it's 100% flat out fiction...

But, keep applying my responses to other conversations.... much better idea than admitting you're wrong.

im with down on this one.

his prediction is almost spot on with what i predicted 10 minutes prior

30+ saves, flirting with 40 would not surprise me at all, and a low 3's era

that is pretty good by most standards, not great, but upper tier of closers
