I have to disagree with that.  Imo, it makes no sense to separate streamlining depts in govt from getting them to run effeciently.  I certainly do not agree that there must be some strict "additional money first, then we can talk cuts" mantra.  Imo, that's no different than the GOP's "cuts only, then we can talk additional revenues" policy.


Nathan and I disagree.  MY local post office has had these swiped credit card machines for a decade and they still aren't up and running properly.  I have been told and I believe the psotal workers that said this is that the biggest reason is the fact that the postal service does not have the sophisticated computer system/network to use the machines. 

If the current system used in Medicare could process 4 times the number of claims and multi-task while doing it, wouldn't it make sense to purchase the machines get them working and then make your staff cuts?  You'd never know who to eliminate, what to eliminate or how many to eliminate until said system is up and running first..  Efficiency isn't about just cutting manpower/the number of jobs it's having the equipment to be more efficient in the first place. 

The optimal solution is to go through everything, piece by piece, figure out what is working, what isn't, what is needed, what isn't, where the overlap exists, what could be done away with, what could be done more effectively, what could be done more efficiently, and overhaul the whole shebang, while still giving the individual attention that makes such transitions most effective.

Nathan, I don't think you're honestly looking or understanding the two "E" WORDS--EFFECTIVE/EFFICIENT.  Maybe you don't agree with this but to be effective and efficient, you need the right equipment to do so.  Here I'll give you a blatant expample from the private sector.  Banking.  You use your debit card and buy a $100 purchase within an hour that money is subtracted from your account....oh it might say "pending" and yet no longer than 24 hours that money is gone from my accout.  And yet if I deposit a $50 birthday check from my niece,  it takes anywheere from three to five days to clear.  They rely on a very very efficient computer system to get my money out of my account to pay for something but they don't use that efficiency to put money into my account.  And yes most systems have the ability to do transactions both ways whether it the private sector, our military, or any other branch of our government.  Yet, it's not done.  And banks quite frnkly don't want to pay for the speed with deposits.  Our government sometimes doesn't have the money to be more efficient either.  And therefore not as effective.

bad example. you're comparing an electronic outbound transaction with a paper inbound transaction.

if you wrote a check instead of using a debit card for that purchase, the money would take a similar time period to be removed from your account as it takes to be deposited.

if you make a deposit with a debit card, it's won't take 3 to 5 days for the money to appear in your account.

really? that's cool, most of my other top ten shows would be animated cartoons, they rule right now. Take ur pick, King of The Hill, Simpsons, American Dad, Family Guy, Boondocks ... great rapid fire humor,  


Lately, as for dramas only watching second run shows like Gunsmoke, Fugitive, Colombo, Perry Mason, Twilight Zone .. those shows still stand the rest of time, and with a failing memory, it's like seeing them all for the first time.

Especially Colombo, his techniques are used for succesful salespeople all over the globe, if one jnows how to do it right. The key is to know when to dummy up.

I've posted time and again what needs to be done......seems some people have short memories.   I believe that the US is adequately protected militarily and should cut back on foreign bases--and considerably.   Foreign aid and special gifts to other nations must stop--that includes things like special deals to the Brazilian cotton growers.   We must stop domestic subsidies to industries and businesses.   Farm subsidies are a joke.   Keep education local--no need for a fed program.   The various systems in place make a federal bureaucracy in charge of funding for anything from schools to highways...toe the line, or they'll withhold funding.   This results in setting the fed bureau in concrete....gives them power of pursestrings and cements their unnecessary existence.  Stop the Solyndra-type nonsense.....stop the QE idiocy.   Tap into US domestic energy sources.  

This is a start.   Now, how do we accomplish this when the 2 big political parties put their party above the people?   Tough call.....we, as voters need to keep talking about the unwillingness of the party bosses to change business as usual.   We need to keep telling our fellow citizens that 20 trillion in debt is not acceptable--that the Fed boys need to trim down--that giving away tax dollars is not okay.   We need to elect REAL fiscal conservatives.....there has been a slight move in that direction with the Tea Party efforts.   I am not happy with the takeover of a large part of the Tea Party groups by the foreign interventionists.

I don't think that all partisans are drones.   I do think that many party people are unwilling to change--it's easier to blame the other guys for all the ills of the nation.   Dems blame Reps, Reps blame Dems.   Both resist downsizing of government programs and the spending they do.  Dr. Ron Paul had it right (imo) when he laid out a plan to cut fed programs.

Like drug addicts or those in AA, the biggest and first step to overcoming the addiction is to identify and admit the problem.   The spending addicts in DC trade money for votes.   They give money to friends.   They give money to sworn enemies.  What can we do?   Keep pointing out the theft--eventually it will change, or the US system will crash under its own weight.

commie, I am really surprise that you have posted a substantive discussion.  Congrats.  Now you know that I will disagree with most but let's begin.

Military cuts are fine.  Cutting back on foreign bases is good.  Foreign aid - reevaluate but not stop it.  Agree on stopping subsidies to old industries/old businesses/old farm subsidies.  New investment for new industries should continue.

We will never agree on federal standards and oversight.  I remember a time when states held back progress because of attitudes on race and poor people.  Some states still offer little help to get out of poverty by lack of funding and standards for education, healthcare and nutrition.  National standards evens out the disparity in the states.  Doesn't mean equality but a more even playing field.

QE is keeping inflation low somehow to give us a chance for better recovery and we are tapping into plenty of energy while protecting our environment.  Climate change is real and we need to be smart about energy resources.

Absolutely, commie.  A $20 trillion debt will happen no matter what changes happen.  Our real concern should be slowing the increases in debt and lowering the ratio to GDP.  Balancing the budget is a 10 year project - anything quicker will cause another recession or worse.  Even cutting bad government spending too quickly can hurt the economy and what is bad government spending will still be debated.  No matter what the right says, we still need more revenue in this solution.  You even pointed out the subsidies that need to be stopped.  Some of them are tax breaks.  Eliminating lobbyists' tax loopholes increases revenue.  At some point, the middle class needs to pay more but, first, we need to strengthen the middle class.

Here is something that you might not agree with - we need to invest in our infrastructure right now.  That includes highways, energy grid, education and innovation.  We are falling behind our competitors in these areas.  In ten years, we will have jobs that we can't fill because our workforce will not have the skills unless we improve our educational system.  Infrastructure improvements should be a partnership between government and the private sector.  The private sector is already jumping in on education and we need to find more ways to include the private sector in these improvements.
