Offseason Phillies Transactions

Heard about Young while out on the road today.   He came at a reasonable price although there is a lot of upside with Lisalverto Bonilla.  Bonilla is just 22 and was 1-1 1.35 in the bullpen at Clearwater this past season striking out 18 in 13.1 innings and then going 2-1 1.64 at Reading with 46 strikeouts in 33 innings.  He only gave up 31 hits & 1 HR in his 46.1 total innings in 2012.

So, the infield should be pretty much set:
C: Ruiz (when he returns), Kratz
1B:  Howard
2B:  Utley
3B:  Young
SS:  Rollins
Utility INF:  Galvis, Frandsen
Mayberry and Nix can also play first.

There's def upside but if he isn't moving back to the rotation and will only be a bullpen arm then i'm ok with it.  I'm sure the one who this trade pissed off the most was Michael Schwimer . . He wanted/wants out of Philly badly

After the Dodgers signed Greinke Jeff Passan tweeted the following:  "Dodgers currently have $210,130,953 in commitments for players on their roster today. The Astros have $800,000."   How is that figure for Houston even possible when the big league minumum is close to $500,000?

Okay his followup tweet says only Phil Humber at $800,000 is under contract. Looks like they still owe money to Wandy Rodriguez but he's not an Astro anymore.

Looks like the Dodgers are the new Yankees.   There was a kid like that in the neighborhood where I grew up.  No matter what kind of toy anyone got, he had to get one that was bigger, better and more expensive.  The unfortunate thing was that eventually everyone in the neighborhood hated him for it.

I'm getting excited to see how much money the Phillies have next year to spend . . I mean they should have a decent amount of money to spend.  How they spend it will be another question.

Mayberry and Nix can also play first.

If Ruf will make the roster, he could also play first

Article by Jon Heyman at CBS Sports:  (http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/blog/j
on-heyman/21363934/phillies-talked-
brown-for-soriano-also-eye-ross-fa-
outfielders)

The Phillies, interested in a right-handed batter to hit behind cleanup man Ryan Howard, talked to the Cubs about a swap of Domonic Brown for Alfonso Soriano but may still be slightly more inclined to sign a free agent, such as Cody Ross or someone else.

Phillies people are said to be split over how hard to try for Soriano, who had 32 home runs, 108 RBI and a .262 batting average with vastly improved outfield defense.

They have remained interested in Ross all along. Nick Swisher and Josh Hamilton, even bigger free-agent plays, may be tougher fits for Philadelphia's budget. The Phillies could possibly add two corner outfielders after acquiring speedy Ben Revere from Minnesota for center field.

The Cubs are believed willing to pay all but $10 million of the $36 million remaining on Soriano's deal if they can receive good prospects back. The Cubs are all about gathering assets for the future.

The Phillies like Soriano offensively but appear to have some reservations about his defense, despite great improvement last year. Philly's park would fit Soriano well.

Soriano has 10-and-5 rights and vetoed a trade to the Giants last summer.

I just read this on MLBTRADERUMORS.COM . . I dunno about this, I mean if he could hit like he did last year for the next 2 years then ok but I would think they Cubs would have to eat more then just 10m of his salary.  And while I think that Brown can be had I just dunno.  I mean the team sure isn't getting any younger but then again at the same time who really cares about age if they put up numbers?

oops read that wrong, ALL BUT 10M . . I thought it was playing 10m.  I dunno 5m for someone who could hit .260/.330/.480 with 25hrs and 85RBIs that's a bargin.

Phillies signed outfielder Jermaine Mitchell to a minor league contract which includes an invitation to big league spring training.  Mitchell came from the Oakland A's organization and played for Sacramento last year.  He must be fast because in 2011 he hit 16 triples in AA & AAA combined and then hit 11 triples in AAA in 2012.  Most likely he is destined to be with the Ironpigs in 2013.  Other players with minor league contracts who were invited to spring training are Andres Blanco, SS,  Josh Fields, 1B/3B,  Cesar Jimenez, LHP,  Steve Lerud, C,  Michael Martinez, INF/OF,  Zach Miner, RHP, Pete Orr, IF, Humberto Quintero, C.

Phillies claimed LHP Mauricio Robles off waivers from the Seattle Mariners.  He's a 23 year old Venezuelan and was 2-5 5.78 between AA & AAA in 2012.  He had 69 strikeouts in 71.2 IP but also walked 63.  In his 7 professional seasons he has thrown 546 innings and struck out 573 while giving up just 445 hits but he also walked 324.

i am thinking bourne might not be off the board at this point?
even with revere on board...i mean we just went after ichiro

they put a line-up together with ichiro at 1
rollins at 6
revere at 8

i read somewhere bourne might be looking for a 1 year deal now and wait another year to try to break the bank

heck even 2 yrs for $30M
they have the room FOR SURE now and afford to over pay A LITTLE BIT now

and by totally waiting the market has come back to them
would be nice to have him come home AND BE PISSED at the Braves to boot :)

my bad...it looks like they may not have the room...i thought at quick glance they had saved enough with these moves

if trying to stay under the luxury tax they have approx. 7 mil left according to philly.com

cbs is saying they are picking it up for ross...which has always worked for me - i think he would be a great fit here...might have to back load it a bit as he seems to be pretty popular

i was fully aware what ichiro did...the point was that they even considering him was surprising considering they already got a slap hitting speed guy in the outfied and were looking at yet another
